सुतात्परमतिस्नेहं कुर्वन्तीं रतिकर्तरि
She shows utmost affection for her son, but only when engaged in pleasure.
पश्यन्तीं रिपुतुल्यं च वृद्धं वा मैथुनाक्षमम्
She regards as an enemy the old man who is incapable of intercourse.
चर्चया भक्षयन्तीं तं कीनाश इव गोरजः
She consumes him through her actions, like a worm eats cow dung.
शश्वत्कपटरूपां च सर्वदोषाश्रयां सदा
She is always deceitful in form, and ever the abode of all faults.
तपोमार्गार्गलां शश्वन्मुक्तिद्वारकपाटिकाम्
She is ever a barrier on the path of austerity, always the lock on the door to liberation.
हरेर्भक्तिव्यवहितां सर्वमाया करण्डिकाम्
She obstructs devotion to Hari, and is the basket of all illusion.
इन्द्रजालस्वरूपां च मिथ्यावादिस्वरूपिणीम्
She is of the nature of illusion, and embodies false speech.
नानाविण्मूत्रपूयानामाधारं मलसंयुतम् ।।।2.16.
She is the receptacle of various kinds of excrement, urine, and pus, always mixed with filth.
मायारूपं मायिनां च विधिना निर्मितं पुरा
The form of illusion, and those who are illusionists, were fashioned by the Creator in ancient times.
इत्युक्त्वा तुलसी तं च विरराम च नारद
Having spoken thus, Tulasī and Nārada both became silent.
शंखचूड उवाच किंचित्सत्यमलीकं च किंचिन्मत्तो निशामय
Śaṃkhacūḍa said: Listen to something true, something false, and something from me.
निर्मितं द्विविधं धात्रा स्त्रीरूपं सर्वमोहनम्
The Creator fashioned a twofold form of woman, which captivates all.
लक्ष्मी सरस्वती दुर्गा सावित्री राधिकादिकम्
Lakṣmī, Sarasvatī, Durgā, Sāvitrī, Rādhikā, and others—
एतासामंशरूपं यत्स्त्रीरूपं वास्तवं स्मृतम्
The true form of woman is considered to be a portion of these.
शतरूपा देवहूतिस्स्वधा स्वाहा च दक्षिणा
Śatarūpā, Devahūti, Svadhā, Svāhā, and Dakṣiṇā—
कुबेरवायुपत्नी साऽप्यदितिश्च दितिस्तथा
Kubera's wife, Vāyu's wife, as well as Aditi and Diti—
अहल्याऽरुन्धती मेना तारा मन्दोदरी परा
Ahalyā, Arundhatī, Menā, Tārā, Mandodarī, and Parā—
पुष्टिस्तुष्टिः स्मृतिर्मेधा कालिका च वसुन्धरा 2.16.
Puṣṭi, Tuṣṭi, Smṛti, Medhā, Kālikā, and Vasundharā—
स्वस्तिः श्रद्धा च कान्तिश्च तुष्टिः शान्तिस्तथा परा
Svasti, Śraddhā, Kānti, Tuṣṭi, Śānti, and Parā—
सम्पत्तिवृत्तिकीर्त्यश्च क्रियाशोभाप्रभांशकम्
Prosperity, conduct, fame, action, beauty, and brilliance—
कृत्यास्वरूपं तद्यत्तु स्वर्वेश्यादिकमेव च
That which is the essence of action, and whatever is chief among goddesses—
सत्त्वप्रधानं यद्रूपं तच्च शुद्धं स्वभावतः
The form which is dominated by purity is naturally pure.
तद्वास्तवं च विज्ञेयं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः
Know that as the true form; the wise declare it so.
स्थानाभावात्क्षणाभावान्मध्यवृत्तेरभावतः
Due to absence of place, absence of moment, and absence of intermediate state—
बहुगोष्ठा वृतेनैव रिपुराजभयेन च
Because of many discussions, and due to fear of enemy kings—
इदं मध्यमरूपं च प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः
The wise declare this as the intermediate form.
न पृच्छति कुले जातः पण्डितश्च परस्त्रियम्
A wise man born in a good family does not question another's wife.
आगच्छामि त्वत्समीपमाज्ञया ब्रह्मणोऽधुना 2.16.
Now, by the command of Brahmā, I have come into your presence.
अहमेव शङ्खचूडो देवविद्रावकारकः
I myself am Shankhachuda, the one who drives away the gods.
अहमष्टसु गोपेषु गोगोपीपार्षदेषु च
Among the eight groups of cowherds, and among the attendants of cows and cowherd women, I am present.
