तेन त्वां सा वृणोत्येव यतस्त्वद्देहसम्भवा
Therefore, she chooses you, for she is born from your body.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा धाता च तां समर्प्य जगाम सः
Thus having spoken, the creator offered her and departed.
शय्यां रतिकरीं कृत्वा पुष्पचन्दनचर्चिताम्
He made a bed for pleasure, adorned with flowers and sandalwood.
गां पृथ्वीं च गता यस्मात्स्वस्थानं पुनरागता 2.12.
Having gone to the earth and the ground, he returned again to his own place.
मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप सा देवी नवसङ्गममात्रतः
At the very moment of the new union, that goddess fell into a swoon.
तद्दृष्ट्वा दुःखिता वाणी सापत्न्येर्ष्याविवर्जिता
Seeing that, Vani was distressed, free from the jealousy of a co-wife.
गङ्गया सहितस्यैव तिस्रो भार्या रमापतेः
With Ganga, there were three wives of the Lord of Lakshmi.
नारद उवाच तुलसी कुत्र सम्भूता का वा सा पूर्वजन्मनि
Narada said: Where was Tulasi born, and who was she in her previous birth?
कस्य वा सा कुले जाता कस्य कन्या तपस्विनी
In which family was that ascetic maiden born, and whose daughter was she?
निर्विकल्पं निरीहं च सर्वसाक्षिस्वरूपकम्
Of unchanging nature, without desire, the very form of the witness of all.
सर्वाराध्यं च सर्वेशं सर्वज्ञं सर्वकारणम्
Worthy of worship by all, Lord of all, all-knowing, the cause of everything.
कथमेतादृशी देवी वृक्षत्वं समवाप ह
How did such a goddess come to assume the form of a tree?
सन्दिग्धं मे मनो लोलं प्रेरयेन्मां मुहुर्मुहुः ।। छेत्तुमर्हसि सन्देहं सर्वसन्देहभञ्जना
My mind is restless and filled with doubt, urging me again and again; you should dispel this doubt, O destroyer of all doubts.
नारायण उवाच यशस्वी कीर्तिमांश्चैव विष्णोरंशसमुद्भवः
Narayana said: Renowned and celebrated, he was born from a portion of Vishnu.
तत्पुत्रो धर्मसावर्णिर्धर्मिष्ठो वैष्णवः शुचिः
His son was Dharmasavarni, righteous, devoted to Vishnu, and pure.
तत्पुत्रो देवसावर्णिर्विष्णुव्रतपरायणः
His son was Devasavarni, devoted to the vows of Vishnu.
वृषध्वजश्च तत्पुत्रो वृषध्वजपरायणः 2.13.
His son was Vrishadhvaja, devoted to Vrishadhvaja.
पुत्रादपि परः स्नेहो नृपे तस्मिञ्छिवस्य च
The king and Shiva both had affection for him greater than for a son.
पूजां च सर्वदेवानां दूरीभूतां चकार सः
He set aside the worship of all other gods.
माघे सरस्वतीपूजां दूरीभूतां चकार सः
In the month of Magha, he set aside the worship of Sarasvati.
न कोऽपि देवो भूपेन्द्रं शशाप शिवकारणात्
No god cursed the king because of Shiva.
शूलं गृहीत्वा तं सूर्य्यं धृतवाच्छङ्करः स्वयम्
Taking up his trident, Shankara himself restrained the Sun.
शिवस्त्रिशूलहस्तश्च ब्रह्मलोकं ययौ क्रुधा
Śiva, holding his trident, went to Brahmā's world in anger.
शूलं गृहीत्वा तत्रापि धृतवाञ्छङ्करो रविम्
There too, Śaṅkara, having taken up his trident, confronted the Sun.
नारायणं च सर्वेशं ते ययुः शरणं भिया
Out of fear, they all sought refuge in Nārāyaṇa, the Lord of all.
सर्वे निवेदनं चक्रुर्भियस्ते कारणं हरौ
All of them made their appeal to Hari, explaining the cause of their fear.
नारायणश्च कृपयाऽभयं तेभ्यो ददौ मुने 2.13.
And Nārāyaṇa, out of compassion, granted them freedom from fear, O sage.
स्मरन्ति ये यत्र तत्र मां विपत्तौ भयान्विताः
Wherever those afflicted by danger remember me,
पाताऽहं जगतां देवः कर्त्ताऽहं सततं सदा
I am the protector of the worlds, I am always and forever their creator.
शिवोऽहं त्वमहं चापि सूर्य्योऽहं त्रिगुणात्मकः
I am Śiva, I am you, I am also the Sun, the one whose nature is the three guṇas.
