गर्दभो जन्मशतकं सूकरस्सप्तजन्मसु जलौका जन्मशतकं शुचिर्भवतु तत्परम्
Let one be born as a donkey for a hundred births, as a pig for seven births, as a leech for a hundred births, and then, at last, become pure.
वृथा मांसं च यो भुङ्क्ते स्वार्थं पाकान्नमेव च
Whoever eats flesh without purpose, or consumes food prepared for their own sake,
स यातु चन्द्रपापेन चासिपत्रं चतुर्युगम्
Let that person go to the moon's sin and endure the sword-leaf forest for four ages.
विप्रो वार्धुषिको यो हि योनिजीवी चिकित्सकः
A brāhmaṇa who is a barber, one who lives by the womb, or a physician,
स्वधर्मकथकश्चैव यश्च स्वात्मप्रशंसकः
One who tells stories of his own duty, or who praises himself,
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च चन्द्रो भवतु विज्वरः
Let him go to the moon's sin, and let the moon be freed from fever.
तत्र विद्धो भवतु स यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
There, let him be pierced as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
लाक्षामांसरसानां च तिलानां लवणस्य च
Of lac, flesh, juices, sesame seeds, and salt,
विप्रः कुलालः चौरश्च यातु तं चन्द्रपातकम्
A brāhmaṇa, a potter, or a thief—let them go to that moon-fall sin.
तत्र च्छिन्नो भवतु स यावदिन्द्रसहस्रकम् 2.58.
There, let him be cut asunder for as many as a thousand Indras.
सप्तजन्मसु मार्जारो महिषो जन्मपञ्चकम्
For seven births, let him be a cat; for five births, a buffalo.
मत्स्यत्वे जन्मशतकं कर्कटी जन्मपञ्चकम्
For a hundred births, let him be a fish; for five births, a crab.
नाविकः शवजीवी च व्याधश्च स्वर्णकारकः
A boatman, one who lives off corpses, a hunter, and a goldsmith,
इति चन्द्रं शुचिं कृत्वा समुवाच तु तारकाम्
Thus, having made the moon pure, he then spoke to Tārakā.
प्रायश्चित्तं विना पूता त्वमेवं शुद्धमानसा
Without atonement you are purified, being thus of pure mind.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा शुक्रश्च चन्द्रं वा तारकां सतीम्
Having spoken thus, Śukra addressed either the moon or the virtuous Tārakā.
श्रीनारायण उवाच ध्यात्वा स्तुत्वा च तिष्ठंतो देवास्ते तेजसः पुरः
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Meditating and praising, the gods stood before that radiance.
सजलांभोदवर्णाभं सस्मितं सुमनोहरम्
He appeared like a rain-filled cloud, smiling, supremely charming.
गंडस्थलकपोलाभ्यां ज्वलन्मकर कुण्डलम्
With cheeks and temples adorned by blazing makara-shaped earrings,
वह्निशुद्धहरिद्राभामूल्यवस्त्रविराजितम्
Resplendent in garments of radiant yellow, purified by fire,
भूषितं भूषणै रम्यैस्तद्रूपेणैव भूषितैः
Adorned with beautiful ornaments, each suited perfectly to her form,
प्रसन्नेक्षणपश्यंतं भक्तानुग्रहकातरम्
Her serene eyes gazing with compassion, eager to bestow grace upon devotees,
कौस्तुभासक्तसद्रत्नप्रदीप्ततेजसोज्ज्वलम्
Brilliant with the radiance of the Kaustubha gem, shining with splendid light,
पश्यंतं सस्मितं कांतं पश्यंतीं वक्रचक्षुषा
Beholding her, smiling and lovely, as she gazes with sidelong glances,
ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यां शरत्पंकजलोचनाम्
Her face slightly smiling and serene, her eyes like autumn lotuses,
बंधुजीवप्रभामुष्टाधरौष्ठरु चिराननाम् 4.6.
Her lips and face radiant as the hue of the bandhujiva flower,
मणींद्राणां प्रभामोषनखराजिविराजिताम्
Her form adorned by the brilliance of the foremost jewels and the king of gems,
अमूल्यरत्नसाराणां रशनाश्रोणिभूषिताम्
Her hips adorned with a girdle made of the essence of priceless gems,
महामणींद्रसाराणां किङ्किणीमध्यसंयुताम्
With a waistband of great jewels, set with tinkling bells at the center,
रत्नेंद्रसाररचितकपोलोज्ज्वलकुण्डलाम्
Her cheeks shining with earrings crafted from the finest gems,
