रथमारोहयामास निद्वितं बालकं मुदा । सा मनोयायिनी भद्रा गृहीत्वा बालकं मुने
She placed the sleeping boy joyfully on the chariot; Bhadrā, who could travel by mind, took the boy, O sage.
मुहूर्ताच्छोणितपुरं कृत्वा शङ्खध्वनिं ययौ । अथाऽऽश्रमाभ्यन्तरे च रुरुदुः सर्वयोषितः
In a moment, making the conch sound, she went to Śoṇitapura; then, within the hermitage, all the women wept.
अहो बाणहरो वत्सः क्वगतः प्राणवल्लभः । कृष्णस्ताश्च समाश्वास्य सर्वज्ञः सर्वतत्त्ववित्
‘Oh, where has Bāṇa’s dear son gone, the beloved of our lives?’ Kṛṣṇa, all-knowing and knower of all truths, comforted them.
साम्बकामबलैः सार्ध कृष्णाः सात्यकिना तथा । गृहीत्वा गानुडं वीरं रथमारुह्य सत्वरः
Together with Sāmba, Kāmabalā, and also Sātyaki, Kṛṣṇa quickly mounted the chariot, taking the heroic Gāṇuḍa.
सुदर्शनं पाञ्चजन्यं पद्मं कौमोदकीं गदाम् । पश्चाद्यास्यतिदेवेशो नगरं शोणितं तथा
The lord of the gods will later arrive, bearing Sudarshana, Panchajanya, Padma, Kaumodaki, and the mace, at the city of Shonita.
सगणैःशंकेरणैव पार्वत्या परिरक्षितम् । अथ सा योगिनी धन्या पुण्या मान्या च योषिताम्
With his attendants, Shankara himself, protected by Parvati, then that yogini, blessed, virtuous, and honored among women,
शिष्या दुर्वाससः शान्ता सिद्धयोगेन सिद्धिदा । बारकं बोधयामास रुदन्तं मातरं स्मरन्
Shanta, the disciple of Durvasa, bestowing perfection through accomplished yoga, awakened Baraka, who was weeping, remembering his mother.
स्नापयित्वा ददौ तस्मै माल्यचन्दनभूषणम् । कृत्वा सुवेषं बालस्य कन्यान्तः पुरमीप्सितम्
After bathing him, she gave him garlands, sandalwood, and ornaments; adorning the boy beautifully, she led him to the inner chamber desired by the maiden.
चक्रे प्रवेशं योगेन रक्षकैश्चापि रक्षितम् । तामूषां निद्रितां दृष्ट्वा निराहारां कृशोदरीम्
She enabled his entry by yoga, guarded by protectors; seeing Ushā asleep, fasting, with a slender waist,
शीघ्रं च बोधयामास सखीभिः परिरक्षिताम् । ऊषां कृत्वा च सुस्नातां वस्त्रभूषणभूषिताम्
She quickly awakened Ushā, who was protected by her companions; making Ushā bathe well, and adorning her with garments and ornaments,
वस्त्रैर्माल्यैश्चन्दनैश्च सिन्दूरपत्रकैः शुभैः । द्वयोः संभाषणं तत्र माहेन्द्रे च शुभक्षणे
With garments, garlands, sandalwood, and auspicious vermilion leaves, there, at an auspicious moment, the conversation between the two took place.
कारयामास गुप्त्या च सखीनां संमतेन च । पतिव्रता पतिं दृष्ट्वा सा रेमे विगतज्वरा
She arranged their meeting in secret, with the approval of the companions; the devoted wife, seeing her husband, rejoiced, free from distress.
गान्धर्वेण विवाहेन तामुवाह स्मरात्मजः । रतिर्बभूव सुचिरमुभयोः सुखकारणम्
By a Gandharva marriage, the son of Smara took her as his wife; their union brought lasting pleasure to both.
दिवानिशं न बुबुधे स्मरपुत्रः स्मरातुरः । ऊषा कामातुरा प्रौढा नवोढा नवसंगमात्
Day and night, the son of Smara, overwhelmed by love, was unaware; Ushā, mature and newly wed, was passionate from their fresh union.
मूर्च्छां संप्राप पुंसश्च स्पर्शमात्रेण कामुकी । एवं नित्यं च रहसि संगमः सुमनोहरः बभूव सुचिरं विप्र राजा शुश्राव रक्षकात्
She became faint from merely his touch, being desirous; thus, their delightful union in secret continued for a long time, O Brahmin, and the king heard from the guards.
इति श्रीब्रह्मo महाo श्रीकृष्णजन्मखo उत्तo नारदानाo ऊषानिरुद्धयोः संगमे चतुर्दशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and fourteenth chapter of the glorious Brahma Purana, concerning the union of Ushā and Aniruddha, as narrated by Narada.
अथ पञ्चदशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः नारायण उवाच अथ भीता रक्षकास्ते समूतुर्बाणमीश्वरम् । स्कन्दं गणेशं दुर्गां च दण्डवत्प्रणिपत्य च
Now begins the one hundred and fifteenth chapter. Narayana said: Then the frightened guards gathered before Bāṇa, the lord; bowing to Skanda, Ganesha, and Durga,
रक्षका ऊचुः अहो दुष्टश्च कालोऽयमतीव दुरतिक्रमः । स्वतन्त्रा बालिका प्रौढा पतिमिच्छति सांप्रतम्
The guards said: Alas, this wicked time is extremely hard to overcome; the maiden, now mature, desires a husband of her own will.
असङ्गसंगमं नाथ साधूनां दुःखकारणम् । संसर्गजा गुणा दोषा भवन्ति सततं नृणाम्
Unattached union, O lord, is the cause of sorrow for the virtuous; from association, virtues and faults constantly arise among people.
चित्रलेखा स्वयं दूती समानीय परं वरम् । रणशूरं महावीरं नृपेन्द्रं च महारथम्
Chitralekha herself, as messenger, brought the excellent groom—a warrior, a great hero, a king, and a mighty charioteer.
युवानं व्याधिहीनं च कन्दर्पादपि सुन्दरम् । संभोगं कारयामास बुबुधे न दिवानिशम्
Young, free from disease, more handsome than even Kama, she arranged their union; he was unaware day and night.
सांप्रतं तव कन्या साऽप्यूषागर्भवती सती । कुलजा कुलयोश्चैव तप्ताङ्गारस्वरूपिणी
Now your daughter, Ushā, is pregnant, O lord; born of noble lineage, she is like burning embers.
दौहित्रो वाऽपि दौहित्री बभुव सांप्रतं तव। कन्यां पश्य महाप्रौढां नगरीं नागरान्विताम्
Your granddaughter has now become a mature maiden; behold her, splendid and adorned with the city and its citizens.
नखविक्षतसर्वाङ्गीं वराधीनां च चञ्चलाम् । पुंसश्च सङ्गिरीं शश्वद्रहस्ये रतिसङ्गिनीम्
Her whole body is marked by scratches from nails; she is restless, dependent on her chosen suitor, and always eager for secret union with a man.
सस्मितां सकटाक्षां च च़ञ्चलेक्षणवीक्षताम् । एवं श्रुत्वा लज्जितश्च बाणस्तत्र चुकोप ह
She smiles, casts sidelong glances, and looks with flickering eyes; hearing this, Bāṇa was ashamed and became angry there.
युद्धाय च मतिं चक्रे वारितः शभुना भृशम् । वारितश्च गणेशेन स्कन्देन शिवया तथा
He resolved to fight, but was firmly restrained by Śambhu; he was also stopped by Gaṇeśa, Skanda, and Śivā.
भैरव्या भद्रकाल्या च योगिनीभिश्च संततम् । अष्टभिर्भैरवैश्चैव रुद्रैरेकादशात्मकैः
He was continually restrained by Bhairavī, Bhadrakālī, the Yoginīs, the eight Bhairavas, and the eleven Rudras.
भूतैः प्रेतैश्च कूष्माण्डैर्वेतालैर्ब्रह्मराक्षसैः । योसीन्द्रैरपि सिद्धेन्द्रै रुद्रैश्चण्डादिभिस्तथा
He was checked by spirits, ghosts, Kūṣmāṇḍas, Vetālas, Brahmarākṣasas, the lords of yogis and siddhas, and fierce Rudras like Caṇḍa.
कोटर्या प्रामदेव्या च यथा मात्रा हिताय च । उवाच शंकरो बाणं मूढं पण्डितमानिनम् हितं सत्यं नीतिशास्त्रं परिणामसुखावहम्
By Koṭarā, Prāmadevī, and his mother for his welfare; Śaṃkara spoke to Bāṇa, who was deluded yet considered himself wise, words of benefit, truth, and the ethical science that brings lasting happiness.
महादेव उवाच शृणु बाण प्रवक्ष्यामि कथामेतां पुरातनीम् । भुवो भारावतरणे भारते स्वयमीश्वरः
Mahādeva said: Listen, Bāṇa, I will tell you this ancient story; when the burden of the earth was to be relieved, the Lord Himself appeared in Bhārata.
