यूयं गच्छत भद्रं वो भविष्यति भयं कुतः
You may go; may good fortune be yours—why should there be any fear?
आशुतोषः स भगवाञ्छरण्यश्च सतां गतिः
That blessed Lord is easily pleased, a refuge and the ultimate goal of the virtuous.
सुदर्शनं शिवश्चैव मम प्राणाधिकप्रियौ
Sudarśana and Śiva are both dearer to me than life itself.
शक्तः स्रष्टुं महादेवः सूर्य्यकोटिं च लीलया
Mahādeva is capable of creating ten million Suns with ease.
बाह्यज्ञानं तन्न किंचिद्ध्यायतो मां दिवानिशम्
That external knowledge is nothing for one who meditates on me day and night.
अहमेव चिन्तयामि तत्कल्याणं दिवानिशम्
I myself think of their welfare day and night.
शिवस्वरूपो भगवाञ्छिवाधिष्ठातृदेवता 2.13.
The Blessed Lord is of the nature of Śiva, and Śiva is the presiding deity.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र चागमच्छङ्करः स्वयम्
Meanwhile, at that very moment, Śaṅkara himself arrived there.
अवरुह्य वृषात्तूर्णं भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरः
Swiftly dismounting from his bull, he bowed his head in devotion.
रत्नसिंहासनस्थं च रत्नालङ्कारभूषितम्
He saw him seated on a jeweled throne, adorned with jeweled ornaments.
नवीननीरदश्यामं सुन्दरं च चतुर्भुजम्
Dark as a fresh raincloud, beautiful, and four-armed,
चन्दनोक्षितसर्वांगं भूषितं पीतवाससा
His entire body anointed with sandalwood, adorned with yellow garments,
विद्याधरीनृत्यगीतं शृण्वन्तं सस्मितं मुदा
Listening with a smile and delight to the singing and dancing of the Vidyādharas,
तं ननाम महादेवो ब्रह्माणं च ननाम सः
To him Mahādeva bowed, and Brahmā also bowed to him.
कश्यपश्च महाभक्त्या तुष्टाव च ननाम च
Kaśyapa, with great devotion, praised and bowed as well.
सुखासने सुखासीनं विश्रान्तं चन्द्रशेखरम्
He saw Candraśekhara seated comfortably on a pleasant seat, at rest.
अक्रोधं सत्त्वसंसर्गात्प्रसन्नं सस्मितं मुदा 2.13.
Free from anger through the influence of sattva, serene, smiling, and joyful.
तमुवाच प्रसन्नात्मा प्रसन्नं सुरसंसदि
With a tranquil heart, he spoke to him, who was pleased, in the assembly of the gods.
श्रीभगवानुवाच लौकिकं वैदिकं चैव त्वां पृच्छामि तथा ऽपि शम्
Śrī Bhagavān said: I ask you about worldly and Vedic matters, and also about peace.
तपसां फलदातारं दातारं सर्वसम्पदाम्
You are the giver of the fruits of austerities, the bestower of all wealth.
ज्ञानाधिदेवे सर्वज्ञे ज्ञानं पृच्छामि किं वृथा
You are the lord of knowledge, all-knowing; why should I ask you about knowledge in vain?
त्वामेव वाग्धनं प्रश्नमलं स्वाश्रयमागमे
You alone are the source of speech and questions, the very foundation of the scriptures.
श्रीमहादेव उवाच सूर्य्यः शशाप इति मे हेतुरागमकोपयोः
Śrī Mahādeva said: The Sun was cursed—that is the reason for the conflict between the scriptures.
पुत्रवात्सल्यशोकेन सूर्य्यं हन्तुं समुद्यतः
Out of grief for his son and parental affection, he rose up to destroy the Sun.
त्वां ये शरणमापन्ना ध्यानेन वचसाऽपि वा
Those who take refuge in you, whether by meditation or even by words,
साक्षाद्ये शरणापन्नास्तत्फलं किं वदामि भोः
And those who directly take refuge—what need is there to speak of their reward, O sir?
किं मे भक्तस्य भविता तन्मे ब्रूहि जगत्प्रभो 2.13.
What will become of my devotee? Tell me that, Lord of the universe.
श्रीभगवानुवाच वैकुण्ठे घटिकार्द्धेन शीघ्रं याहि नृपालयम्
Śrī Bhagavān said: Go quickly to the realm of kings from Vaikuṇṭha in half a ghaṭikā.
वृषध्वजो मृतः कालाद्दुर्निवार्य्यात्सुदारुणात्
The bearer of the bull-banner died, struck down by time, which is irresistible and exceedingly fierce.
तत्पुत्रौ च महाभागौ धर्मध्वजकुशध्वजौ
His two sons, Dharmadhvaja and Kuśadhvaja, were both greatly illustrious.
