महावाग्मी कवीन्द्रश्च त्रैलोक्यविजयी भवेत् 2.4.
One becomes a great orator, a foremost poet, and victorious in the three worlds.
इदं ते काण्वशाखोक्तं कथितं कवचं मुने
This armor, spoken in the Kanva recension, has been told to you, O sage.
नारायण उवाच महामुनिर्याज्ञवल्क्यो येन तुष्टाव तां पुरा
Nārāyaṇa said: Long ago, the great sage Yājñavalkya worshipped her with praise.
गुरुशापाच्च स मुनिर्हतविद्यो बभूव ह
Because of his teacher's curse, that sage became deprived of knowledge.
संप्राप्य तपसा सूर्य्यं कोणार्के दृष्टिगोचरे
By austerity he approached the Sun at Koṇārka, within his sight.
सूर्य्यस्तं पाठयामास वेदवेदाङ्गमीश्वरः
The Sun, Lord of the Vedas and their branches, caused him to learn them.
तमित्युक्त्वा दीननाथो ह्यन्तर्द्धानं जगाम सः
Having thus spoken to him, the Lord of the afflicted vanished from sight.
याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच गुरुशापात्स्मृतिभ्रष्टं विद्याहीनं च दुःखितम्
Yājñavalkya said: Cursed by my teacher, I am bereft of memory, without knowledge, and distressed.
ज्ञानं देहि स्मृतिं देहि विद्यां विद्याधिदेवते
Grant me knowledge, grant me memory, O goddess of knowledge.
ग्रन्थनिर्मितिशक्तिं च सच्छिष्यं सुप्रतिष्ठितम्
And grant me the power to compose texts, and a worthy, well-established disciple.
लुप्तां सर्वां दैववशान्नवां कुरु पुनः पुनः
Restore again and again all that has been lost by fate.
ब्रह्मस्वरूपा परमा ज्योतीरूपा सनातनी 2.5.
You are the embodiment of Brahman, supreme, the eternal form of light.
यया विना जगत्सर्वं शश्वज्जीवन्मृतं सदा
Without you, the entire world is always living as if dead.
यया विना जगत्सर्वं मूकमुन्मत्तवत्सदा
Without you, the entire world is always mute and mad, as if senseless.
हिमचन्दनकुन्देन्दुकुमुदाम्भोज सन्निभा
You resemble snow, sandalwood, jasmine, the moon, the white lotus, and the water-lily.
विसर्गबिन्दुमात्राणां यदधिष्ठानमेव च
You are indeed the presiding power over the syllables 'visarga' and 'bindu.'
यया विनाऽत्र संख्याकृत्संख्यां कर्त्तुं न शक्नुते
Without you, even one who knows numbers cannot count them here.
व्याख्यास्वरूपा या देवी व्याख्याधिष्ठातृदेवता
The goddess who is the very form of explanation, the presiding deity of exposition.
स्मृतिशक्ति ज्ञानशक्ति बुद्धिशक्तिस्वरूपिणी
She is the embodiment of the power of memory, knowledge, and intellect.
सनत्कुमारो ब्रह्माणं ज्ञानं पप्रच्छ यत्र वै
Where Sanatkumāra once asked Brahmā about knowledge.
तदाऽऽजगाम भगवानात्मा श्रीकृष्ण ईश्वरः
Then the blessed Lord, the Self, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Lord, arrived.
स च तुष्टाव तां ब्रह्मा चाज्ञया परमात्मनः 2.5.
And Brahmā praised her as commanded by the Supreme Self.
यदाऽप्यनन्तं पप्रच्छ ज्ञानमेकं वसुन्धरा
When the earth asked the infinite one for a single knowledge,
तदा त्वां च स तुष्टाव संत्रस्तः कश्यपाज्ञया
Then, by Kaśyapa's command, he too praised you, being afraid.
व्यासः पुराणसूत्रं च समपृच्छत वाल्मिकिम्
Vyāsa questioned Vālmīki regarding the Purāṇa-sūtra.
तदा चकार सिद्धान्तं त्वद्वरेण मुनीश्वरः
Then, by your boon, the lord of sages composed the treatise.
पुराणसूत्रं श्रुत्वा स व्यासः कृष्णकलोद्भवः तदा त्वत्तो वरं प्राप्य स कवीन्द्रो बभूव ह
Having heard the Purāṇa-sūtra, Vyāsa, born in the age of Kṛṣṇa, then, having obtained a boon from you, became the foremost of poets.
तदा वै वेदभागं च पुराणानि चकार ह
Then he composed the divisions of the Veda and the Purāṇas.
क्षणं त्वामेव संचिन्त्य तस्यै ज्ञानं ददौ विभुः
Having meditated upon you for a moment, the Lord granted her knowledge.
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं च स त्वां दध्यौ च पुष्करे उवाच शब्दशास्त्रं च तदर्थं च सुरेश्वरम्
For a thousand divine years he meditated upon you at Puṣkara, and he taught the science of words and its meaning to the lord of the gods.
