वृक्षरूपा भविष्यामि तदधिष्ठातृदेवता
I will take the form of a tree and become its presiding deity.
गंगा सरस्वतीशापाद्यदि यास्यति भारतम्
If Gaṅgā, by Sarasvatī's curse, goes to Bhārata—
गंगाशापेन सा वाणी यदि यास्यति भारतम् 2.6.
If Vāṇī, by Gaṅgā's curse, goes to Bhārata—
तां वाणीं ब्रह्मसदनं गंगां वा शिवमन्दिरम्
Let that Vāṇī go to Brahmā's abode, or Gaṅgā to Śiva's temple.
इत्युक्त्वा कमला कान्तपदं धृत्वा ननाम च
Having spoken thus, Kamalā bowed, holding the feet of her beloved.
उवाच पद्मनाभस्तां प्रभां कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि
Padmanābha spoke to her, placing her radiance upon his own chest.
नारायण उवाच समतां च करिष्यामि शृणु तत्क्रममेव च
Nārāyaṇa said: I will bring about equality; listen now to the order of this.
भारती यातु कलया सरिद्रूपा च भारतम्
Let Bhāratī go in a partial form, as a river, to Bhārata.
भगीरथेन नीता सा गंगा यास्यति भारतम्
That Gaṅgā, brought by Bhagīratha, will go to Bhārata.
तत्रैव चन्द्रमौलेश्च मौलिं प्राप्स्यति दुर्लभम्
There she will attain the rare crown of the moon-crested Lord.
कलांशांशेन गच्छ त्वं भारते कमलोद्भवे
Go, O lotus-born, with a portion of your power into Bharata.
कलेः पञ्चसहस्रे च गते वर्षे च मोक्षणम्
When five thousand years of Kali have passed, liberation will occur.
सम्पदां हेतुभूता च विपत्तिः सर्वदेहिनाम् 2.6.
Misfortune, which is the cause of loss of wealth, will affect all embodied beings.
मन्मन्त्रोपासकानां च सतां स्नानावगाहनात्
Through bathing and immersion, the virtuous worshippers of my mantra
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि सन्त्यसंख्यानि सुन्दरि
On earth, O beautiful one, there are countless holy places.
मन्मन्त्रोपासका भक्ता भ्रमन्ते भारते सति
My mantra-worshipping devotees wander throughout Bharata.
मद्भक्ता यत्र तिष्ठन्ति पादं प्रक्षालयन्ति च
Where my devotees reside and wash their feet,
स्त्रीघ्नो गोघ्नः कृतघ्नश्च ब्रह्मघ्नो गुरुतल्पगः
A killer of women, a killer of cows, an ingrate, a slayer of Brahmins, one who violates the teacher’s bed,
एकादशीविहीनश्च सन्ध्याहीनोऽपि नास्तिकः
One who neglects Ekadashi, who omits the twilight worship, and even an atheist,
असिजीवी मषीजीवी धावकः शूद्रयाजकः
A sword-bearer, an ink-bearer, a runner, and a Shudra priest,
विश्वासघाती मित्रघ्नो मिथ्यासाक्ष्यप्रदायकः
A betrayer of trust, a killer of friends, a giver of false testimony,
ऋणग्रस्तो वार्द्धुषिको जारजः पुंश्चलीपतिः
One afflicted by debt, a usurer, an adulterer, the husband of a promiscuous woman,
शूद्राणां सूपकारश्च देवलो ग्रामयाजकः 2.6.
A cook for Shudras, Devala, and a village priest for Shudras,
अश्वत्थघातकश्चैव मद्भक्तानां च निन्दकः
One who destroys the sacred fig tree and one who reviles my devotees,
मातरं पितरं भार्य्यां भ्रातरं तनयं सुताम्
One who does not support his mother, father, wife, brother, son, or daughter,
श्वश्रूं च श्वशुरं चैव यो न पुष्णाति नारद
And one who does not support his mother-in-law and father-in-law, O Narada,
देवद्रव्यापहारी च विप्रद्रव्यापहारकः
One who steals the property of the gods and one who steals the property of Brahmins,
महापातकिनश्चैते शूद्राणां शवदाहकाः
These are great sinners, and among Shudras, those who burn corpses.
लक्ष्मीरुवाच येषां सन्दर्शनस्पर्शात्सद्यः पूता नराधमाः
Lakshmi said: By the sight and touch of whom, even the most fallen among men are instantly purified,
हरिभक्तिविहीनाश्च महाहङ्कारसंयुताः
who are devoid of devotion to Hari and filled with great pride,
