तस्मै वस्त्रयुगं दत्तं वह्निशुद्धं मनोहरम् । वरुणेन पुरा दत्तं कृष्णाय परमात्मने
To him was given a pair of garments, purified by fire and enchanting, which had formerly been given by Varuna to Krishna, the Supreme Self.
माल्यं च पारिजातानां चन्दनं रत्नभूषणम् । रत्नच्छत्रं ददौ तस्मै बलदेवो महाबलः
A garland of Parijata flowers, sandalwood, jeweled ornaments, and a jeweled umbrella were given to him by the mighty Baladeva.
ब्रह्मा कमण्डलुं चैव शूलं चापि महेश्वरः । पार्वती रत्नमाल्यं च हारं च मालती सती
Brahma gave a water-pot, Maheshvara a trident, Parvati a jeweled garland, and Sati a jasmine necklace.
अन्ये देवाश्च मुनयो राजेन्द्राः सिद्धपुंगवाः । यौतकं च ददौ तस्मै क्रमेण च पृथक्पृथक्
Other gods, sages, lordly kings, and eminent Siddhas each in turn gave him wedding gifts, separately and in order.
वसुदेवो ददौ तस्मै शुभदं श्वेतचामरम् । पवनेन पुरा दत्तं कृष्णाय परमात्मने
Vasudeva gave him an auspicious white fly-whisk, which had formerly been given by the Wind-god to Krishna, the Supreme Self.
नन्दो ददौ च सुरभिं कामधेनुं च पूजिताम् । यशोदा देवकी तस्मै रत्नश्रेष्ठं ददौ मुदा
Nanda gave him Surabhi, the wish-fulfilling cow, duly honored; Yashoda and Devaki joyfully gave him the finest jewel.
सप्तभिः किंकरैश्चापि सैवितः श्वेतचामरैः । दधार च्छत्रमक्रूरो भक्त्या चैवाऽऽज्ञया हरेः
Attended by seven servants with white fly-whisks, Akrura held the umbrella with devotion and by the command of Hari.
रत्नसिहासने रम्ये ददर्श रत्नदर्पणम् । अतीव पुण्यावाप्यं च हरिणां च पुरस्कृतः
Seated on the splendid jeweled throne, he saw a jeweled mirror, exceedingly auspicious and obtained by merit, honored by the deer.
चक्रुः स्तुतिं च भट्टाश्च भिङुका ब्राह्मणास्तथा । ददुः शुभाशिषं तस्मै देवाश्च मुनयस्तथा
The bards, singers, and Brahmins offered praise, and the gods and sages likewise gave him auspicious blessings.
ब्रह्मणेम्यो ददौ राजा रत्नकोटिं च भक्ततः । भट्टभ्यो रत्नशतकं भिक्षुकेम्यस्तथैव च
The king devotedly gave a crore of jewels to the Brahmins, a hundred jewels to the bards, and likewise to the mendicants.
अभिषिच्य नृपेन्द्रं च देवांश्च मुनिपुंगवान् । संपूज्य ब्राह्मणांश्चापि भट्टान्भिक्षुं द्विजं गुरुम्
Having anointed the king, and having honored the gods, the foremost sages, the Brahmins, the priests, the mendicants, the twice-born, and the teachers,
स्वालयं च ययुः सर्वे यादवाश्च मुदाऽन्विताः । ये ये हरेः पार्षदाश्च ते सर्वे स्वालयं ययुः
All the Yadavas, filled with joy, returned to their own homes; and all those who were attendants of Hari also went to their own dwellings.
प्रभाते चाऽऽययुः सर्वे सुधर्मा च सभां हरेः । नमस्कृत्य नृपेन्द्रं च चोषुः सर्वे च संसदि
In the morning, all assembled in the Sudharma hall of Hari; after bowing to the king, they all sat together in the assembly.
इति श्रीब्रह्मo महाo श्रीकृष्णजन्मखo उत्तo नारादनाo द्वारकाप्रवेश उग्रसेनाभिषेको नाम चतुरधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and fourth chapter, entitled 'The Entry into Dvaraka and the Anointing of Ugrasena,' in the great Brahma-vaivarta Purana, in the section on the birth of Sri Krishna, as narrated by Narada.
अथ पञ्चाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः नारायण उवाच अथ वैदर्भराजेन्द्रो महाबलपराक्रम् । विदर्भदेशे पुण्याश्च सत्यशीलश्च भीष्मकः
Now begins the one hundred and fifth chapter. Narayana said: Then, the king of Vidarbha, Bhishmaka, endowed with great strength and valor, righteous and truthful, ruled in the holy land of Vidarbha.
राजा नारायणांशश्च दाता च सर्वसंपदाम् । धर्मिष्ठस्च गरीयांश्च वरिष्ठश्टापि पूजितः
He was a king possessing a portion of Narayana, a giver of all wealth, most righteous, eminent, and honored among the best.
तस्य कन्या महालक्ष्मी रुक्मिणी योषितां वरा । अतीव सुन्दरी रम्या रमा रामासु पूजिता
His daughter was Rukmini, the best among women, Mahalakshmi herself, exceedingly beautiful and charming, revered among the consorts of Rama.
नवयौवनसंपन्ना रत्नाभरणभूषिता । तप्तकाञ्चनवर्णाभा तेजसोज्ज्वलिता सती
She was endowed with fresh youth, adorned with jeweled ornaments, possessing the luster of molten gold, radiant with brilliance, and virtuous.
शुद्धसत्त्वस्वरूपा सा सत्यशीला पतिव्रता । शान्ता दान्ता नितान्ता चाप्यनन्तगुणशालिनी
She was of pure and noble nature, truthful, devoted to her husband, peaceful, self-controlled, exceedingly virtuous, and endowed with countless good qualities.
इन्द्राणी वरुणानी च चन्द्रनारी च रोहिणी । कुबेरपत्नी सूर्यस्त्री स्वाहा शान्ता कलावती
Indrani, Varunani, Chandra's wife Rohini, Kubera's consort, Surya's wife, Svaha, Shanta, and Kalavati—
अन्यासु रमणीयासु श्रेष्ठा च सुमनोहरा । रुक्मिण्या भीष्मकन्यायाः कलां नार्हति षोडशीम्
Among all other beautiful and excellent women, none could equal even a sixteenth part of Rukmini, the daughter of Bhishmaka.
तां दृष्ट्वा राजराजेन्द्रो वालक्रीडारतां पराम् । बालां सुशोभां कुर्वन्तीं यथाऽभ्रेषु विधोः कलाम्
Seeing her, the king of kings beheld his daughter, radiant in her childhood play, shining beautifully like the crescent moon among the clouds.
शरत्पूर्णेन्दुशोभाढ्यां शरत्कमललोचनाम् । विवाहयोग्यां युवतीं लज्जानम्राननां शुभम्
She was endowed with the splendor of the autumn full moon, with eyes like autumn lotuses, a young woman fit for marriage, with a lovely face lowered in modesty.
सहसा चिन्तितो धर्मो धर्मशीलश्च सुव्रतः । सुतां पप्रच्छ पुत्रांश्च ब्राह्मणांश्च पुरोहितान्
Suddenly, the righteous and virtuous king, steadfast in his vows, considered his duty and questioned his sons, his daughter, the Brahmins, and the priests.
कं वृणोमि सुतार्ध च वराहं प्रवरं वरम् । मुनिपुत्रं देवपुत्रं राजेन्द्रसुतमीप्सितम्
Whom shall I choose as a husband for my daughter? A sage's son, a god's son, or a king's son—who is most desirable?
विवाहयोग्या कन्या मे वर्धमाना मनोहरा । शीघ्रं पश्य वरं याग्यं नवयौवनसंस्थितम्
My daughter, now grown and enchanting, is fit for marriage; quickly seek a worthy and youthful bridegroom.
धर्मशीलं सत्यसंधं नारायणपरायणम् । महाकुलप्रसूतं च सर्वत्रैव प्रतिष्ठितम्
He should be righteous, truthful, devoted to Narayana, born in a great family, and renowned everywhere.
करोषि राजपुत्रं चेद्रणशास्त्रविशारदम् । महारथं प्रतापार्हं रणमूर्ध्नि च सुस्थिरम्
If you choose a prince, he should be skilled in the science of warfare, a great chariot-warrior, worthy of glory, and steadfast in the midst of battle.
करोषि देवपुत्रं चेद्देवं गुणयुतं तथा । करोषि मुनिपुत्रं चेच्चतुर्वेदविशारदम्
If you make him the son of a god, then he will be endowed with divine qualities; if you make him the son of a sage, he will be thoroughly learned in the four Vedas.
वावदूकं विचारज्ञं सिद्धान्तेषु नितान्तकम् । नृपेन्द्रवचनं श्रुत्वा तमुवाच मुनेः सुतः
He will be eloquent, discerning, and deeply versed in philosophical conclusions; hearing the king’s words, the sage’s son replied.
