पितुर्वचःपालनार्थं सत्यसन्धो रघूत्तमः
For the sake of obeying his father's command, the best of the Raghu dynasty was truthful.
तस्थौ समुद्रनिकटे सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च
He stayed near the ocean with Sita and Lakshmana.
तं रामं दुःखितं दृष्ट्वा स च दुःखी बभूव ह
Seeing Rama distressed, he too became sorrowful.
वह्निरुवाच सीताहरणकालोऽयं तवैव समुपस्थितः ।। 2.14.
Agni spoke: 'The time for Sita's abduction has now arrived for you.'
दैवं च दुर्निवार्य्यं वै न च दैवात्परं बलम्
Fate is indeed difficult to resist, and there is no power greater than destiny.
दास्यामि सीतां तुभ्यं च परीक्षासमये पुनः
I will give Sita to you again at the time of the trial.
रामस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा न प्रकाश्य च लक्ष्मणम्
Hearing those words, Rama did not reveal them to Lakshmana.
वह्निर्योगेन सीतावन्मायासीतां चकार ह
By the power of fire, Sita was made into a Maya-Sita.
सीतां गृहीत्वा स ययौ गोप्यं वक्तुं निषेध्य च
He went away, taking Sita, and forbade her to speak openly.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रामो ददर्श कनकं मृगम्
Meanwhile, Rama saw a golden deer.
संन्यस्य लक्ष्मणं रामो जानक्या रक्षणे वने
Rama, leaving Lakshmana in the forest to protect Janaki,
लक्ष्मणेति च शब्दं वै कृत्वा मायामृगस्तदा
The illusory deer then made the sound 'Lakshmana!'
वैकुण्ठस्य महाद्वारं किङ्करो द्वारपालयोः 2.14.
At the great gate of Vaikuntha, a servant among the gatekeepers,
शापेन सनकादीनां सम्प्राप्तो राक्षसीं तनुम्
By the curse of Sanaka and others, he attained the form of a rakshasi.
अथ शब्दं च सा श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणेति च विक्लवम्
Then she heard the distressed cry, 'Lakshmana!'
गते च लक्ष्मणे रामं रावणो दुर्निवारणः
With Lakshmana gone, Ravana, impossible to restrain, approached Rama.
विषसाद च रामश्च वने दृष्ट्वा च लक्ष्मणम्
Rama became despondent in the forest upon seeing Lakshmana.
मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप्य सुचिरं विललाप भृशं पुनः
Having fallen unconscious for a long time, he lamented intensely again.
काले संप्राप्य तद्वार्तां गृधद्वारा नदीतटे
In time, he received that news through the vulture by the riverbank.
लङ्कां गत्वा रघुश्रेष्ठश्चावधीत्सायकेन च
Having gone to Lanka, the foremost of the Raghu dynasty slew him with an arrow.
तां च वह्निपरीक्षां व कारयामास सत्वरम्
He quickly had the fire ordeal performed.
छाया चोवाच वह्निं च रामं च विनयान्विता
The shadow, with humility, spoke to the fire and to Rama.
वह्निरुवाच कृत्वा तपस्यां तत्रैव स्वर्गलक्ष्मीर्भविष्यसि ।। 2.14.
Agni said: By performing austerity right there, you shall attain the fortune of heaven.
सा च तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रतेपे पुष्करे तपः
Hearing those words, she undertook austerity at Pushkara.
सा च कालेन तपसा यज्ञकुण्डसमुद्भवा
In time, through her austerity, she arose from the sacrificial fire-pit.
कृते युगे वेदवती कुशध्वजसुता शुभा
In the Krita Yuga, she was Vedavati, the auspicious daughter of Kushadhvaja.
तच्छाया द्रौपदी देवी द्वापरे द्रुपदात्मजा
Her shadow was the goddess Draupadi, the daughter of Drupada in the Dvapara Yuga.
नारद उवाच इति वै चित्तसन्देहं दूरीकुरु महाप्रभो
Narada said: Thus, O great lord, remove all doubt from your mind.
नारायण उवाच रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना छाया सा बहुविह्वला
Narayana said: That shadow, endowed with beauty and youth, was greatly distressed.
रामाग्न्योराज्ञया तप्त्वा ययाचे शङ्करं वरम्
By the command of Rama and Agni, she performed austerity and sought a boon from Shankara.
