तावदस्य जरा मृत्युर्नास्तीति ब्रह्मणो वरः
So long, neither old age nor death will touch him—such is Brahma's boon.
शतलक्षं दानवानामग्रहील्लीलया क्रुधा दिव्यास्त्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन वारयामास दानवः 2.19.
With ease and anger, he seized a hundred thousand demons; with a sharp divine weapon, the demon repelled them.
दिव्यास्त्रैर्दानवेन्द्रोऽयं शतखण्डं चकार सः
The lord of demons, with divine weapons, shattered them into a hundred pieces.
सर्वसिद्धेश्वरः श्रीमान्ववृधे दानवेश्वरः वेगेन मुष्टिना काली कोपयुक्ता भयंकरी
The glorious lord of all powers, the king of demons, grew; Kali, filled with wrath and terrifying, struck with her fist in speed.
बभञ्जाथ रथं तस्य चाहनत्सारथिं सती
Then she broke his chariot and struck the charioteer.
वामहस्तेन जग्राह शंखचूडश्च लीलया
With her left hand, she seized Shankhachuda effortlessly.
बभ्राम व्यथया दैत्यः क्षणं मूर्च्छामवाप ह
The demon staggered from pain and, for a moment, lost consciousness.
न चक्रे बाहुयुद्धं स देव्या सह ननाम ताम्
He did not engage in hand-to-hand combat with the goddess, but bowed to her.
नास्त्रं चिक्षेप तां भक्त्या मातृबुद्ध्या च वैष्णवः
He did not hurl any weapon at her, for, regarding her with devotion and as a mother, he was devoted to Vishnu.
गृहीत्वा दानवं देवी भ्रामयित्वा पुनः पुनः
The goddess seized the demon, whirled him around again and again,
रत्नेन्द्रसारखचितं विमानाग्र्यं मनोहरम् । ।। 2.19.
A splendid aerial chariot, adorned with the finest jewels, enchanting to behold,
क्षतजं दानवानां च मांसं च विपुलं क्षुधा
Out of great hunger, she consumed the blood and abundant flesh of the demons.
उवाच रणवृत्तान्तं पौर्वापर्य्यं यथाक्रमम्
She narrated the events of the battle, in their proper order, from beginning to end.
लक्षं च दानवेन्द्राणामवशिष्टं रणेऽधुना
Now, a hundred thousand of the lords of the demons remain on the battlefield.
संग्रामे दानवेन्द्रं च हन्तुं पाशुपतेन वै
In the battle, the lord of the demons was to be slain by the Pāśupata weapon.
राजेन्द्रश्च महाज्ञानी महाबलपराक्रमः
And the king, who was greatly wise and possessed immense strength and valor,
नारायण उवाच ययौ स्वयं च समरं स्वगणैः सह नारद
Nārāyaṇa said: Nārada himself went to the battle along with his own followers.
शंखचूडः शिवं दृष्ट्वा विमानादवरुह्य च
Śaṅkhacūḍa, seeing Śiva, descended from his aerial chariot.
तं प्रणम्य च वेगेन विमानं ह्यारुरोह सः
Having quickly bowed to him, he then ascended his chariot.
शिवदानवयोर्युद्धं पूर्णमब्दं बभूव ह
The battle between Śiva and the demon lasted a full year.
न्यस्तशस्त्रश्च भगवान्न्यस्तशस्त्रश्च दानवः
Both the blessed Lord and the demon had laid aside their weapons.
दानवानां च शतकमुद्वृत्तं च बभूव ह
There arose a hundred exceedingly proud demons.
ततो विष्णुर्महामायो वृद्धब्राह्मणरूपधृक्
Then Viṣṇu, the master of great illusion, took the form of an aged brāhmaṇa.
वृद्धब्राह्मण उवाच त्वं सर्वसम्पदां दाता यन्मे मनसि वाञ्छितम्
The aged brāhmaṇa said: You are the giver of all prosperity, whatever I desire in my heart.
निराहाराय वृद्धाय तृषितायातुराय च
To one who was fasting, aged, thirsty, and afflicted,
ओमित्युवाच राजेन्द्रः प्रसन्नवदनेक्षणः 2.20.
The king, with a cheerful and gracious face, spoke the syllable 'Om.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा दानवश्रेष्ठो ददौ कवचमुत्तमम्
Hearing this, the foremost of the Daityas gave the excellent armor.
शङ्खचूडस्य रूपेण जगाम तुलसीं प्रति
Assuming the form of Shankhachuda, he went to Tulasi.
अथ शम्भुर्हरेः शूलं दानवार्थं समग्रहीत्
Then Shambhu took up Hari's trident for the sake of the Daitya.
नारायणाधिष्ठिताग्रं ब्रह्माधिष्ठितमध्यमम्
Its tip was empowered by Narayana, its middle by Brahma,
