हे कारो तिन्तिडीवृक्षो यत्नात्तं परिवर्जयेत् । शतेन धनहानिः स्यात्प्रजाहानिर्भवेद्ध्रुवम्
O Kāro, the tamarind tree should be carefully avoided; it causes loss of wealth by the hundred and certainly loss of offspring.
शिबिरेऽतिनिषिद्धश्च नगरे किंचिदेव च । न निषिद्धः प्रसिद्धश्च ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च
It is greatly prohibited in the camp, and somewhat so in the city; it is not prohibited but renowned in villages and cities.
विद्यामतिनिषिद्धश्च प्राज्ञस्तं परिवर्जयेत् । खर्जूरश्च गहुश्चैव निषिद्धः शिबिरे तथा
It is greatly prohibited for the learned, who should avoid it; the date and wheat are also prohibited in the camp.
न निषिद्धः प्रसिद्धश्च ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च । वृक्षश्च चणकादीनां धान्यं च मङ्गलप्रदम्
They are not prohibited but renowned in villages and cities; trees and grains such as chickpeas are auspicious.
ग्रामेषु नगरे चापि शिबिरे च तथैव च । इक्षुवृक्षश्च शुभदः संततं शुभदस्तथा
In villages, cities, and likewise in camps, the sugarcane plant is always auspicious and brings good fortune.
अशोकश्च शिरीषश्च कदम्बश्च शुभप्रदः । कच्चिद्धरिद्रा शुभदा शुभदश्चाऽऽर्द्रकस्तथा
The Ashoka, Shirisha, and Kadamba trees bestow auspiciousness; turmeric is sometimes auspicious, and ginger is also auspicious.
हरीतकी च शुभदा ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च । न वाद्या भद्रदा नित्यं तथा चाऽऽमलकी घ्रुवम्
Haritaki is auspicious in villages and cities; musical instruments do not always bring good fortune, nor does the amalaki, certainly.
गजानामस्थि शुभदमश्वानां च तथैव च । कल्याणमुच्चैःश्रवसां वास्तौ स्थापनकारिणाम्
The bones of elephants and horses are auspicious; the placement of the bones of Uchchaihshravas in a dwelling brings prosperity.
न शुभप्रदमन्येषामुच्छिन्नकारणं परम् । वानराणां नराणां च गर्दभानां गवामपि
For others, the bones are not auspicious, especially if removed; for monkeys, humans, donkeys, and cows, likewise.
कुक्कुराणां शृगालानां मार्जाराणामभद्रकम् । भेटकानां सूकराणां सर्वेषां च शुभप्रदम्
For dogs, jackals, cats, goats, and pigs, all are inauspicious; none of these bring good fortune.
ईशाने चापि पूर्वस्मिन्पश्चिमे च तथोत्तरे । शिबिरस्य जलं भद्रमन्यत्राशुभमेव च
In the northeast, east, west, and north, water in the camp is auspicious; elsewhere, it is inauspicious.
दीर्घे प्रस्थे समानं च न कुर्यान्मन्दिरे बुधः । चतुरस्रे गृहे कारो गृहिणां धननाशनम्
A wise person should not construct a house that is long or rectangular; a square house brings loss of wealth to the householder.
दीर्घप्रस्थः परिमितो नेत्राङ्केनापि संहृतम् । शून्येन रहितं भद्रं शून्यं शून्यप्रदं नृणाम्
A long rectangle, measured and marked by the eye, is auspicious if empty; emptiness brings emptiness to people.
प्रस्थे हस्तद्वयात्पूर्वं दीर्घे हस्तत्रयं तथा । गृहाणां शुभदं द्वारं प्राकारस्य गृहस्य च
In a rectangle, the door should be two handspans from the front; in a long house, three handspans; the door of the house and its wall bring auspiciousness.
न मध्यदेशे कर्तव्यं किंचिन्न्यूनाधिके शुभम् । चतुरस्रं चन्द्रवेधं शिबिरं मङ्गलप्रदम्
Nothing should be constructed in the central region, whether less or more; a square camp with a lunar intersection is auspicious.
अभद्रदं सूर्यवेधं शिबिरं मङ्गलप्रदम् । अभद्रदं सूर्यवेधं प्राङ्गणं च तथैव च
A camp with a solar intersection is inauspicious, though it may bring auspiciousness; a solar intersection in the courtyard is likewise inauspicious.
शिबिराभ्यन्तरे भद्रा स्थापिता तुलसी नृणाम् । धनपुत्रप्रदात्री च पुण्यदा हरिभक्तिदा
Tulasi, placed within the camp, is auspicious for people; she grants wealth, children, virtue, and devotion to Hari.
प्रभाते तुलसीं दृष्ट्वा स्वर्णदानफलं लभेत् । मालती यूथिका कुन्दं माधवी केतकी तथा
Seeing Tulasi in the morning yields the fruit of giving gold; jasmine, yuthika, kunda, madhavi, and ketaki likewise.
नागेश्वरं मल्लिकां च काञ्चनं बकुलं शुभम् । अपराजिता च शुभदा तेषामुद्यानमीप्सितम्
Nageshvara, mallika, kanchana, bakula, and aparajita are auspicious; their garden is desirable.
पूर्वे च दक्षिणे चैव शुभदं नात्र संशयः । ऊर्ध्वं षोडशहस्तेभ्यो नैव कुर्याद्गृहं गृही
In the east and south, it is auspicious without doubt; above sixteen handspans, the householder should not build a house.
उर्ध्वं विंशतिहस्तेभ्यः प्राकारं न शुभप्रदम् । सूत्रधारं तैलाकारं स्वर्णकारं च हीरकम्
Above twenty handspans, the wall is not auspicious; the architect, oil-maker, goldsmith, and jeweler likewise.
वाटीमूले ग्राममध्ये न कुर्यात्स्थापनं बुधः । ब्राह्मणं क्षत्त्रियं वैश्यं सच्छूद्रं गणकं शुभम्
A wise person should not establish a dwelling at the root of a garden or in the center of a village; a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, true Shudra, and auspicious astrologer.
भट्टं वैद्यं पुष्पकारं स्थापयेच्छिबिरान्तिके । प्रस्थे च परिखामानं शतहस्तं प्रशस्तकम्
A priest, a physician, and a flower arranger should be stationed near the encampment; and a moat, one hundred hastas wide and well-constructed, should be made around it.
परितः शिबिराणां च गम्भीरं दशहस्तकम् । संकेतपूर्वकं चैव परिखाद्वारमीप्सितम्
All around the encampments, a deep moat of ten hastas should be made; and the desired entrance to the moat should be set with prior arrangement.
शत्रोरगम्यं मित्रस्य गम्यमेव सुखेन च । शाल्मलीनां तिन्तिडीनां हिन्तालानां तथैव च
It should be impassable for the enemy, but easily accessible for friends; and trees such as śālmalī, tintiḍī, and hintāla should be used likewise.
निम्बाणां सिन्धुवाराणां बदरीणामभद्रकम् । धत्तूराणां वटानां चाप्येरण्डानामवाञ्छितम्
Also, nimbā, sindhuvāra, badarī, abhadra, dhattūra, vaṭa, and eraṇḍa trees are to be used as desired.
एतेषामतिरिक्तानां शिबिरे काष्ठमीप्सितम् । वृक्षं च वज्रहस्तं च भूधरो वर्जयेदधः
Apart from these, other types of wood are suitable for the encampment; but trees struck by lightning or those growing on anthills should be avoided.
पुत्रदारधनं हन्यादित्याह कमलोद्भवः । कथितं लोकशिक्षार्थं कुरु काष्ठं विना पुरीम्
Kamalodbhava (Brahmā) has said that such trees destroy children, wives, and wealth; this is taught for the instruction of the world—build the city without such wood.
शुभक्षणं चाप्यधुना गच्छ वत्स यथासुखम् । विश्वकर्मा हरिं नत्वा जगाम् पक्षिणा सह
Now, at this auspicious moment, go, dear one, as you wish; Viśvakarmā, having bowed to Hari, departed with the bird.
समुद्रस्य समीपं च वटमूलं मनोहरम् । सुष्वाप तत्र नक्तं च कारुश्च पक्षिणा सह
Near the ocean, at the charming root of a banyan tree, the artisan slept there at night, together with the bird.
