उर्ध्वं विंशतिहस्तेभ्यः प्राकारं न शुभप्रदम् । सूत्रधारं तैलाकारं स्वर्णकारं च हीरकम्
Above twenty handspans, the wall is not auspicious; the architect, oil-maker, goldsmith, and jeweler likewise.
वाटीमूले ग्राममध्ये न कुर्यात्स्थापनं बुधः । ब्राह्मणं क्षत्त्रियं वैश्यं सच्छूद्रं गणकं शुभम्
A wise person should not establish a dwelling at the root of a garden or in the center of a village; a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, true Shudra, and auspicious astrologer.
भट्टं वैद्यं पुष्पकारं स्थापयेच्छिबिरान्तिके । प्रस्थे च परिखामानं शतहस्तं प्रशस्तकम्
A priest, a physician, and a flower arranger should be stationed near the encampment; and a moat, one hundred hastas wide and well-constructed, should be made around it.
परितः शिबिराणां च गम्भीरं दशहस्तकम् । संकेतपूर्वकं चैव परिखाद्वारमीप्सितम्
All around the encampments, a deep moat of ten hastas should be made; and the desired entrance to the moat should be set with prior arrangement.
शत्रोरगम्यं मित्रस्य गम्यमेव सुखेन च । शाल्मलीनां तिन्तिडीनां हिन्तालानां तथैव च
It should be impassable for the enemy, but easily accessible for friends; and trees such as śālmalī, tintiḍī, and hintāla should be used likewise.
निम्बाणां सिन्धुवाराणां बदरीणामभद्रकम् । धत्तूराणां वटानां चाप्येरण्डानामवाञ्छितम्
Also, nimbā, sindhuvāra, badarī, abhadra, dhattūra, vaṭa, and eraṇḍa trees are to be used as desired.
एतेषामतिरिक्तानां शिबिरे काष्ठमीप्सितम् । वृक्षं च वज्रहस्तं च भूधरो वर्जयेदधः
Apart from these, other types of wood are suitable for the encampment; but trees struck by lightning or those growing on anthills should be avoided.
पुत्रदारधनं हन्यादित्याह कमलोद्भवः । कथितं लोकशिक्षार्थं कुरु काष्ठं विना पुरीम्
Kamalodbhava (Brahmā) has said that such trees destroy children, wives, and wealth; this is taught for the instruction of the world—build the city without such wood.
शुभक्षणं चाप्यधुना गच्छ वत्स यथासुखम् । विश्वकर्मा हरिं नत्वा जगाम् पक्षिणा सह
Now, at this auspicious moment, go, dear one, as you wish; Viśvakarmā, having bowed to Hari, departed with the bird.
समुद्रस्य समीपं च वटमूलं मनोहरम् । सुष्वाप तत्र नक्तं च कारुश्च पक्षिणा सह
Near the ocean, at the charming root of a banyan tree, the artisan slept there at night, together with the bird.
स्वप्ने द्वारवतीं रम्यां ददर्श गरुडस्तथा । यत्किंचित्कथितं कारुं कृष्णेन परमात्मना
In a dream, Garuḍa saw the beautiful city of Dvāravatī, and whatever the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa had described to the artisan.
तदेव लक्षणं सर्वं ददर्श नगरे मुने । कारुं हसन्ति स्वप्ने च सर्वे ते शिल्पकारिणः
O sage, in the city he saw all those features exactly as described; and in the dream, all the artisans were laughing at the artisan.
गरुडं गरुडाश्चान्ये बलवन्तश्च पक्षिणः । बुद्धो ददर्श गरुडो विश्वकर्मा च लज्जितः
He saw Garuḍa, other Garuḍas, and powerful birds; Garuḍa understood, and Viśvakarmā was ashamed.
अतीव द्वारकां रम्यां शतयोजनविस्तृताम् । ब्रह्मादीनां च नगरं विजित्य च विराजिताम्
He saw Dvārakā, exceedingly beautiful and extending a hundred yojanas, a city of Brahmā and the others, splendid and victorious.
अथ चतुरधिकशततमोऽध्यायः नारायण उवाच एतस्मिन्नन्तरे ब्रह्मा भवान्या च भवः स्वयम् । अनन्तश्चापि धर्मश्च भास्करश्च हुताशनः
Then, in the one hundred and fourth chapter, Nārāyaṇa said: Meanwhile, Brahmā, Bhava with Bhavānī, Ananta, Dharma, Bhāskara, and Hutāśana,
कुबेरो वरुणश्चैव पवनश्च यमस्तथा । महेन्द्रश्चपि चन्द्रश्च रुद्राश्चैकादशैव ते
Kubera, Varuṇa, Pavana, Yama, Mahendra, Candra, and the eleven Rudras,
अन्ये देवाश्च मुनयो वसवः सप्त एव च । आदित्याश्चापि दैत्याश्च गन्धर्वाः किन्नरास्तथा
Other gods, sages, the seven Vasus, the Ādityas, the Daityas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras,
आययुर्द्वारकां द्रष्टुं श्रीकृष्णं च बलं तथा । आगच्छन्तं च सहसा वटमूलं मनोहरम्
All came to Dvārakā to see Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, and they swiftly arrived at the charming banyan tree.
दृष्ट्वा च देवताः सर्वास्तुष्टुवुः पुरुषोत्तमम् । आकाशाच्च विमानैश्च संप्राप्य वटमूलकम्
Having seen, all the deities praised the Supreme Person; coming from the sky and by their aerial vehicles, they reached the banyan root.
ददृशुर्द्वारकां रम्यामतीव सुमनोहरम् । मुक्तामाणिक्यहीरेणा रत्नराजिविराजिताम्
They saw Dvārakā, beautiful and exceedingly enchanting, adorned with pearls, rubies, sapphires, and splendid with rows of jewels.
परितश्चतुरस्रां च शतयोजनसंमिताम् । सप्तभिः परिखाभिश्च गम्भीराभिश्च वेष्टिताम्
All around, it was square, measuring a hundred yojanas, and encircled by seven deep moats.
प्राकारैर्नवभिर्युक्तां लक्षैः क्रीडासरोवरैः । मनोहरैः सपद्मैश्च सहितैश्च मधुव्रतैः
It was furnished with nine ramparts and adorned with hundreds of thousands of delightful lotus-filled pleasure-lakes, accompanied by swarms of bees.
शोभितां सर्वतोभद्रैः पुष्पोद्यानत्रिलक्षकैः । प्रफुल्लपुष्पैः पवनैः सर्वत्र सुरभीकृताम्
It shone with three hundred thousand auspicious flower gardens, everywhere made fragrant by breezes carrying fully blossomed flowers.
आमोदितां च शीतेन मन्दचन्दनवायुना । तरुभिर्नारिकेलाणां शोभितां शतकोटिभिः
It was perfumed by cool, gentle sandalwood-scented breezes, and beautified by a hundred crore coconut trees.
गुवाकानां च वृक्षैश्च भूषितां तच्चतुर्गुणैः । चतुर्गुणैर्गुवाकानां युक्तामाम्रमहीरुहैः
It was adorned with guvaka trees, four times as many as the coconuts, and with mango trees in the same fourfold measure.
परीतां पनसानां च वृक्षैराम्रसमैर्मुने । सुशोभितां च तालानां द्रुमैराम्रसमैर्मुने
It was surrounded by jackfruit trees and by mango trees, O sage, and splendid with palm trees and more mango trees, O sage.
अश्वत्थैर्बदरीभिश्च बिल्वैराम्रातकैर्वटैः । शाल्मलीभिश्च जम्बूभिः कदम्बैश्चापि शोभिताम्
It was beautified by peepal, jujube, bael, āmrātaka, banyan, silk-cotton, rose-apple, and kadamba trees.
वंशैश्च तिन्तिडीभिश्च चम्पकैर्बकुलैस्तथा । नागेश्वरैर्नागरङ्गैर्जम्बीरैर्दाडिमैर्युताम्
It was endowed with bamboo, tamarind, campaka, bakula, nāgeshvara, nāgaraṅga, citron, and pomegranate trees.
खर्जुरैरर्जुनैः पिष्टैरिक्षुभिः काञ्चनैरपि । हरीतकीभिर्धात्रीभिरिन्दुभिः परितः प्लुताम्
It was surrounded by date palms, arjuna, piṣṭa, sugarcane, golden bamboo, harītakī, dhātrī, and moon-like trees on all sides.
शालैः प्रियालैर्हिन्तालैः शिरीषैः सप्तपर्णकैः । अन्यैर्नानाद्रुमैरिष्टैरिष्टां युक्तां परिप्लुताम्
It was filled with śāla, priyāla, hintāla, śirīṣa, saptaparṇa, and many other desirable trees, making it most pleasing and abundant.
