सर्वेषामीश्वरं बीजं दातारं सर्वसंपदम् । वरं वरेप्यं शरणं कृपालुं भक्तवत्सलम्
He is the Lord of all, the seed of all, the giver of every prosperity, the supreme boon, the most worthy to be sought, the refuge, compassionate, and devoted to his followers.
पार्वतीवचनं श्रुत्वा तमूचुस्ते सुरेश्वराः । प्रशसंसुःसभामध्ये धन्यधन्येति सर्वदा
Hearing Parvati’s words, the lords of the gods spoke to him; in the midst of the assembly, they praised her, always saying, 'Blessed, blessed.'
कोपाविष्टश्च बाणोऽयमुत्तस्थौ सहसाऽसुरः । सांनाहिको धनुष्पाणिः प्रणम्य शंकरं ययौ
Bana, seized by anger, suddenly rose—the demon, fully armed, with bow in hand, bowed to Shankara and departed.
सर्वैर्निषिध्यमानश्च कम्पितो रक्तलोचनः । सांनाहिकश्च दैत्यानां त्रिकोट्या च महाबलः
Though restrained by all, trembling, with bloodshot eyes, fully armed, he was accompanied by the mighty three crore daityas.
कुम्भाण्डः कूपकर्णश्च निकुम्भः कुम्भ एव च । सेनापतीश्वरश्चैते ययुः सांनाहिकास्तथा
Kumbhanda, Kupakarna, Nikumbha, and Kumbha himself, along with the lord of the army—these fully armed ones also went.
उन्मत्तभैरवश्चैव संहारभैरवस्तथा । असिताङ्गो भैरवश्च रुरुभैरव एव च
Unmatta Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava, Asitanga Bhairava, and Ruru Bhairava likewise went.
महाभैरवसंज्ञश्च कालभैरव एव च । प्रचण्डभैरवश्चैव क्रोधभैरव एव च
Mahabhairava, Kalabhairava, Pracanda Bhairava, and Krodha Bhairava also went.
प्रययुः शक्तिभिः सार्ध सर्वे सांनाहिकाश्च ते । कालाग्गिरुद्रो भगवान्रुद्रैः सांनाहिको ययौ
All those fully armed ones went together with their powers; Bhagavan Rudra, the lord of time and fire, went with the Rudras, fully armed.
उग्रचण्डा प्रचण्डा च चण्डिका चण्डिनायिका । चण्डेश्वरी च चामुण्डा चण्डी चण्डकपालिका
Ugrachanda, Pracanda, Chandika, Chandinayika, Chandesvari, Chamunda, Chandi, and Chandakapali went.
अष्टौ च नायिकाः सर्वाः प्रययुः खर्पराविन्ताः । कोटरी रत्नयानस्था शोणितग्रामदेवता
All eight leaders went, bearing skulls; Kotari, riding a jeweled vehicle, and the deity of the blood village went.
प्रययौ सा प्रफुल्लास्या खड्गखर्परधारिणी । इन्द्राणी वैष्णवी शान्ता ब्रह्माणी ब्रह्मवादिनी
She went, her face blooming, bearing sword and skull; Indrani, Vaishnavi, Shanta, Brahmani, and Brahmavadini.
कौमारी नारसिंही च वाराही विकटाकृतिः । माहेश्वरी महामाया भैरवी भीमरूपिणी
Kaumari, Narasimhi, Varahi of fierce form, Maheshvari, Mahamaya, Bhairavi, and Bhimarupini.
अष्टौ च शक्तयः सर्वा रथस्थाः प्रययुर्मुदा । रत्नेन्द्रसारयानस्था प्रययौ भद्रकालिका
All eight powers, joyful, went riding chariots; Bhadrakali went riding a jeweled vehicle.
रक्तवर्णा त्रिनयना जिह्वाललनभीषणा । शूलशक्तिगदाहस्ता खड्गखर्परधारिणी
Red in color, three-eyed, with a terrifying tongue, holding spear, power, mace, sword, and skull.
प्रययौ शूलहस्तश्च वृषभस्थो महेश्वरः । स्कन्दश्च शिखियानस्थः शस्त्रपाणिर्धनुर्धरः
Maheshvara, holding a spear, riding a bull, went; Skanda, riding a peacock, armed with weapons and bow, went.
एवं च प्रययुः सर्वे गणेशं पार्वतीं विना । एभिर्युक्तं महादेवं दृष्ट्वा च भद्रकालिकाम्
Thus, all went, except for Ganesha and Parvati; seeing Mahadeva accompanied by these and Bhadrakali.
प्रचक्रे चक्रपाणिश्च संभाषां च यथोचिताम् । बाणः शङ्कध्वनिं कृत्वा प्रणम्य पार्वतीश्वरम्
The wielder of the discus, having spoken as was proper, sounded his conch, and, bowing to Parvati's Lord, Bāṇa prepared himself.
धनुर्दथार सगुणं दिव्यास्त्रेण नियोजितम् । बाणं समुद्यतं दृष्ट्वा सात्यकिः परवीरहा
He took up his bow, strung and fitted with a divine missile; seeing Bāṇa thus ready, Sātyaki, the destroyer of enemy heroes—
निषिध्यमानस्तैः सर्वैः संनाही प्रययौ मुदा । बाणश्चिक्षेप दिव्यास्त्रमञ्जनं नाम नारद
Though restrained by all, he, fully armored, advanced joyfully; and Bāṇa, O Nārada, released the divine missile called Añjana.
अव्यर्थं ग्रीष्ममध्याहनमार्तण्डाभं सुतीक्ष्णकम् । दृष्टावाऽस्त्रं सात्यकिः साक्षात्किंचिन्नम्रो बभूव सः
It was like the scorching midday sun in summer, exceedingly fierce and sharp; seeing that weapon, Sātyaki bowed slightly in acknowledgment.
किं वा न दग्धः प्रययौ नभोमध्यं सुदारुणम् । वह्निं चिक्षेप बाणश्च सात्यकिर्वारुणेन च
Why was he not burned? The weapon rose to the dreadful mid-sky; Bāṇa hurled the fire-missile, and Sātyaki countered with the Varuṇa missile.
प्रज्वलन्तं तालमानं निर्वाणं च चकार सः । चिच्छेद वारुणं घोरं प्रजण्डं भीममुल्बणम्
He extinguished the blazing, palm-sized fire; he cut down the terrible, mighty, and fearsome Varuṇa missile.
चिच्छेद सात्यकिश्चैव पार्जन्येनावलीलया । चिक्षेप पवनं बाणः प्रचण्डं भीममुल्बणम्
Sātyaki, with the Parjanya missile, effortlessly destroyed it; Bāṇa then released the fierce and dreadful wind-missile.
चिच्छेद सात्यकिश्चैव पर्वताश्त्रेण लीलया । नारायणस्त्रं चिक्षेप बाणश्च रणमूर्धनि
Sātyaki, with the mountain-missile, easily cut it down; Bāṇa then hurled the Nārāyaṇa missile at the center of the battle.
सात्यकिर्दण्डवद्भूमौ पपातार्जुनशिक्षया । माहेश्वरं प्रचिक्षेप बाणः शस्त्रविदां वरः
Sātyaki fell to the ground in prostration, as taught by Arjuna; Bāṇa, foremost among weapon-knowers, released the mighty Maheśvara missile.
सात्यकिर्वैष्णवास्त्रेण प्रविच्छेदावलीलया । ब्रह्मास्त्रं चापि चिक्षेप बाणश्च रणमूर्धनि
Sātyaki, with the Viṣṇu missile, effortlessly neutralized it; Bāṇa then hurled the Brahmāstra at the heart of the battle.
क्षणं चकार निर्वाणं ब्रह्मास्त्रेण च सात्यकिः । नागास्त्रं चापि चिक्षेप बाणो रणविशारदः
Sātyaki, with the Brahmāstra, instantly rendered it harmless; then Bāṇa, expert in battle, released the Nāga missile.
सात्यकिर्गारुडेनैव संजहार क्षणेन च । जग्राह शूलमव्यर्थं शंकरस्य सुदारुणम्
Sātyaki, with the Garuḍa missile, neutralized it in a moment; then he seized the unfailing trident of Śaṅkara, exceedingly dreadful.
तुष्टाव सात्यकिर्दुर्गा गले माल्यं बभूव ह । जग्राह धनुषा बाणो बाणं पाशुपतं तथा
Sātyaki praised Durgā, and a garland appeared at his throat; Bāṇa took up his bow and the Pāśupata missile as well.
बाणं सबाणं जृम्भं च सात्यकिश्च चकार ह । बाणं तं जृम्भितं दृष्ट्वा कार्तिकेयो महाबलः
Bāṇa, with his arrow, invoked the Jṛmbha missile; Sātyaki too invoked Jṛmbha; seeing that weapon invoked, mighty Kārtikeya—
