Thus ends the one hundred thirteenth chapter, named 'The Worship of Gaṇeśa', in the great Brahma Purāṇa, concerning the birth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, narrated by Nārada.
Now begins the one hundred fourteenth chapter. Nārāyaṇa said: Kṛṣṇa's son Pradyumna, mighty and heroic, and his son Aniruddha, who is indeed a portion of the Creator.
Once, Aniruddha, endowed with youthful vigor, slept alone on a bed adorned with flowers and sandalwood.
In a dream, he saw a young woman in a flourishing garden of Puṣṇa, on a fragrant flower-bed, smeared with gentle sandalwood.
He saw her lying there, beautiful and smiling, radiant with youthful charm, adorned with ornaments made of priceless gems.
She was resplendent with lovely armlets, bangles, conch bracelets, and shone with a pair of jeweled earrings on her cheeks.
She wore exceedingly fine garments, adorned with tinkling anklets, her lips red as ripe bimba fruit, and her eyes like autumn lotuses.
Her face, radiant as an autumn lotus, surpassed the brightness of a crore moons; her enchanting teeth were set like rows of pearls.
Her hair, arranged in three folds, was adorned with a garland of mālatī flowers; she was anointed with musk, saffron, lac, smooth sandalwood, and kohl.
Her cheeks shone, decorated with leaf patterns; she was adorned with a sindūra dot shaped like a pomegranate flower.
Her thighs shone, surpassing the stalks of banana trees; her pair of breasts were high and round, beautifully prominent.
Her hips were heavy and graceful, afflicted by the arrows of Kāma; she was passionate and lovely, gazing with sidelong glances.
Her lotus feet, adorned with saffron and red unguents, shone brilliantly; her beauty was revealed by a garment stirred by the wind, making her secret places radiant.
Seeing her, the son of Kāma, his mind agitated by desire, spoke sweet and charming words to that lovely, passion-intoxicated, and delicate woman.
She, radiant as a beautiful campaka blossom, thrilled by desire, was exceedingly mature, newly wed, and restlessly eager for love's play.
Aniruddha said: Who are you, goddess? Are you a celestial maiden, or do you dwell in the forest of desire? Whose wife or daughter are you, O beautiful one, and whom do you desire?
Your beauty is unrivaled in the three worlds, enchanting the minds of sages; tell me, how is it that you do not fear, being here alone with me?
I am now the grandson of the Lord of the Three Worlds, the son of Kāma; O lovely one, I am Aniruddha, struck by fresh youth.
I am charming and passionate, an expert in the science of love, and I am myself the lord who fulfills the complete desires of passionate women.
Join yourself to me, O graceful one, for I am well-dressed, of good character, a hero in love, skilled in the pleasures of love, and dear to the taste of love.
I am the son of Rati, the very essence of love, intoxicated, a connoisseur, dear one, young and free from disease; a passionate woman desires a passionate man.
The clever woman seeks a clever man out of desire; the union of the clever with the clever is truly virtuous.
Covering her face and eyes, bashful at the prospect of a new union, she glanced at him from the corner of her eyes and spoke.
The woman said: You are a passionate man, the son of Kāma, now agitated by desire; if you are truly fit for a passionate woman, why is desire not fulfilled?
You are the grandson of the Lord of the Three Worlds, honored by your own merit; being worthy yourself and the son of a worthy one, why have you not married?
A wedded wife is the partner in sacrifice, virtuous, devoted, ever steadfast, always to be cherished, increasing, and ever a companion.
She is to be won by gifts of affection and fear, a secret wife, unwavering, taken for a purpose, not by rule, and outside the Vedas.
Such a union is a step toward hell, brings disgrace in this world and the next; the virtuous do not delight in it, especially if one is a descendant of the Vaiṣṇavas.
If one has erred before but has turned away and joined the company of the good, such restraint is the highest fruit for beings.
Even if one who has sinned is purified by penance and restraint, he is still mocked in the world, just as an elephant's bath is in vain.
