किं वा न दग्धः प्रययौ नभोमध्यं सुदारुणम् । वह्निं चिक्षेप बाणश्च सात्यकिर्वारुणेन च
Why was he not burned? The weapon rose to the dreadful mid-sky; Bāṇa hurled the fire-missile, and Sātyaki countered with the Varuṇa missile.
प्रज्वलन्तं तालमानं निर्वाणं च चकार सः । चिच्छेद वारुणं घोरं प्रजण्डं भीममुल्बणम्
He extinguished the blazing, palm-sized fire; he cut down the terrible, mighty, and fearsome Varuṇa missile.
चिच्छेद सात्यकिश्चैव पार्जन्येनावलीलया । चिक्षेप पवनं बाणः प्रचण्डं भीममुल्बणम्
Sātyaki, with the Parjanya missile, effortlessly destroyed it; Bāṇa then released the fierce and dreadful wind-missile.
चिच्छेद सात्यकिश्चैव पर्वताश्त्रेण लीलया । नारायणस्त्रं चिक्षेप बाणश्च रणमूर्धनि
Sātyaki, with the mountain-missile, easily cut it down; Bāṇa then hurled the Nārāyaṇa missile at the center of the battle.
सात्यकिर्दण्डवद्भूमौ पपातार्जुनशिक्षया । माहेश्वरं प्रचिक्षेप बाणः शस्त्रविदां वरः
Sātyaki fell to the ground in prostration, as taught by Arjuna; Bāṇa, foremost among weapon-knowers, released the mighty Maheśvara missile.
सात्यकिर्वैष्णवास्त्रेण प्रविच्छेदावलीलया । ब्रह्मास्त्रं चापि चिक्षेप बाणश्च रणमूर्धनि
Sātyaki, with the Viṣṇu missile, effortlessly neutralized it; Bāṇa then hurled the Brahmāstra at the heart of the battle.
क्षणं चकार निर्वाणं ब्रह्मास्त्रेण च सात्यकिः । नागास्त्रं चापि चिक्षेप बाणो रणविशारदः
Sātyaki, with the Brahmāstra, instantly rendered it harmless; then Bāṇa, expert in battle, released the Nāga missile.
सात्यकिर्गारुडेनैव संजहार क्षणेन च । जग्राह शूलमव्यर्थं शंकरस्य सुदारुणम्
Sātyaki, with the Garuḍa missile, neutralized it in a moment; then he seized the unfailing trident of Śaṅkara, exceedingly dreadful.
तुष्टाव सात्यकिर्दुर्गा गले माल्यं बभूव ह । जग्राह धनुषा बाणो बाणं पाशुपतं तथा
Sātyaki praised Durgā, and a garland appeared at his throat; Bāṇa took up his bow and the Pāśupata missile as well.
बाणं सबाणं जृम्भं च सात्यकिश्च चकार ह । बाणं तं जृम्भितं दृष्ट्वा कार्तिकेयो महाबलः
Bāṇa, with his arrow, invoked the Jṛmbha missile; Sātyaki too invoked Jṛmbha; seeing that weapon invoked, mighty Kārtikeya—
अर्धचन्द्रं च चिक्षेप कामश्चिच्छेद लीलया । गदां चक्षेप च स्कन्दः प्रातः सूर्यसमप्रभाम्
Kāma released the crescent-shaped arrow, which Kārtikeya effortlessly cut down; Skanda hurled his mace, shining like the morning sun.
वैष्णवास्त्रेण कामश्च निर्वाणं च चकार सः । नारायणस्त्रं स्कन्दश्च प्राक्षिपच्च त्वरान्वितः
With the Viṣṇu missile, Kāma rendered it harmless; Skanda, filled with haste, then released the Nārāyaṇa missile.
पपात दण्डवद्भूमौ प्रद्युम्नः कृष्णशिक्षया । स्कन्दः शक्तिं च चिक्षेप प्रलयग्निसमप्रभाम्
Pradyumna, following Kṛṣṇa's instruction, fell to the ground in prostration; Skanda hurled his spear, blazing like the fire of dissolution.
कामो नारायणास्त्रेण निर्वाणं च चकार ताम् । ब्रह्मास्त्रं च प्रचिक्षेप कार्तिको रणमूर्धनि
Kāma, with the Nārāyaṇa missile, rendered it harmless; Kārtikeya then released the Brahmāstra at the center of the battle.
ब्रह्मास्त्रेणापि कामश्च निर्वाणं च चकार सः । जग्राह कार्तिकं कोपाद्दिव्यं पाशुपतं तदा
Even with the Brahmāstra, Kāmadeva brought about annihilation; then, out of anger, he took up the divine Pāśupata weapon of Kārtikeya.
निद्रास्त्रेणापि मदनो निद्रितं च चकार तम् । कार्तिकं निद्रितं दृष्ट्वा बाणं च जृम्भितं तथा
With the weapon of sleep, Madana caused Kārtikeya to fall asleep; seeing Kārtikeya asleep and Bāṇa overcome by yawning,
कोपात्कामं च सरथं जग्राह भद्रकालिका । क्रोडे कृत्वा च बाणं च स्कन्दं च जगतां प्रसूः
Out of wrath, Bhadrakālikā seized Kāmadeva along with his chariot; placing Bāṇa and Skanda in her lap, the mother of the worlds,
रणस्थलाच्च प्रययौ यत्रैव पार्वती सती । कार्तिकं बोधयामास बाणं सुस्थं चकार सा
She departed from the battlefield to where Pārvatī, the virtuous one, was; she awakened Kārtikeya and restored Bāṇa to soundness.
सहसासरथः कामो नासारन्ध्रेण वर्त्मना । बहिर्बभूव संत्रस्तः प्रययौ च रणस्थलम्
Suddenly, Kāmadeva, with his chariot, fled in terror through the passage of the nostril and emerged outside, then returned to the battlefield.
दृष्ट्का कामं च सरथं जहसुर्यादवास्तदा । सर्वे शैवाश्च तत्रस्थाः शुष्ककण्ठा भयकुलाः
Seeing Kāmadeva with his chariot, the Yādavas abandoned him at that moment; all the Śaivas present there, their throats dry and filled with fear,
अथ बाणः पुनः क्रुद्धो रथमारुह्य कोपतः । कार्तिकेयश्च भगवान्युद्धाय पुनरागतः
Then Bāṇa, enraged once more, mounted his chariot in fury; and the blessed Kārtikeya returned to the battle, having been revived.
बाणः पञ्च शरांश्चैव चिक्षेप रणमूर्धनि । अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद बलदेवो महाबलः
Bāṇa released five arrows at the height of battle; Baladeva, of great strength, cut them down with a crescent-tipped arrow.
रथं बभञ्ज बाणस्य लाङ्गलेन च लाङ्गली । जघन सूतमश्वांश्च मुसलेनावलीलया
The wielder of the plough broke Bāṇa's chariot with his plough; with his mighty mace, he struck down the charioteer and the horses.
कुर्वन्तमुद्यमं छेत्तुं हलिनं च महाबलः । कालाग्निरुद्रो भगवान्वारयामास लीलया
As the powerful wielder of the plough prepared to strike, the blessed Kālāgni-Rudra effortlessly restrained him.
रथं कालाग्निरुद्रस्य बभञ्ज लाङ्गली रुषा । हलेन सूतमश्वाश्च जधान रणमूर्धनि
Lāṅgalī, in anger, broke Kālāgni-Rudra's chariot; with his plough, he struck down the charioteer and horses in the midst of battle.
कालाग्निरुद्रः कोपेन चिक्षेप जवरमुल्वणम् । बभूवुर्यादवाः सर्वे ज्वराक्रान्ता हरिं विना
Kālāgni-Rudra, in fury, unleashed a terrible fever; all the Yādavas, except Hari, were afflicted by that fever.
तं दृष्ट्वा भगवान्कृष्णः ससर्ज वैष्णवं ज्वरम् । तं चिक्षेप ज्वरं हन्तुं माहेशं रणमूर्धनि
Seeing this, the blessed Kṛṣṇa created a Vaiṣṇava fever; he sent forth that fever to destroy the Śaiva fever on the battlefield.
बभूव ज्वरयोर्युद्धं मुहूर्तमतिदारुणम् । वैष्णवज्वरनिष्कान्तो रणमीर्ध्नि पपात सः
There was a fierce battle between the two fevers for a moment; vanquished by the Vaiṣṇava fever, the other fell on the battlefield.
ज्वर उवाच प्रणान्रक्ष जगन्नाथ भक्तानुग्रहविग्रह । त्वमात्मा पुरुषः पुर्णः सर्वत्र समता तव
The Fever said: 'Protect the living beings, O Lord of the universe, embodiment of grace to devotees; you are the Self, the complete Person, your equanimity is everywhere.'
ज्वरस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा संजहार स्वकं ज्वरम् । माहेश्वरो ज्वरो भीतो रणादेव हि निर्ययौ
Hearing the words of the Fever, he withdrew his own fever; the Śaiva fever, frightened, departed from the battlefield.
