स्वकान्तं वञ्चयित्वा च या याति परपूरुषम् 2.58.
A woman who, deceiving her own husband, goes to another man—
कीर्त्तिं करोति रजसा परकीर्त्तिं विलुप्य च
One who gains fame through passion, or destroys another's reputation—
पितरं मातरं भार्य्यां यो न पुष्णाति पातकी
He who does not support his father, mother, or wife is a sinner.
कुलटान्नमवीरान्नमृतुस्नातान्नमेव च
Food from an adulteress, food from a coward, and food from one who bathes during her period—
स यातु तेन पापेन कुम्भीपाकं चतुर्युगम्
By that sin, let him go to Kumbhīpāka hell for four ages.
दिवसे यो ग्राम्यधर्मं महापापी करोति च
Whoever, during the day, commits worldly acts of unrighteousness is a great sinner.
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च महाघोरं च पापिनम्
Let that most wicked sinner go to Candrapāpa, a terrible hell.
मुखं श्रोणीं स्तनं चापि यः पश्यति परस्त्रियाः
He who looks at the face, hips, or breasts of another man's wife—
स यातु लालाभक्षं च चन्द्रपापाच्चतुर्युगम्
Let him eat saliva and go to Candrapāpa for four ages.
कुरुते ग्राम्यधर्मं च यातु तं चन्द्रकिल्बिषम् 2.58.
He who engages in worldly acts of unrighteousness, let him go to Candrakilbiṣa.
तस्मादुत्तीर्य्य चाण्डालीं योनिमाप्नोति पातकी
Therefore, having passed from there, the sinner attains the birth of a caṇḍāla woman.
एकादश्यां च यो भुङ्क्ते कृष्णजन्माष्टमीदिने
Whoever eats on the eleventh day or on the day of Kṛṣṇa's birth—
स यातु कुम्भीपाकं च यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
Let him go to Kumbhīpāka as long as there are fourteen Indras.
ताम्रस्थं दुग्धमाध्वीकमुच्छिष्टे घृतमेव च
Milk, honey, or ghee left in a copper vessel—
पीतशेष जलं चैव भुक्तशेषं तथौदनम्
Water left after drinking, and rice left after eating—
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च दुर्निवारं च दारुणम्
Let him go to Candrapāpa, dreadful and hard to escape.
स्वकन्याविक्रयी विप्रो देवलो वृषवाहकः
A brāhmaṇa who sells his own daughter, a false ascetic, or one who makes a bull carry loads—
अश्वत्थतरुघाती च विष्णुवैष्णवनिन्दकः
One who cuts down an aśvattha tree, or reviles Viṣṇu or his devotees—
स यातु तस्मात्पापाच्च तप्तसूर्मीं च पातकी
Let that sinner go to the hell of burning waves because of that sin.
तस्मादुतीर्य्य चाण्डालीं योनिमाप्नोति पातकी 2.58.
Therefore, having passed from there, the sinner attains the birth of a caṇḍāla woman.
गर्दभो जन्मशतकं सूकरस्सप्तजन्मसु जलौका जन्मशतकं शुचिर्भवतु तत्परम्
Let one be born as a donkey for a hundred births, as a pig for seven births, as a leech for a hundred births, and then, at last, become pure.
वृथा मांसं च यो भुङ्क्ते स्वार्थं पाकान्नमेव च
Whoever eats flesh without purpose, or consumes food prepared for their own sake,
स यातु चन्द्रपापेन चासिपत्रं चतुर्युगम्
Let that person go to the moon's sin and endure the sword-leaf forest for four ages.
विप्रो वार्धुषिको यो हि योनिजीवी चिकित्सकः
A brāhmaṇa who is a barber, one who lives by the womb, or a physician,
स्वधर्मकथकश्चैव यश्च स्वात्मप्रशंसकः
One who tells stories of his own duty, or who praises himself,
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च चन्द्रो भवतु विज्वरः
Let him go to the moon's sin, and let the moon be freed from fever.
तत्र विद्धो भवतु स यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
There, let him be pierced as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
लाक्षामांसरसानां च तिलानां लवणस्य च
Of lac, flesh, juices, sesame seeds, and salt,
विप्रः कुलालः चौरश्च यातु तं चन्द्रपातकम्
A brāhmaṇa, a potter, or a thief—let them go to that moon-fall sin.
तत्र च्छिन्नो भवतु स यावदिन्द्रसहस्रकम् 2.58.
There, let him be cut asunder for as many as a thousand Indras.
