तन्मध्ये शिशुरेकश्च शतकोटिरविप्रभः
In the midst of that, there was an infant, shining with the brilliance of ten million suns.
पितृमातृपरित्यक्तो जलमध्ये निराश्रयः
Abandoned by father and mother, he was without support in the midst of the waters.
स्थूलात्स्थूलतमः सोऽपि नाम्ना देवो महाविराट्
He was the grossest among the gross, and by name, the god Mahāvirāṭ.
तेजसां षोडशांशोऽयं कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः
He is one-sixteenth portion of the radiance of Krishna, the Supreme Self.
प्रत्येकं रोमकूपेषु विश्वानि निखिलानि च
In each and every pore of his skin exist all the worlds entirely.
यथाऽस्ति संख्या रजसां विश्वानां न कदाचन
Just as the number of worlds cannot ever be counted due to rajas,
प्रतिविश्वेषु सन्त्येवं ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः
So also, in each universe, there are Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others.
तत ऊर्ध्वे च वैकुण्ठो ब्रह्माण्डाद्बहिरेव सः
Above that is Vaikuṇṭha, which is indeed outside the cosmic egg.
तदूर्ध्वे गोलकश्चैव पञ्चाशत्कोटियोजनात् 2.3.
Above that is a sphere, measuring fifty crore yojanas.
सप्तद्वीपमिता पृथ्वी सप्तसागरसंयुता
The earth is composed of seven continents, joined with seven oceans.
ऊर्ध्वं सप्त सुवर्लोका ब्रह्मलोकसमन्विताः
Above are the seven heavenly realms, together with Brahmaloka.
ऊर्ध्वं धराया भूर्लोको भुवर्लोकस्ततः परः
Above the earth is Bhurloka, and beyond that is Bhuvarloka.
ततः परस्तपोलोकः सत्यलोकस्ततः परः
Beyond that is Tapoloka, and further still is Satyaloka.
एवं सर्वं कृत्रिमं तद्बाह्याभ्यन्तर एव च
Thus, all of this is artificial, both outside and within.
जलबुदुदवत्सर्वं विश्वसंघमनित्यकम्
Like bubbles in water, all the assemblies of the universe are impermanent.
लोमकूपे च विध्यण्डं प्रत्येकं तस्य निश्चितम्
In each pore of hair, certainly, there is a cosmic egg.
प्रत्येकं प्रतिविध्यण्डे ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः
In each and every cosmic egg are Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others.
दिगीशाश्चैव दिक्पाला नक्षत्राणि ग्रहादयः
There are also the guardians of the directions, the protectors of the quarters, stars, planets, and so on.
अथ कालेन स विराडूर्ध्वं दृष्ट्वा पुनः पुनः 2.3.
Then, in time, that Virat, looking upward again and again,
चिन्तामवाप क्षुद्युक्तो रुरोद च पुनः पुनः
Fell into thought, afflicted by hunger, and wept again and again.
ततो ददर्श तत्रैव ब्रह्म ज्योतिः सनातनम्
Then, right there, Brahma beheld the eternal light.
सस्मितं मुरलीहस्तं भक्तानुग्रहकारकम्
Smiling, holding a flute, the giver of grace to devotees.
वरं तस्मै ददौ तुष्टो वरेशः समयोचितम्
Pleased, the Lord of boons granted him a boon appropriate to the occasion.
ब्रह्माण्डासंख्यनिलयो भव वत्स लयावधि रोगमृत्युजराशोकपीडादिपरिवर्जितः
O child, become the abode of countless universes until dissolution, free from disease, death, old age, sorrow, and all afflictions.
इत्युक्त्वा तद्दक्षकर्णे महामन्त्रं षडक्षरम्
Having spoken thus, he uttered the great six-syllabled mantra in his right ear.
प्रणवादिचतुर्थ्यन्तं कृष्ण इत्यक्षरद्वयम्
Beginning with Om and ending in the fourth case, the two syllables 'Krishna.'
मन्त्रं दत्त्वा तदाहारं कल्पयामास वै प्रभुः
Having given the mantra, the Lord then arranged for the food offering.
प्रतिविश्वेषु नैवेद्यं दद्याद्वै वैष्णवो जनः
A Vaiṣṇava should offer food as naivedya in each of the universes.
निर्गुणस्यात्मनश्चैव परिपूर्णतमस्य च 2.3.
To the attributeless Self, who is also the completely full darkness,
यद्ददाति व नैवेद्यं यस्मै देवाय यो जनः
Whatever offering as naivedya a person gives, to whichever deity,
