दशलक्षं तुरङ्गाणां रथानां लक्षमेव च । रत्नालंकारयुक्तानां दासीनां चापि लक्षकम्
He gave ten lakhs of horses, and one lakh of chariots, all adorned with precious jewels, and also one lakh of maidservants.
मणिलक्षं रत्नलक्षं स्वर्णकोटिं च सादरम् । वह्निशुद्धांशुकं रम्यं मुक्तामाणिक्यहीरकम्
He respectfully gave a lakh of gems, a lakh of jewels, ten million pieces of gold, beautiful garments purified by fire, and pearls, rubies, and diamonds.
दत्तवा कन्यां च राजेन्दो बलाय बलशालिने । रत्नेन्द्रसारयानेन तैः सार्ध कुण्डिनं ययौ
The king gave his daughter to the mighty Balarama, and with those treasures and the best of jewel-encrusted vehicles, he went to Kundina together with them.
अथान्तरे च निर्बन्धे साङ्गे मङ्गलकर्मणि । रेवतीं वेशयामास योषितां कमलाकलाम्
Then, during the auspicious ceremony with all its rites, he seated Revati, the most exquisite among women, like a ray of Lakshmi.
देवकी रोहिणी चैव यशोदा नन्दगेहिनी । अदितिश्च दितिः शान्तिर्जयं कृत्वा च मन्दिरम्
Devaki, Rohini, Yashoda, the wife of Nanda, Aditi, Diti, and Shanti, after performing the victory rites, entered the house.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास ददौ तेभ्यो धनं मुदा । मङ्गलं कारयामास वसुदेवस्य वल्लभा
They fed the Brahmins and gladly gave them wealth; Vasudeva's beloved arranged the auspicious ceremonies.
अथ देवाश्च मुनयो राजेन्द्रः कटकैः सह । संप्रापुर्लीलामात्रेण कुण्डिनं नगरं मुदा
Then the gods, sages, and the king, along with their retinues, arrived joyfully at the city of Kundina in an instant.
ददृशुर्नगरं सर्वे ह्यतीव सुमनोहरम् । सप्तभिःपरिशाभिश्च गभीराभिश्च वेष्टितम्
They all beheld the city, exceedingly enchanting, surrounded by seven deep moats.
प्राकारैः सप्तभिर्युक्तं द्वाराणां शतकैस्तथा । नानारत्नैश्च मणिभिर्निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा
It was fortified with seven ramparts and a hundred gates, constructed by Vishvakarma with various jewels and gems.
नगरस्य बहिर्द्वारं ददृशुर्वरयात्रिणः । रक्षितं रक्षकैः सार्ध चतुर्भिश्च महारथैः
The wedding party saw the outer gate of the city, guarded by protectors and four great chariot-warriors.
रुक्मिश्च शिशुपालश्च दन्तवक्त्रो महाबली । शाल्वो मायाविनां श्रेष्ठो युद्धशास्त्रविशारदः
Rukmi, Shishupala, the mighty Dantavakra, and Shalva, the foremost of illusionists and expert in the science of war,
नानाशास्रत्रैस्तथाऽश्त्रैश्च रथस्थश्च रणोन्मुखः । विलोक्य कृष्णसैन्यं च चुकोप नृपनन्दनः
Armed with various weapons and missiles, standing on their chariots eager for battle, upon seeing Krishna's army, the prince became enraged.
उवाच निष्ठुरं वाक्यं श्रुतितीक्ष्मं सुदुष्करम् । उपहास्य मुनीन्द्रांश्च देवांश्च मुनिपुंगवान्
He spoke harsh words, sharp to the ear and difficult to endure, mocking the great sages, the gods, and the foremost among ascetics.
रुक्मिरुवाच अहो कालकृतं कर्म दैवं च केन वार्यते । किंवाऽहं कथयिष्यामि देवेन्द्राणां च संसदि
Rukmi said: 'Ah, this is the work of time; who can oppose fate? What shall I say in the assembly of the lords of the gods?'
ग्रहीतुं रुक्मिणीं कन्यां देवयोग्यां मनोहराम् । आयाति देवैर्मुनिभिर्नन्दस्य पशुरक्षकः
To seize Rukmini, the maiden fit for the gods and enchanting, the cowherd, protector of Nanda's cattle, comes with gods and sages.
साक्षाज्जारश्च गोपीनां गोपोच्छिष्टान्नभोजनः । जातेश्च निर्मयो नास्ति भक्ष्यमैथुनयोस्तथा
He is openly the paramour of the cowherd women, eats food left by cowherds, and has no wealth at birth, nor food or marriage gifts.
किं नु राजेन्द्रपुत्रश्च किं नु वा मुनिपुत्रकः । वसुदेवः क्षत्रियश्च भक्षणं वैश्यमन्दिरे
Is he the son of a king, or the son of a sage? Vasudeva is a Kshatriya, yet he eats in a Vaishya's house.
शिशुकाले च स्त्रीहत्या कृताऽनेन दुरात्मना । कुब्जा मृता च संभोगाद्वाससा रजको मृतः
In his childhood, this wicked one committed the murder of a woman; Kubja died from union with him, and the washerman died because of his garment.
राजेन्द्रस्य वधे दुष्टो ब्रह्महत्यां लभेद्ध्रुवम् । मथुरायां च धर्मिष्ठः सद्यः कंसो निपातितः
One who wickedly kills a king certainly incurs the sin of killing a Brahmin; yet in Mathura, the righteous Kamsa was immediately slain.
शाल्व उवाच यदुक्तं रुक्मिणा देवाः किमसत्यं च तत्र वै । को वाऽयं रुक्मिणीभर्ता नन्दस्य पशुरक्षकः
Shalva said: That which was spoken by Rukmini—O gods, is it false? And who is this husband of Rukmini, the cowherd of Nanda?
शिशुपाल उवाच अहो भुवि किमाश्चर्य देवा ब्रह्मादयस्तथा । मुनीन्द्रा ब्रह्मणः पुत्राश्चाऽऽययुर्मानवाज्ञया
Shishupala said: Ah, what wonder is this upon earth, O gods, and Brahma and the others as well! The foremost sages, sons of Brahma, have come by the command of a mortal.
दन्तवक्त्र उवाच संततं ब्राह्मणा लुब्धा देवाश्च भक्तवत्सलाः । आययुर्ब्रह्मपुत्राश्च नन्दपुत्राज्ञया कथम्
Dantavakra said: The Brahmins are always greedy, and the gods are devoted to their devotees; how did the sons of Brahma come at the command of Nanda's son?
तेषां च वचनं श्रुत्वा चुकोप देवसंधकः । मुनिराजेन्द्रसंघश्च लाङ्गलीत्यादयस्तथा
Hearing their words, the enemy of the gods became angry, and so did the assembly of sages and kings, as well as those led by the wielder of the plough.
इति श्रीब्रह्मo महाo शीकृष्णजन्मखo उत्तo नारदनाo रुक्मिण्युद्वाहे षडधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and sixth chapter, entitled 'The Marriage of Rukmini,' in the great Brahmavaivarta Purana, in the section concerning the birth of Sri Krishna, as narrated by Narada.
अथ सप्ताधिकशततमोऽध्यायः नारायण उवाच अथ कोपपीतश्च बलदेवो महाबलः । हलेन रुक्मियानं च बभञ्ज मुनिपुंगव
Now, the one hundred and seventh chapter. Narayana said: Then Baladeva, mighty in strength and filled with wrath, broke the chariot of Rukmi with his plough, O foremost of sages.
घोटकान्सारथिं चैव निहत्य जगतीपतिः । भुमिष्ठं चापि पापिष्ठं रुक्मिं हन्तुं जगाम सः
Having slain the horses and the charioteer, the lord of the earth approached the sinful Rukmi, who had fallen to the ground, intending to kill him.
रुक्मी च शरजालेन वारयामास लीलया । नागास्त्रं योजयामास बद्धुं हलिनमीश्वरम्
Rukmi, with playful ease, blocked him with a shower of arrows, and prepared the serpent-missile to bind the lord with the plough.
नागास्त्रं गारुडेनैव संजहार हली स्वयम् । जग्राह कोपाद्रुक्मी च परं पाशुपतं मुने
But the lord of the plough himself neutralized the serpent-missile with the Garuda-missile; then, enraged, Rukmi seized the supreme Pashupata weapon, O sage.
अव्यर्थं वैरिमर्द च शतसूर्यसमप्रभम् । अभितो हलिना रुक्मी जृम्भणास्त्रेण जृम्भितः
Rukmi, shining like a hundred suns, was rendered inert by the Jambhana weapon of the wielder of the plough, making his assault on the enemy fruitless.
भूमिष्ठः स्थाणुमद्रुक्मी निद्रास्त्रेणैव निद्रितः । शाल्वस्तं निद्रितं दृष्ट्वा शतबाणान्मुमोच तम्
Rukmi, standing on the ground like a pillar, was put to sleep by the Nidra weapon; seeing him thus asleep, Shalva released a hundred arrows at him.
