भूमिं च सर्वसस्याढ्या ब्राह्मणाय ददाति यः
Whoever gives land, enriched with all crops, to a brāhmaṇa,
ग्रामं भूमिं च धान्यं च यो ददात्याददाति यः
Whoever gives or takes a village, land, or grain,
भूमिदानं च तत्काले यः साधुश्चानुमोदते
And whoever, at that time, approves the gift of land,
स्वदत्तां परदत्तां वा ब्रह्मवृत्तिं हरेत्तु यः
Whoever takes away the livelihood of a brāhmaṇa, whether given by himself or by another,
तत्पुत्रपौत्रप्रभृतिर्भूमिहीनः श्रिया हतः
He who, along with his sons, grandsons, and others, is deprived of land, is ruined in prosperity.
गवां मार्गं विनिष्कृष्य यश्च सस्यं ददाति सः 2.9.
Whoever removes the path of cows and gives crops there—
गोष्ठं तडागं निष्कृष्य मार्गं सस्यं ददाति यः
Whoever, having cleared a cow-pen or a pond, gives the path or the crops—
न पञ्चपिण्डमुद्धृत्य स्नाति कूपे परस्य यः
Whoever bathes in another's well without first offering the five oblations—
कामी भूमौ च रहसि बीजत्यागं करोति यः
Whoever, driven by desire, secretly discards seed upon the earth—
अम्बुवीच्यम्बुखननं यः करोति च मानवः
Whoever, being a man, makes water-waves or digs for water—
परकीये लुप्तकूपे कूपं मूढः करोति यः
Whoever, being foolish, makes a well in another's abandoned well—
परकीयतडागे च पङ्कमुद्धृत्य चोत्सृजेत्
And whoever, in another's pond, removes mud and throws it out—
पिण्डं पित्रे भूतिभर्त्तुर्न प्रदाय च मानवः
Whoever does not offer the rice-ball to his father or to the guardian of the departed—
भूमौ दीपं योऽर्पयति सोऽन्धः सप्तसु जन्मसु
Whoever places a lamp upon the ground becomes blind for seven births.
मुक्तामाणिक्यहीरं च सुवर्णं च मणिं तथा 2.9.
Pearls, rubies, diamonds, gold, and also gems—
शिवलिङ्गं शिलामर्च्यां यश्चार्पयति भूतले
Whoever places a Śiva-liṅga or a worshipped stone image upon the earth—
सूक्तं मन्त्रं शिलातोयं पुष्पं च तुलसीदलम्
A hymn, a mantra, water from a stone, a flower, or a tulasī leaf—
जपमालां पुष्पमालां कर्पूरं रोचनां तथा
A rosary, a garland of flowers, camphor, and also yellow pigment—
मुने चन्दनकाष्ठं च रुद्राक्षं कुशमूलकम्
O sage, sandalwood, rudrākṣa beads, or kuśa grass roots—
पुस्तकं यज्ञसूत्रं च भूमौ संस्थापयेत्तु यः
Whoever places a book or a sacrificial thread upon the ground—
ब्रह्महत्यासमं पापमिह वै लभते ध्रुवम्
He certainly incurs a sin equal to the killing of a brāhmaṇa.
यज्ञं कृत्वा तु यो भूमिं क्षीरेण नहि सिञ्चति
Whoever, having performed a sacrifice, does not sprinkle the ground with milk—
भूकम्पे ग्रहणे यो हि करोति खननं भुवः
Whoever digs the earth during an earthquake or an eclipse—
हरेरूरौ च या जाता सा चोर्वी परिकीर्त्तिता 2.9.
That which was born from the thighs of Hari is called Urvī.
इज्या च यागभरणात्क्षोणी क्षीणा लये च या
That which is diminished due to sacrificial offerings and rituals, and that which is absorbed at dissolution—
काश्यपी कश्यपस्येयमचला स्थितिरूपतः
This is the daughter of Kaśyapa, the immovable one, in the form of stability.
पृथ्वी पृधुककन्यात्वाद्विस्तृतत्वान्मही मुने
She is called Pṛthvī because she is the daughter of Pṛthu, and Mahī, O sage, because of her vastness.
नारद उवाच गङ्गोपाख्यानमधुना वद वेदविदां वर
Nārada said: Now tell the story of Gaṅgā, O best of those who know the Vedas.
भारतं भारतीशा पादाजगाम सुरेश्वरी
The goddess of the gods, Gaṅgā, came to Bhārata from the feet of the lord of Bhārata.
कथं कुत्र युगे केन प्रार्थिता प्रेरिता पुरा
How, where, in which age, by whom was she requested and sent before?
