Rukmi, Shishupala, the mighty Dantavakra, and Shalva, the foremost of illusionists and expert in the science of war,
Armed with various weapons and missiles, standing on their chariots eager for battle, upon seeing Krishna's army, the prince became enraged.
He spoke harsh words, sharp to the ear and difficult to endure, mocking the great sages, the gods, and the foremost among ascetics.
Rukmi said: 'Ah, this is the work of time; who can oppose fate? What shall I say in the assembly of the lords of the gods?'
To seize Rukmini, the maiden fit for the gods and enchanting, the cowherd, protector of Nanda's cattle, comes with gods and sages.
He is openly the paramour of the cowherd women, eats food left by cowherds, and has no wealth at birth, nor food or marriage gifts.
Is he the son of a king, or the son of a sage? Vasudeva is a Kshatriya, yet he eats in a Vaishya's house.
In his childhood, this wicked one committed the murder of a woman; Kubja died from union with him, and the washerman died because of his garment.
One who wickedly kills a king certainly incurs the sin of killing a Brahmin; yet in Mathura, the righteous Kamsa was immediately slain.
Shalva said: That which was spoken by Rukmini—O gods, is it false? And who is this husband of Rukmini, the cowherd of Nanda?
Shishupala said: Ah, what wonder is this upon earth, O gods, and Brahma and the others as well! The foremost sages, sons of Brahma, have come by the command of a mortal.
Dantavakra said: The Brahmins are always greedy, and the gods are devoted to their devotees; how did the sons of Brahma come at the command of Nanda's son?
Hearing their words, the enemy of the gods became angry, and so did the assembly of sages and kings, as well as those led by the wielder of the plough.
Thus ends the one hundred and sixth chapter, entitled 'The Marriage of Rukmini,' in the great Brahmavaivarta Purana, in the section concerning the birth of Sri Krishna, as narrated by Narada.
Now, the one hundred and seventh chapter. Narayana said: Then Baladeva, mighty in strength and filled with wrath, broke the chariot of Rukmi with his plough, O foremost of sages.
Having slain the horses and the charioteer, the lord of the earth approached the sinful Rukmi, who had fallen to the ground, intending to kill him.
Rukmi, with playful ease, blocked him with a shower of arrows, and prepared the serpent-missile to bind the lord with the plough.
But the lord of the plough himself neutralized the serpent-missile with the Garuda-missile; then, enraged, Rukmi seized the supreme Pashupata weapon, O sage.
Rukmi, shining like a hundred suns, was rendered inert by the Jambhana weapon of the wielder of the plough, making his assault on the enemy fruitless.
Rukmi, standing on the ground like a pillar, was put to sleep by the Nidra weapon; seeing him thus asleep, Shalva released a hundred arrows at him.
He caused a rain of stones, a rain of rocks, a rain of water, a rain of blazing coals, and a rain of arrows.
But the wielder of the plough repelled all these with his strength and weapons, and with his plough, ground Shalva's chariot to dust in the midst of battle.
With playful ease, he struck down the horses and charioteer as well; as Baladeva, enraged, was about to slay him, a bodiless voice spoke.
Leave Shalva, for Krishna is destined to kill him; what merit is there for you in battle against one whose head, like a sesame seed in a winnowing basket, bears the universe?
Hearing this, Baladeva struck his head with the plough, reducing it to dust; afflicted, he fell on the field of battle.
Seeing the fall of Shalva, the mighty Shishupala unleashed a shower of arrows, like a rainstorm upon the earth.
Halī pulverized his chariot with his plough, and with playful ease blocked his arrows with the crescent-shaped tip.
Śaṃkara himself intervened to prevent him from being killed, saying, 'O Bala, abandon the foremost of attendants who is not to be slain by Kṛṣṇa.'
With his plough, he broke the tooth of Dantavaktra; and after a fierce battle, they all abandoned him.
Seeing Bala's might, all the warriors fled; all the wedding guests entered Kuṇḍina.
