He enjoyed himself with Rāma in the palace of Indra, adorned with jewels; he gave him a splendid hermitage, crafted from the essence of jewels.
Once, that foremost sage, reflecting in his mind, saw someone lying on a beautiful couch, artfully made, fashioned from jewels.
Having listened to the Purāṇa with faith somewhere, or being engaged in a great festival, or in some auspicious courtyard,
Having eaten betel leaves, given with devotion and truthfulness, or served somewhere on a couch by Rukmiṇī with yak-tail fans,
Or lying down somewhere, joyfully, with his feet served by Kālindī; everywhere, the Lord spoke equally with the sage.
The brāhmaṇa was filled with wonder, seeing that most marvelous thing; he praised the Lord of the world again in Rukmiṇī’s palace, and also as he dwelt beautifully in Sudharmā, amidst the assembly of the virtuous.
Durvāsā said: Victory, victory to the Lord of the worlds, conqueror of all, Janārdana, the soul of all, Lord of all, ancient seed, without qualities, without desire.
Unattached, stainless, formless, embodiment of compassion for devotees, true, of eternal form, without fixed form, ever-new.
Worshipped by Brahmā, Śiva, Śeṣa, and Kubera; whose lotus feet are served by Padmā; whose light is indescribable; whose qualities and form are unknown to the Vedas; honored by the vast cosmos; Supreme Self, I bow to you.
Having spoken thus, and with the mind’s approval of Hari, the best of brāhmaṇas bowed and remained there before Hari.
The Lord of the world spoke to him, words beneficial, true, ancient, and knowledge prescribed by the Vedas, esteemed by all the virtuous.
Śrī Bhagavān said: Do not fear, brāhmaṇa; you are a portion of Śiva. Do you not know this by knowledge? I am the source of all; from me everything proceeds.
I am the Self of all; all beings exist only through me. When the vital bodies enter into me, all powers return.
Even in birth, I alone am one, though manifest separately; whoever enjoys, finds satisfaction, never do others at any time.
Among all individual souls and living beings, I am the fullest, most complete, in Goloka, in the circle of the rāsa dance.
Due to Śrīdāma’s curse, Rādhā is now unable to see me; all are present in partial forms, and by my portion and their portions.
In Rukmiṇī’s palace is a portion, in other palaces are powers; even of mine, somewhere a portion, somewhere a fragment of a fragment.
Fragments of fragments are found somewhere, in images and in embodied beings; having spoken thus, the Lord of the worlds entered the inner house, and Durvāsā, leaving his beloved, went to perform austerity for Śrī Hari.
Thus ends the one hundred and twelfth chapter of the great Brahma Purāṇa, concerning the birth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the conversation between Nārada and the sage Kṛṣṇa.
Now begins the one hundred and thirteenth chapter. Nārāyaṇa said: Durvāsā, together with his disciples, having left the city of Dvārakā, went to Kailāsa with devotion to see Śaṃkara, the Lord.
The sage went to Kailāsa and bowed to Śiva and Śivā; pure and with his disciples, he praised them with supreme devotion.
He related everything—the entire account concerning Śrī Hari, the truth of his own austerities, and the state of his own detachment and mind.
Hearing the sage’s words, Pārvatī, the virtuous one, smiled and spoke to him, true and beneficial words, in the presence of Śaṃkara.
Pārvatī said: You do not know the true essence of dharma, though you consider yourself righteous; O sage, you abandon your childless wife and go to practice austerity.
Abandoning a childless, noble-born, devoted wife, one may become a renunciant, a celibate, or an ascetic.
Whether for trade, or journeying far for a long time, or for pilgrimage, or for austerity, or to end the cycle of birth for the sake of liberation—
He does not attain liberation; surely, there is a fall from dharma, and by the curse of his wife, he goes to hell hereafter.
And even here, there is loss of fame—so says the lotus-born one. Go to Dvārakā, O brāhmaṇa, and now protect your own dharma.
Righteously care for Ekānaṃśā and my portion; the lotus feet, attained by the dust of the feet, are exceedingly rare.
This has been constantly sung by Śaṃbhu and by the great sages like Sanaka; abandon even the wish-fulfilling tree for Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Self.
