सर्वैश्वर्य्यप्रदात्री च कामिनां गृहमेधिनाम्
Bestower of all prosperity to those who desire, to householders,
मुमुक्षूणां मोक्षदात्री सुखिनां सुखदायिनी
Giver of liberation to the seekers of freedom, giver of happiness to the happy,
तपस्विषु तपस्या च श्रीरूपा सा नृपेषु च
She is austerity among ascetics, beauty among kings,
शोभास्वरूपा चन्द्रे च पद्मेषु च सुशोभना
She is the very form of splendor in the moon, and is most beautiful among lotuses.
यया च शक्तिमानात्मा यया वै शक्तिमज्जगत्
By whom the self is empowered, and by whom indeed the world is endowed with power,
या च संसारवृक्षस्य बीजरूपा सनातनी
She who is the eternal seed-form of the tree of worldly existence,
क्षुत्पिपासा दया श्रद्धा निद्रा तन्द्रा क्षमा धृतिः
Hunger, thirst, compassion, faith, sleep, drowsiness, forgiveness, fortitude—
सा च संस्तूय सर्वेशं तत्पुरः समुपस्थिता
She, having been praised, stood before the Lord of all.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र सस्त्रीकश्च चतुर्मुखः 2.2.
Meanwhile, there appeared there the Four-faced One, together with his wife.
कमण्डलुधरः श्रीमांस्तपस्वी ज्ञानिनां वरः
Bearing a water-pot, glorious, an ascetic, foremost among the wise.
सुदती सुन्दरी श्रेष्ठा शतचन्द्रसमप्रभा
She was fair of form, most beautiful, radiant like a hundred moons.
रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये स्तुता वै सर्वकारणम्
Seated upon a splendid jeweled throne, she was praised as the cause of all things.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे कृष्णो द्विधारूपो बभूव सः
At that very moment, Krishna became manifest in two forms.
शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशः शतकोटिरविप्रभः
One was clear as pure crystal, shining with the brilliance of ten million suns.
तप्तकाञ्चनवर्णाभ जटाभारधरः परः
The other had the hue of molten gold, bearing matted locks, transcendent.
दिगम्बरो नीलकण्ठः सर्प भूषणभूषितः
Clad in the directions alone, blue-throated, adorned with serpents as ornaments.
प्रजपन्पञ्चवक्त्रेण ब्रह्मज्योतिः सनातनम्
Chanting with five faces, he was the eternal light of Brahman.
कारणं कारणानां च सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गलम्
He is the cause of all causes, the most auspicious among all that is auspicious.
संस्तूय मृत्योर्मृत्युं तं जातो मृत्युञ्जयाभिधः 2.2.
Having been praised as Death of death, he became known as Mṛtyuñjaya.
श्रीनारायण उवाच ततः स्वकाले सहसा द्विधारूपो बभूव सः
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Then, at the proper time, he suddenly became twofold in form.
तन्मध्ये शिशुरेकश्च शतकोटिरविप्रभः
In the midst of that, there was an infant, shining with the brilliance of ten million suns.
पितृमातृपरित्यक्तो जलमध्ये निराश्रयः
Abandoned by father and mother, he was without support in the midst of the waters.
स्थूलात्स्थूलतमः सोऽपि नाम्ना देवो महाविराट्
He was the grossest among the gross, and by name, the god Mahāvirāṭ.
तेजसां षोडशांशोऽयं कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः
He is one-sixteenth portion of the radiance of Krishna, the Supreme Self.
प्रत्येकं रोमकूपेषु विश्वानि निखिलानि च
In each and every pore of his skin exist all the worlds entirely.
यथाऽस्ति संख्या रजसां विश्वानां न कदाचन
Just as the number of worlds cannot ever be counted due to rajas,
प्रतिविश्वेषु सन्त्येवं ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः
So also, in each universe, there are Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others.
तत ऊर्ध्वे च वैकुण्ठो ब्रह्माण्डाद्बहिरेव सः
Above that is Vaikuṇṭha, which is indeed outside the cosmic egg.
तदूर्ध्वे गोलकश्चैव पञ्चाशत्कोटियोजनात् 2.3.
Above that is a sphere, measuring fifty crore yojanas.
सप्तद्वीपमिता पृथ्वी सप्तसागरसंयुता
The earth is composed of seven continents, joined with seven oceans.
