शतमन्वन्तरं विष्णुस्तप्त्वा पाता बभूव ह
Vishnu, having performed austerity for a hundred manvantaras, became the protector.
मन्वन्तरं तपस्तेपे शेषो भक्त्या च नारद
Shesha performed austerity for a manvantara with devotion, O Narada.
दिव्यं शतयुगं चैव वायुस्तप्त्वा च भक्तितः
Having performed austerities with devotion for a divine hundred ages, Vayu was purified.
एवं कृष्णस्य तपसा सर्वे देवाश्च पूजिताः
In this way, by Krishna's austerity, all the gods were worshipped.
एवं ते कथितं सर्वं पुराणं च तथाऽऽगमम्
Thus, everything has been told to you, including the Purana and the Agama.
नारद उवाच तस्य पाते प्राकृतिकः प्रलयः परिकीर्त्तितः
Narada said: At the time of its fall, the natural dissolution has been described.
प्रलये प्राकृते चोक्तं तत्रादृष्टा वसुन्धरा
It is said that during the natural dissolution, the earth was not seen there.
वसुन्धरा तिरोभूता कुत्र वा तत्र तिष्ठति
The earth disappeared—where did she remain at that time?
कथं बभूव सा धन्या मान्या सर्वाश्रया जया
How did she become blessed, honored, the support of all, and victorious?
श्रीनारायण उवाच आविर्भावस्तिरोभावः सर्वेषु प्रलयेषु च
Shri Narayana said: Manifestation and disappearance occur in all dissolutions.
श्रूयतां वसुधाजन्म सर्वमंगलमंगलम्
Listen to the origin of the earth, auspicious and inauspicious in every way.
अहो केचिद्वदन्तीति मधुकैटभमेदसा
Ah, some say it is from the marrow of Madhu and Kaitabha.
ऊचतुस्तौ पुरा विष्णुं तुष्टौ युद्धेन तेजसा
Those two, long ago, addressed Vishnu, pleased by their valor in battle.
तयोर्जीवनकालेन प्रत्यक्षा च भवेत्स्फुटम्
During their lifetime, it is said, she became clearly manifest.
मेदिनीति च विख्यातेत्युक्ता यैस्तन्मतं शृणु 2.8.
She is known as Medini; listen to the opinion stated by them.
कथयामि च तज्जन्म सार्थकं सर्वसम्मतम्
I will tell you that origin, meaningful and accepted by all.
महाविराट्शरीरस्य जलस्थस्य चिरं स्फुटम्
From the great cosmic body, which lay in the waters for a long time, clearly—
स च प्रविष्टः सर्वेषां तल्लोम्नां विवरेषु च
He entered into all the pores of its hairs.
प्रत्येकं प्रतिलोम्नां च स्थिता कूपेषु सा स्थिरा
In each and every pore, she remained firmly in the cavities.
आविर्भूता सृष्टिकाले तज्जलात्पर्य्युपस्थिता
At the time of creation, she manifested, emerging from that water.
प्रतिविश्वेषु वसुधा शैलकाननसंयुता
In each universe, the earth is accompanied by mountains and forests.
हिमाद्रिमेरुसंयुक्ता ग्रहचन्द्रार्कसंयुता
It is joined with the Himalayas and Meru, and with the planets, the moon, and the sun.
पुण्यतीर्थसमायुक्ता पुण्यभारतसंयुता
It is endowed with holy pilgrimage sites and with the sacred land of Bharata.
पातालाः सप्त तदधस्तदूर्ध्वे ब्रह्मलोककः
Below it are the seven netherworlds, and above them is the world of Brahma.
एवं सर्वाणि विश्वानि पृथिव्यां निर्मितानि वै 2.8.
Thus, all the worlds are indeed created upon the earth.
नश्वराणि च विश्वानि कृत्रिमाकृत्रिमाणि च
All these worlds are perishable, both artificial and natural.
महाविराडादिसृष्टौ सृष्टः कृष्णेन चात्मना
In the creation beginning with the great cosmic being, all was created by Krishna himself.
क्षित्यधिष्ठातृदेवी सा वाराहे पूजिता सुरैः
That goddess who presides over the earth was worshipped by the gods in the form of Varahi.
विष्णोर्वराहरूपस्य पत्नी सा श्रुतिसम्मता
She is acknowledged by the scriptures as the wife of Vishnu in his boar form.
नारद उवाच वराहेण च वाराही सर्वैः सर्वाश्रया सती
Narada said: By the Boar, Varahi, who is the support of all, was united with him.
