द्रोणः प्रजापतिः श्रेष्ठा धरा तस्य प्रिया सती । पुत्रं च तपसा लेभे परमात्मानमीश्वरम्
Droṇa, the foremost Prajāpati, and Dhara, his beloved wife, obtained a son through austerity, the supreme soul, the lord.
द्रोणो नन्दो वैश्यराजो यशोदा सा धरा सती । वृषभानसुता राधा सुदाम्नः शापकारणात्
Droṇa became Nanda, king of the Vaiśyas; Yaśodā was Dhara, the virtuous wife. Rādhā, daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, was Sudāmā's due to a curse.
त्रिंशत्कोटिं च गोपीनां गृहीत्वा भर्तुराज्ञया । पुण्यं च भारतं क्षेत्रं गोलोकादाजगामसा
Taking thirty crore gopīs by the husband's command, she came from Goloka to the sacred land of Bhārata.
ताभिः सार्ध स रेमे च स्वपत्नीभिर्मुदाऽन्वितः । पाणिं जग्राह राधायाः स्वयं ब्रह्मा पुरोहितः
With them, he enjoyed together with his own wives, filled with joy; he took Rādhā's hand, with Brahmā himself as priest.
गोपकोटिश्च गोलोकादाजगाम् मृदाऽन्विता । तेजसा हरितुल्यास्ते पार्षदप्रवरा हरेः
A crore of cowherds came from Goloka, accompanied by earth; equal in brilliance to Hari, they were the foremost attendants of Hari.
गोरक्षणं हरेरेव गोपवेषस्य चाऽऽत्मनः । गोपानां शिशुरक्षार्थं मायेशस्यापि मायया
The protection of cows belongs to Hari himself, who took the form of a cowherd; for the sake of protecting the children of the cowherds, even Māyeśa used his own illusion.
पूतना बलिकन्या च भगिनी च तवासुर । दृष्ट्वा च वामनं विन्ध्या चकार पुत्रमानसम्
Pūtanā, daughter of Bali, and your sister, O asura, seeing Vāmana, in Vindhya, conceived the thought of a son.
एवंभूतो यदि मम पुत्रो भवति सांप्रतम् । स्तनं ददामि तनयं कृत्वा वक्षसि सुन्दरम्
If such a son becomes mine now, I will give him my breast, making the child beautiful upon my chest.
तस्याःपूर्णं मानसं च चकार भगवान्प्रभुः । स्तनं दत्त्वा च गोलोकं ययौ सा रत्नयानतः
The Lord fulfilled her mind's desire; after giving her his breast, she went to Goloka, honored with a jeweled vehicle.
कुब्जा सा भगिनी पूर्वं रावणस्य दुरात्मनः । श्रीरामं चकमे कामान्नाम्ना शूर्पणखा सती
That hunchbacked woman was formerly the sister of Rāvaṇa, the wicked; out of desire, she sought Śrī Rāma, named Śūrpaṇakhā, the virtuous.
नासां चिच्छेद तस्याश्च लक्ष्मणो धार्मिकेश्वरः । तपसा च वरं लेभे ब्रह्मणः प्रियमीश्वरम्
Lakṣmaṇa, the lord of dharma, cut off her nose; through austerity, she obtained a boon, the beloved Lord from Brahmā.
तेन पुण्येन तंलब्ध्वा गोलोकं सा जगाम ह । गोपी बभूव गोलोके कृष्णस्याऽऽलिङ्गनेन च
By that merit, having attained Goloka, she went there; she became a gopī in Goloka, through Kṛṣṇa's embrace.
नरको हरिवध्यश्च स्वपूर्वप्राक्तनेन च । पाणिं जग्राह कन्यानां साक्षिणौ शशिभास्करौ
By the force of their previous actions, Naraka and Harivadhya took the hands of maidens in marriage, with the Moon and Sun as witnesses.
भीष्मकन्या महालक्ष्मीः शीकृष्णस्य प्रिया सती । वैकुण्ठादागता साध्वी ब्रह्मणोऽनृमतेन च
Bhīṣmaka's daughter, Mahālakṣmī, the beloved and faithful wife of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, descended from Vaikuṇṭha, pure and true, by the will of Brahmā.
सत्राजितस्य कन्या सा सत्यभामा वसुंधर । ददौ कृष्णाय राजा स तं मणिं यौतुकेन च
Satrājita's daughter, Satyabhāmā, the earth-goddess, was given by the king to Kṛṣṇa, along with that jewel as her bridal gift.
भुवो भारावतरणहेतुना गमनं हरेः । संजहार भुवो भारं कुरुपाण्डवयुद्धतः
For the purpose of relieving the burden of the earth, Hari descended; he removed the earth's weight through the war between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas.
शिशुपालो दन्तवक्त्रो जयो विजय एव च । द्वारिणौ द्वारषट्के च वैकुण्ठे श्रीहरेरपि
Śiśupāla, Dantavakra, Jaya, and Vijaya—these two were the gatekeepers among the six at the gates of Vaikuṇṭha, the abode of Śrī Hari.
कुमारशापात्पतितौ प्राप्य जन्मत्रयं ध्रुवम् । हिरण्यकशिपुश्चैव तवैव पूर्वपूरुषः
Fallen by the curse of Kumāra, they certainly obtained three births; Hiraṇyakaśipu was your own former ancestor.
तस्य भ्राता हिरण्याक्षस्तेनैव वरुणो जितः । हरिर्नृसिंहरूपेण तं जघानावलीलया
His brother Hiraṇyākṣa, who conquered Varuṇa, was slain by Hari in the form of Narasiṃha, playfully.
सूकरेण हतोऽन्यश्च पूर्वजन्मकथां शृणु । द्वितीये जन्मनि पुरा रावणः कुम्भकर्णकः
Another was killed by the Boar incarnation; listen to the story of their previous births: in their second birth, they were Rāvaṇa and Kumbhakarṇa.
श्रीरामेण हतौ तौ द्वौ शेषजन्म कलौ तयोः । श्रीकृष्णेन हतौ तौ द्वौ धर्मपुत्रावुभौ तथा
Those two were slain by Śrī Rāma; in the age of Kali, their final birth, both were killed by Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as the sons of Dharma.
जरासंधश्च शाल्वश्च दुरात्मा कंस एव च । प्राक्तनात्तस्य वध्यास्ते भुवो भारजिहीर्षया
Jarāsandha, Śālva, the wicked Kaṃsa—all these were destined to be slain by him, to lighten the burden of the earth.
मांधातुः सुतमध्ये च यवनश्चापि प्राक्तनात् । लक्ष्मीश्वरस्य कृष्णस्य धनेन किं प्रयोजनमा
Among the sons of Māṃdhātṛ, the Yavana too, from previous karma; what use has Lakṣmī's lord, Kṛṣṇa, for wealth?
प्रतिज्ञया च सत्यायाः पुण्यकव्रतकारणात् । पारिजातं समनीय चकार स्वात्मनो व्रतम्
By the vow of truthfulness and for the sake of a meritorious vow, he brought the Pārijāta tree and performed his own vow.
स्वयं जाम्बवती देवी दुर्गांशा भल्लुकात्मजा । पाणिं जग्राह तस्याश्च तपसा भारते हरिः
Jāmbavatī herself, the goddess, a portion of Durgā and daughter of the bear-king, was wed to Hari in Bhārata through her own austerity.
कुन्त्याश्च क्षेत्रजाः पुत्राः केवलं भर्तुराज्ञया । कलौ निषिद्धं त्रियुगे प्रसिद्धं पलपैतृकम्
Kuntī's sons, born by the seed of gods, were begotten only by her husband's command; in Kali this is forbidden, but in the three previous ages, it was known as the practice of niyoga.
युधिष्ठिरो धर्मपुत्रो भीमश्च पवनात्मजः । महेन्द्रपुत्रो धर्मिष्ठः फाल्गुनो विजयी भुवि
Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Dharma; Bhīma, son of the Wind; the righteous Indra's son; and Phālguna, victorious on earth.
यस्मै पाशुपतं शंभुः प्रददौ च स्वयं पुरा । अश्वमेधं गवालम्भं संन्यासं पलपैतृकम्
To whom Śaṃbhu himself once gave the Pāśupata weapon, the aśvamedha, the cow-sacrifice, renunciation, and the practice of niyoga.
देवरेण सुतोत्पत्तिं कलौ पञ्च विवर्जयेत् । द्रौपद्याः पञ्च भर्तारः शंकरस्य वरेण च
In Kali, one should avoid begetting children by a brother-in-law; Draupadī's five husbands were by the boon of Śaṃkara.
बलदेवः पुष्पमधु पूतं पिबति नित्यशः । चकार यमुनाह्वानं स्नानार्थं धार्मिकः शुचिः
Balarāma, ever pure and righteous, always drank the purified nectar of flowers and honey, and summoned the Yamunā for his bath.
