बाणस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा चुकोप कामनन्दनः । उवाच परमार्थं च योग्यं प्रत्युत्तरं मुने
Hearing the words of Bāṇa, the son of desire became angry; he spoke the highest truth and a fitting reply to the sage.
अनिरुद्ध उवाच पिता मे कामदेवश्च ब्रह्मपुत्रः पुरा शुचिः । यस्यास्त्रेण वशीभूतं त्रैलोक्यं सततं शृणु
Aniruddha said: My father is Kāma, son of Brahmā, formerly pure; by whose weapon the three worlds were always subdued—listen.
शिवकोपानलेनैव भस्मीभूतः स्वकर्मतः । कृष्णस्य पुत्रोऽप्यधुना सर्वेषां परमात्मनः
By the fire of Śiva’s wrath, he was reduced to ashes by his own actions; now, even the son of Kṛṣṇa is the supreme soul of all.
पतिव्रता रतिर्माता पतिशोकेन सांप्रतम् । शम्बरस्य गृहे तस्थौ हृता तेन बलेन च
My mother Rati, devoted to her husband, now dwells in the house of Śambara, seized by him through force, grieving for her husband.
छायां मायावतीं दत्त्वा मायया शयनेन च । रतिं स्वधर्म संरक्ष्य धर्मसाक्षी च तद्गृहे
Giving Māyāvatī as a shadow, by illusion and with a bed, he preserved the act of union according to his own duty, with Dharma as witness, in that house.
निहत्य शम्बरं शत्रुं गृहीत्वा स्वप्रियां सतीम् । आजगाम द्वारकां च चन्द्रसुर्यौ च साक्षिणौ
Having slain Śambara, the enemy, and taking his beloved, the virtuous woman, he came to Dvārakā, with the Moon and Sun as witnesses.
पितामहं वासुदेवं त्वं किं जानामि मूढवत् । यं च सन्तोन जानन्ति वेदाश्चत्वार एव च
Grandfather Vāsudeva, what do I know, as if ignorant? Even the saints do not know him, nor do the four Vedas.
वासुः सर्वनिवासश्च विश्वानि यस्य लोमसु । तस्य देवः परं ब्रह्म वासुदेव इति स्मृतः
Vāsu is the abode of all; the universe dwells in his hairs. That god, the supreme Brahman, is remembered as Vāsudeva.
शंकरं पृच्छ साक्षाच्च यस्य भृत्योऽधुना भवान् । कृष्णभृत्यस्य च बलेः पुत्रोऽसि किंकरात्मजः
Ask Śaṃkara directly, of whom you are now a servant; you are the son of Bali, a servant of Kṛṣṇa's devotee.
गोकुले वैश्यपुत्रत्वं ब्रूहि त्वं ज्ञानदुर्बल । भोजनं वेदविहितं शश्वत्क्षत्त्रियवैश्ययोः
Speak of the birth as a Vaiśya in Gokula, you who are weak in knowledge; food prescribed by the Vedas is always for Kṣatriyas and Vaiśyas.
द्रोणः प्रजापतिः श्रेष्ठा धरा तस्य प्रिया सती । पुत्रं च तपसा लेभे परमात्मानमीश्वरम्
Droṇa, the foremost Prajāpati, and Dhara, his beloved wife, obtained a son through austerity, the supreme soul, the lord.
द्रोणो नन्दो वैश्यराजो यशोदा सा धरा सती । वृषभानसुता राधा सुदाम्नः शापकारणात्
Droṇa became Nanda, king of the Vaiśyas; Yaśodā was Dhara, the virtuous wife. Rādhā, daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, was Sudāmā's due to a curse.
त्रिंशत्कोटिं च गोपीनां गृहीत्वा भर्तुराज्ञया । पुण्यं च भारतं क्षेत्रं गोलोकादाजगामसा
Taking thirty crore gopīs by the husband's command, she came from Goloka to the sacred land of Bhārata.
ताभिः सार्ध स रेमे च स्वपत्नीभिर्मुदाऽन्वितः । पाणिं जग्राह राधायाः स्वयं ब्रह्मा पुरोहितः
With them, he enjoyed together with his own wives, filled with joy; he took Rādhā's hand, with Brahmā himself as priest.
गोपकोटिश्च गोलोकादाजगाम् मृदाऽन्विता । तेजसा हरितुल्यास्ते पार्षदप्रवरा हरेः
A crore of cowherds came from Goloka, accompanied by earth; equal in brilliance to Hari, they were the foremost attendants of Hari.
गोरक्षणं हरेरेव गोपवेषस्य चाऽऽत्मनः । गोपानां शिशुरक्षार्थं मायेशस्यापि मायया
The protection of cows belongs to Hari himself, who took the form of a cowherd; for the sake of protecting the children of the cowherds, even Māyeśa used his own illusion.
पूतना बलिकन्या च भगिनी च तवासुर । दृष्ट्वा च वामनं विन्ध्या चकार पुत्रमानसम्
Pūtanā, daughter of Bali, and your sister, O asura, seeing Vāmana, in Vindhya, conceived the thought of a son.
एवंभूतो यदि मम पुत्रो भवति सांप्रतम् । स्तनं ददामि तनयं कृत्वा वक्षसि सुन्दरम्
If such a son becomes mine now, I will give him my breast, making the child beautiful upon my chest.
तस्याःपूर्णं मानसं च चकार भगवान्प्रभुः । स्तनं दत्त्वा च गोलोकं ययौ सा रत्नयानतः
The Lord fulfilled her mind's desire; after giving her his breast, she went to Goloka, honored with a jeweled vehicle.
कुब्जा सा भगिनी पूर्वं रावणस्य दुरात्मनः । श्रीरामं चकमे कामान्नाम्ना शूर्पणखा सती
That hunchbacked woman was formerly the sister of Rāvaṇa, the wicked; out of desire, she sought Śrī Rāma, named Śūrpaṇakhā, the virtuous.
नासां चिच्छेद तस्याश्च लक्ष्मणो धार्मिकेश्वरः । तपसा च वरं लेभे ब्रह्मणः प्रियमीश्वरम्
Lakṣmaṇa, the lord of dharma, cut off her nose; through austerity, she obtained a boon, the beloved Lord from Brahmā.
तेन पुण्येन तंलब्ध्वा गोलोकं सा जगाम ह । गोपी बभूव गोलोके कृष्णस्याऽऽलिङ्गनेन च
By that merit, having attained Goloka, she went there; she became a gopī in Goloka, through Kṛṣṇa's embrace.
नरको हरिवध्यश्च स्वपूर्वप्राक्तनेन च । पाणिं जग्राह कन्यानां साक्षिणौ शशिभास्करौ
By the force of their previous actions, Naraka and Harivadhya took the hands of maidens in marriage, with the Moon and Sun as witnesses.
भीष्मकन्या महालक्ष्मीः शीकृष्णस्य प्रिया सती । वैकुण्ठादागता साध्वी ब्रह्मणोऽनृमतेन च
Bhīṣmaka's daughter, Mahālakṣmī, the beloved and faithful wife of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, descended from Vaikuṇṭha, pure and true, by the will of Brahmā.
सत्राजितस्य कन्या सा सत्यभामा वसुंधर । ददौ कृष्णाय राजा स तं मणिं यौतुकेन च
Satrājita's daughter, Satyabhāmā, the earth-goddess, was given by the king to Kṛṣṇa, along with that jewel as her bridal gift.
भुवो भारावतरणहेतुना गमनं हरेः । संजहार भुवो भारं कुरुपाण्डवयुद्धतः
For the purpose of relieving the burden of the earth, Hari descended; he removed the earth's weight through the war between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas.
शिशुपालो दन्तवक्त्रो जयो विजय एव च । द्वारिणौ द्वारषट्के च वैकुण्ठे श्रीहरेरपि
Śiśupāla, Dantavakra, Jaya, and Vijaya—these two were the gatekeepers among the six at the gates of Vaikuṇṭha, the abode of Śrī Hari.
कुमारशापात्पतितौ प्राप्य जन्मत्रयं ध्रुवम् । हिरण्यकशिपुश्चैव तवैव पूर्वपूरुषः
Fallen by the curse of Kumāra, they certainly obtained three births; Hiraṇyakaśipu was your own former ancestor.
तस्य भ्राता हिरण्याक्षस्तेनैव वरुणो जितः । हरिर्नृसिंहरूपेण तं जघानावलीलया
His brother Hiraṇyākṣa, who conquered Varuṇa, was slain by Hari in the form of Narasiṃha, playfully.
सूकरेण हतोऽन्यश्च पूर्वजन्मकथां शृणु । द्वितीये जन्मनि पुरा रावणः कुम्भकर्णकः
Another was killed by the Boar incarnation; listen to the story of their previous births: in their second birth, they were Rāvaṇa and Kumbhakarṇa.
