यस्य चित्तं परस्त्रीषु सोऽशुचिः सर्वकर्मसु ।। न कर्मफलभाक्पापी निन्द्यो विश्वेषु सर्वतः 2.58.
He whose mind is set on other men’s wives is impure in all actions; he is sinful, not entitled to the fruits of deeds, and is condemned everywhere in the world.
सतीत्वं मे नाशयसि यक्ष्मग्रस्तो भविष्यसि
You destroy my chastity; you will be afflicted with consumption.
दुष्टानां दर्पहा कृष्णो दर्पं ते निहनिष्यति
Krishna, destroyer of the pride of the wicked, will shatter your arrogance.
इत्युक्त्वा तारका साध्वी रुरोद च मुहुर्मुहुः
Having spoken thus, the virtuous Tara wept again and again.
ब्रह्माणं परमात्मानमाकाशं पवनं धराम्
Brahma, the Supreme Self, the sky, the wind, and the earth—
तारकावचनं श्रुत्वा न भीतः स चुकोप ह
Hearing Tara’s words, he was not afraid, but became angry.
रथं च चालयामास मनोयायी मनोहरम्
He set the chariot in motion, moving by the mind, enchanting to behold.
विस्पन्दके सुरवने चन्दने पुष्पभद्रके
In the Vispandaka, the divine forest, among sandalwood and Puṣpabhadraka trees,
सुगन्धि पुष्पतल्पे च पुष्पचन्दनवायुना
On a fragrant bed of flowers, with breezes scented by flowers and sandalwood,
शैले शैले नदे नद्यां शृंगारं कुर्वतोस्तयोः
On every mountain, in every river, the two engaged in love-play.
बभूव शरणापन्नो भीतो दैत्येषु चन्द्रमाः 2.58.
The moon, frightened by the Daityas, sought refuge.
अभयं च ददौ तस्मै कृपया भृगुनन्दनः
Out of compassion, the son of Bhrigu granted him safety.
सभायां जहसुर्हृष्टा बलिनो दितिनन्दनाः
In the assembly, the powerful sons of Diti laughed joyfully.
सतीसतीत्वध्वंसेन पापिष्ठचन्द्रमण्डले
By the destruction of chastity, the wicked moon lost his luster.
उवाच तं महाभीतं शुक्रो वेदविदां वरः
Śukra, best among those learned in the Vedas, spoke to him, who was greatly afraid.
शुक्र उवाच दुर्नीतं कर्म ते पुत्र नीचवन्नयशस्करम्
Śukra said: 'Son, your deed is wicked, infamous, like that of a low man.'
राजसूयस्य सुफले निर्मले कीर्त्तिमण्डले
In the auspicious, pure circle of fame of the Rājasūya sacrifice,
त्यज देवगुरौ पत्नीं प्रसूमिव महासतीम्
Abandon the wife of the guru of the gods, as one casts off a flower after use, though she be supremely virtuous.
शम्भोः सुराणामीशस्य गुरुपुत्रस्य वेधसः
She is the wife of Śambhu, lord of the gods, the son of the guru, the creator.
शत्रोरपि गुणा वाच्या दोषा वाच्या गुरोरपि
Even the virtues of an enemy must be spoken, and the faults of a guru must also be spoken.
स शत्रुर्मे सुरगुरुः परो विश्वे निशाकर यत्र लोकाश्च धर्मिष्ठास्तत्र धर्मः सनातनः 2.58.
That guru of the gods is my enemy, O moon, but wherever the righteous dwell, there abides the eternal dharma.
यतो धर्मस्ततः कृष्णो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः
Where there is dharma, there is Kṛṣṇa; where there is Kṛṣṇa, there is victory.
हिंसकाः प्रलयं यान्ति धर्मो रक्षति धार्मिकम्
The violent meet destruction; dharma protects the righteous.
तथाऽपि नहि रक्षन्ति धर्मघ्नं पापिनं जनम्
Yet even so, dharma does not protect the destroyer of dharma, the sinful person.
ब्रह्महत्याषोडशांश पातकं च भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Certainly, it is a sin equal to one-sixteenth of the sin of killing a Brahmin.
विप्रपत्नीसतीनां च गमनं वै बलेन चेत्
If one forcibly approaches the wives of Brahmins or chaste women,
धर्म्मं चर महाभाग ब्राह्मणीं त्यज साम्प्रतम्
O highly fortunate one, practice righteousness and now abandon the Brahmin woman.
उपायेन च ते पापं दूरीभूतं भवेन्ननु
By proper means, your sin will indeed be removed.
शस्त्रहीनं च भीतं च दीनं च शरणार्थिनम्
One who is unarmed, fearful, distressed, and seeking refuge—
राजसूयशतानां च रक्षिता लभते फलम्
The protector of such a person obtains the fruit of performing a hundred Rājasūya sacrifices.
