निबोध विप्र द्वीपाख्यां पुरा या विधिना कृता
O Brahmin, listen to the account of the land called Dvīpa, which was formerly created according to the ordinance.
मेरोरष्टसु शृङ्गेषु ससृजेऽष्टौ पुरी प्रभुः
The Lord created eight cities upon the eight peaks of Meru.
मूलेऽनन्तस्य नगरीं निर्माय जगतां पतिः
At the base of Ananta, the Lord of the worlds constructed a city.
भूर्लोकं च भुवर्लोकं स्वर्लोकं सुमनोहरम् 1.7.
He made Bhūrloka, Bhuvarloka, and the exceedingly delightful Svarloka.
शृङ्गमूर्ध्नि ब्रह्मलोकं जरादिपरिवर्जितम्
On the summit of the peak is Brahmaloka, free from old age and the like.
तदधः सप्त पातालान्निर्ममे जगदीश्वरः
Beneath that, the Lord of the universe fashioned the seven Pātālas.
अतलं वितलं चैव सुतलं च तलातलम्
Atala, Vitala, and likewise Sutala, as well as Talātala.
सप्तद्वीपैः सप्तनाकैः सप्तपातालसंज्ञकैः
With the seven continents, the seven heavens, and those known as the seven Pātālas.
एवञ्चासंख्यब्रह्माण्डं सर्वं कृत्रिममेव च
Thus, the entire countless universe is indeed artificial.
प्रतिविश्वेषु दिक्पाला ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः
In each universe, the guardians of the directions are Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara.
ब्राह्माण्डगणनां कर्तुं न क्षमो जगतां पतिः
The Lord of the worlds is not able to count the multitude of universes.
संख्यातुमीश्वरः शक्तो न संख्यातुं तथापि सः
Though the Lord is capable of reckoning, even so, He cannot enumerate them.
कृत्रिमाणि च विश्वानि विश्वस्थानि च यानि च
And those worlds which are artificial, and those which are established in the universe.
वैकुण्ठः शिवलोकश्च गोलोकश्च तयोः परः 1.7.
Vaikuṇṭha, Śivaloka, and Goloka—Goloka is superior to those two.
सौतिरुवाच चकार वीर्य्याधानं च कामुक्यां कामुको यथा
Sauti said: The passionate one deposited his seed in Kāmuḳī, as is the way of desire.
सा दिव्यं शतवर्षं च धृत्वा गर्भं सुदुस्सहम्
She bore that divine and exceedingly difficult embryo for a hundred years.
विविधाञ्शास्त्रसंघांश्च तर्कव्याकरणादिकान्
And various collections of treatises, including logic, grammar, and others.
षड्रागान्सुन्दरांश्चैव नानाताल समन्वितान्
And the six delightful rāgas, each endowed with various rhythms.
वर्षमासमृतुं चैव तिथिं दण्डक्षणादिकम्
The year, month, season, lunar day, and also the divisions of time such as daṇḍa and kṣaṇa,
पुष्टिं च देवसेनां च मेधां च विजयां जयाम्
Nourishment, the army of the gods, intelligence, victory, and triumph,
देवसेनां महाषष्ठीं कार्त्तिकेयप्रियां सतीम्
The army of the gods, the great Ṣaṣṭhī, the chaste one dear to Kārttikeya,
ब्राह्मं पाद्मं च वाराहं कल्पत्रयमिदं स्मृतम्
The Brahma, Padma, and Varāha—these three are known as the three kalpas.
चतुर्विधं च प्रलयं कालं वै मृत्युकन्यकाम्
The fourfold dissolution, time, and the maiden of death,
अथ धातुः पृष्ठदेशादधर्मः समजायत 1.8.
Then, from the posterior region of Dhātu, adharma (unrighteousness) was born.
नाभिदेशाद्विश्वकर्मा जातो वै शिल्पिनां गुरुः
From the navel region, Viśvakarman was born, the teacher of artisans.
अथ धातुश्च मनस आविर्भूताः कुमारकाः
Then, from the mind of Dhātu, boy-children appeared.
सनकश्च सनन्दश्च तृतीयश्च सनातनः
Sanaka, Sananda, and the third, Sanātana,
आविर्बभूव मुखतः कुमारः कनकप्रभः
A boy of golden radiance appeared from the mouth.
क्षत्त्रियाणां बीजरूपो नाम्ना स्वायम्भुवो मनुः
The seed-form among kṣatriyas, named Svāyambhuva Manu,
सस्त्रीकश्च मनुस्तस्थौ धात्राज्ञा परिपालकः
That Manu, together with his wife, remained as the protector by the command of Dhātṛ.
