प्रतिविश्वेषु वसुधा शैलकाननसंयुता
In each universe, the earth is accompanied by mountains and forests.
हिमाद्रिमेरुसंयुक्ता ग्रहचन्द्रार्कसंयुता
It is joined with the Himalayas and Meru, and with the planets, the moon, and the sun.
पुण्यतीर्थसमायुक्ता पुण्यभारतसंयुता
It is endowed with holy pilgrimage sites and with the sacred land of Bharata.
पातालाः सप्त तदधस्तदूर्ध्वे ब्रह्मलोककः
Below it are the seven netherworlds, and above them is the world of Brahma.
एवं सर्वाणि विश्वानि पृथिव्यां निर्मितानि वै 2.8.
Thus, all the worlds are indeed created upon the earth.
नश्वराणि च विश्वानि कृत्रिमाकृत्रिमाणि च
All these worlds are perishable, both artificial and natural.
महाविराडादिसृष्टौ सृष्टः कृष्णेन चात्मना
In the creation beginning with the great cosmic being, all was created by Krishna himself.
क्षित्यधिष्ठातृदेवी सा वाराहे पूजिता सुरैः
That goddess who presides over the earth was worshipped by the gods in the form of Varahi.
विष्णोर्वराहरूपस्य पत्नी सा श्रुतिसम्मता
She is acknowledged by the scriptures as the wife of Vishnu in his boar form.
नारद उवाच वराहेण च वाराही सर्वैः सर्वाश्रया सती
Narada said: By the Boar, Varahi, who is the support of all, was united with him.
तस्याः पूजाविधानं चाप्यधश्चोद्धरणक्रमम्
The method of her worship and the order of her raising up are also described.
नारायण उवाच उद्दधार महीं हत्वा हिरण्याक्षं रसातलात्
Narayaṇa said: Having slain Hiraṇyākṣa, he lifted the earth from the lower regions.
जले तां स्थापयामास पद्मपत्रं यथाऽर्णवे
He placed her upon the waters, like a lotus leaf upon the ocean.
दृष्ट्वा तदधि देवीं च सकामां कामुको हरिः
Seeing that goddess there, filled with desire, Hari, the passionate one,
कृत्वा रतिकरीं शय्यां मूर्त्तिं च सुमनोहराम् 2.8.
Made a delightful bed for pleasure and a most enchanting form.
सुखसम्भोगसंस्पर्शान्मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप सुन्दरी
From the touch of joyful union, the beautiful one fell into a swoon.
विष्णुस्तदंगसंश्लेषाद् बुबुधे न दिवानिशम्
From the embrace of Vishnu's body, she was unaware of day or night.
दधार पूर्वरूपं हि वाराहं चैव लीलया
He assumed his former form, and also the form of the Boar, by his own play.
धूपैर्दीपैश्च नैवद्यैः सिन्दूरैरनुलेपनः
With incense, lamps, offerings of food, and anointments with vermilion.
महावराह उवाच मुनिभिर्मनुभिर्देवैः सिद्धैर्वा मानवादिभिः
Mahāvarāha said: By sages, Manus, gods, Siddhas, or by humans and others.
जलोच्छ्वासाज्जलत्यागगृहारम्भप्रवेशने
At the rising of water, the offering of water, the beginning of house construction, and at entry into a house.
तव पूजां करिष्यन्ति संभ्रमेण सुरादयः
The gods and others will worship you with great reverence.
वसुधोवाच लीलामात्रेण भगवन्विश्वं च सचराचरम्
Vasudhā said: O Lord, by your mere play, the entire universe, both moving and unmoving, exists.
यज्ञसूत्रं च पुष्पं च पुस्तकं तुलसीदलम् 2.8.
The sacred thread of sacrifice, flowers, a book, and a leaf of tulasī.
गोरोचनां चन्दनं च शालग्रामजलं तथा
Gorocanā, sandalwood, and also water from the Śālagrāma stone.
श्रीभगवानुवाच यास्यन्ति ते कालसूत्रं दिव्यं वर्षशतं त्वयि
The Blessed Lord said: For you, a divine span of a hundred years will pass as a single thread of time.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा भगवान्विरराम च नारद
Having thus spoken, the Blessed Lord became silent, O Nārada.
पूजां चक्रुः पृथिव्याश्च ते सर्वे चाज्ञया हरेः
All of them performed worship of the earth by the command of Hari.
दद्युर्मूलेन मन्त्रेण नैवेद्यादिकमेव च
They gave, with the root mantra, offerings of food and the like.
नारद उवाच गूढं सर्वपुराणेषु श्रोतुं कौतूहलं मम
Nārada said: In all the Purāṇas this is hidden; I am eager to hear it.
