He saw Rukmiṇī, the goddess, in the prime of youth, reclining with joy and smiling, upon a couch of jewels.
She was not yet mature, newly married, bashful at their first union, adorned with ornaments made of priceless gems.
Her beautiful, abundant hair was decorated with garlands of jasmine; seeing Kṛṣṇa, the daughter of Bhīṣmaka suddenly bowed to him.
Having attained her, the Lord of the universe rested upon the jeweled bed; at an auspicious moment, with the auspicious Rāma, he enjoyed.
Through the enjoyment of happiness, she fainted with delight; from her was born Kāma, who had been reduced to ashes by Śaṃbhu.
He, having slain Śambara, there attained union with the virtuous one; Rati, named Māyāvatī, by sign, was also the wife of the god.
Narada said: By what means did Kama seize Shambara the demon? O most fortunate one, tell me the auspicious story in detail.

With great care, she raised the boy; and Sarasvati, in a secluded place, spoke to her in private.
Sarasvati said: Formerly, your husband was reduced to ashes in the fire of Shiva's wrath; and this son of Rukmini has been brought here by the demon.
By his power of illusion, the lord of illusion brought the son from Rukmini's birthing chamber and gave him to you; this is your husband, not your own child.
The blessed Mother of the world told Kama: This is your wife, Rati; enjoy with Rama.
You are indeed the son of Rukmini, not the Manmatha of another demon; like a female curlew, she constantly wept, separated from you.
Having spoken thus, Vani, the consort of Brahma, went to the abode of Brahma; and the handsome one always enjoyed in seclusion with Rama.

He saw Rati, smiling and lying upon the middle of Kama's chest, faint with passion and eager for union.
Seeing this, the demon became enraged, seized an excellent sword, and, sword in hand, spoke to Kama and to Rati, the virtuous one.
Shambara said: Shame on you, great libertine, fool who thinks himself wise, foremost among great sinners, reckless one who goes to another's wife!
Shame on you, wanton woman, intoxicated, lustful, bereft of sense! Taking my son, you secretly indulge in love, O unfaithful one!
Having spoken thus, as he raised the sword to kill her, Manmatha incited the demon, who sought to slay Rati.
O Brahman, from a distance he fell down, unconscious, his limbs afflicted; regaining consciousness, he blazed with anger.
He seized the trident given by Shiva, with great force—a trident shining like a hundred suns, equal to the fire of dissolution, O sage.
Seeing this, the gods—Brahma, Ishvara, and Shesha—arrived; and Vayu carefully spoke into Kama's ear.
Recall, recall the great Māyā, Durgā, destroyer of swift misfortune; hearing the words of the wind, Manmatha remembered Durgā.
A trident appeared upon her body, a beautiful and enchanting garland; with the Brahmāstra, Manmatha joyfully slew that demon.
Taking Rati, he departed by chariot to the city of Dvārakā; all the gods went, having praised Pārvatī herself.
Rukmiṇī performed auspicious rites and received Rati, her son; Hari arranged a great festival and a supreme blessing.

He fed the Brāhmaṇas and worshipped Pārvatī; then Kṛṣṇa, in due order, on the day prescribed by the Vedas for auspicious rites—
He performed the marriage of seven women: Kālindī, Satyabhāmā, Satyā, Rāgnijitī, the virtuous one—
