ब्रह्मोवाच तस्याश्च प्राणतुल्या त्वं मद्वरेण भविष्यसि
Brahma spoke: By my boon, you will become as dear to her as life itself.
शृंगारं युवयोर्गोप्यमाज्ञास्यति च राधिका
Radhika will command that your love remain secret between you both.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा दत्त्वा च देव्यै तत्षोडशाक्षरम्
Having spoken thus, he gave to the goddess the sixteen-syllable mantra.
सर्वं पूजाविधानं च पुरश्चर्याविधिक्रमम्
He also imparted the entire method of worship and the prescribed rites of preparation.
सा च ब्रह्मोपदेशेन पुण्ये बदरिकाश्रमे
By Brahma's instruction, she performed them in the sacred Badarikā hermitage.
दिव्यं द्वादशवर्षं च पूजां चैव चकार सा
For twelve divine years, she carried out the worship.
सिद्धे तपसि मन्त्रे च वरं प्राप्य यथेप्सितम्
When the austerity and mantra were perfected, she obtained the desired boon.
प्रसन्नमानसा देवी तत्याज तपसः क्लमम् 2.15.
The goddess, her mind content, abandoned the fatigue of austerity.
भुक्त्वा पीत्वा च सन्तुष्टा शयनं च चकार सा
Having eaten and drunk, satisfied, she lay down to rest.
नारायण उवाच नवयौवनसम्पन्ना प्रशंसन्ती वरांगना
Nārāyaṇa spoke: Endowed with fresh youth, the excellent woman praised.
चिक्षेप पञ्चबाणश्च पञ्च बाणांश्च तां प्रति
The five-arrowed one shot five arrows at her.
पुलकाञ्चितसर्वांगी कम्पिता रक्तलोचना
Her whole body was covered in goosebumps, she trembled, her eyes became red.
क्षणमुद्विग्नतां प्राप क्षणं तन्द्रां सुखावहाम्
For a moment she felt anxious, for a moment she experienced pleasant drowsiness.
क्षणं सा चेतनां प्राप क्षणं प्राप विषण्णताम्
For a moment she regained consciousness, for a moment she became despondent.
भ्रमन्ती क्षणमुद्वेगाद्विवसन्ती क्षणं पुनः
She wandered for a moment in distress, then departed for a moment, and returned again.
पुष्पचन्दनतल्पं च तद्बभूवातिकण्टकम्
The bed of flowers and sandalwood became full of thorns.
निलयश्च निराकारः सूक्ष्मवस्त्रं हुताशनः
The dwelling was formless, the fine garment was fire.
क्षणं ददर्श तन्द्रायां सुवेषं पुरुषं सती
In a moment of drowsiness, Sati saw a well-adorned man.
चन्दनोक्षितसर्वांगं रत्नभूषणभूषितम् 2.16.
His entire body was smeared with sandalwood and adorned with jeweled ornaments.
कथयन्तं रतिकथां चुम्बन्तमधरं मुहुः
He spoke of love's pleasures and repeatedly kissed her lips.
पुनरेव तु गच्छन्तमागच्छन्तं वसन्तकम्
Again, she saw Vasantaka coming and going.
पुनः स्वचेतनां प्राप्य विललाप पुनः पुनः
Regaining her own consciousness, she lamented again and again.
शङ्खचूडो महायोगी जैगीषव्यान्मनोरमम्
Shankhachuda, the great yogi, delightful to the Jaigishavyas,
पठन्सदा तु कवचं सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गलम्
Always recited the protective hymn, the auspicious among all auspicious things.
आज्ञया ब्रह्मणः सोऽपि बदरीं वै समाययौ
By Brahma's command, he too arrived at Badari.
नवयौवनसम्पन्नं कामदेवसमप्रभम्
He was endowed with youthful vigor, radiant like Kamadeva.
श्वेतचम्पकवर्णाभं रत्नभूषणभूषितम्
He shone with the hue of white champaka flowers and was adorned with jeweled ornaments.
महारत्नगणाक्लृप्तविमानस्थं मनोहरम्
He was charming, seated in a celestial chariot fashioned from great gems.
पारिजातप्रसूनाढ्यमाल्यवन्तं च सुस्मितम् 2.16.
He wore garlands rich with parijata blossoms and smiled beautifully.
सा दृष्ट्वा सन्निधाने तं मुखमाच्छाद्य वाससा
Seeing him nearby, she covered her face with her garment.
