गुणे प्रकृष्टसत्त्वे च प्रशब्दो वर्तते श्रुतौ
In the scriptures, the prefix 'pra' is used to indicate superior quality and excellence in sattva.
त्रिगुणात्मस्वरूपा या सर्वशक्तिसमन्विता
She whose nature consists of the three qualities, endowed with all powers.
प्रथमे वर्त्तते प्रश्च कृतिस्स्यात्सृष्टिवाचकः
The prefix 'pra' comes first, and 'kṛti' means creation.
योगेनात्मा सृष्टिविधौ द्विधारूपो बभूव सः
By means of yoga, the self became twofold in the process of creation.
सा च ब्रह्मस्वरूपा स्यान्माया नित्या सनातनी 2.1.
And she is of the nature of Brahman, eternal and everlasting illusion.
अतएव हि योगीन्द्रः स्त्रीपुंभेदं न मन्यते
Therefore, the supreme yogi does not consider the distinction between female and male.
स्वेच्छामयस्येच्छया च श्रीकृष्णस्य सिसृक्षया
By the will of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who acts according to his own desire, and with his intention to create,
तदाज्ञया पञ्चविधा सृष्टिकर्मणि भेदतः
By his command, the fivefold acts of creation occur in various forms.
गणेशमाता दुर्गा या शिवरूपा शिवप्रिया
Ganeśa's mother is Durgā, who is the form of Śiva and beloved of Śiva.
ब्रह्मादिदेवैर्मुनिभिर्मनुभिः पूजिता सदा
She is always worshipped by Brahmā and the other gods, sages, and Manus.
यशोमङ्गलधर्मश्रीसत्यपुण्यप्रदायिनी
She bestows fame, auspiciousness, righteousness, prosperity, truth, and merit.
शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणा
She is devoted to rescuing those who are distressed, poor, or have sought refuge.
सर्वशक्तिस्वरूपा च शक्तिरीशस्य सन्ततम्
She is the embodiment of all powers, and the constant energy of the Lord.
बुद्धिर्निद्रा क्षुत्पिपासा च्छाया तन्द्रा दया स्मृतिः
Intelligence, sleep, hunger, thirst, shadow, lethargy, compassion, and memory,
तुष्टिः पुष्टिस्तथा लक्ष्मीर्वृत्तिर्माता तथैव च 2.1.
Contentment, nourishment, Lakṣmī, livelihood, and motherhood as well.
उक्तः श्रुतौ श्रुतगुणश्चातिस्वल्पो यथागमम्
In the scriptures, her qualities are described, though only briefly, according to tradition.
शुद्धसत्त्वस्वरूपा या पद्मा च परमात्मनः
She who is the embodiment of pure sattva, Padmā, belongs to the Supreme Self.
कान्ता दान्ताऽतिशान्ता च सुशीला सर्वमङ्गला
She is beautiful, restrained, exceedingly peaceful, virtuous, and the source of all auspiciousness.
त्यक्ताऽनुरक्ता पत्युश्च सर्वाद्या च पतिव्रता
She is detached, yet affectionate to her husband, foremost among all, and devoted to her spouse.
सर्वसस्यात्मिका सर्वजीवनोपायरूपिणी
She is the essence of all crops and the form of sustenance for all living beings.
स्वर्गे च स्वर्गलक्ष्मीश्च राजलक्ष्मीश्च राजसु
In heaven she is the goddess of fortune, and among kings she is royal prosperity.
सर्वेषु प्राणिद्रव्येषु शोभारूपा मनोहरा
In all living beings and possessions, she appears as beauty and delight.
वाणिज्यरूपा वणिजां पापिनां कलहङ्करी
She takes the form of commerce among merchants, and among the wicked she brings quarrels.
चपले चपला भक्तसम्पदो रक्षणाय च
She is fickle among the fickle, and protects the wealth of devotees.
शक्तिर्द्वितीया कथिता वेदोक्ता सर्वसम्मता ।। 2.1.
The second is Śakti, as declared in the Vedas and accepted by all.
वाग्बुद्धिविद्याज्ञानाधिदेवता परमात्मनः
She is the presiding deity of speech, intellect, knowledge, and wisdom of the Supreme Self.
सुबुद्धिः कविता मेधा प्रतिभा स्मृतिदा सताम्
She grants good understanding, poetry, intelligence, brilliance, and memory to the virtuous.
व्याख्याबोधस्वरूपा च सर्वसंदेहभञ्जिनी
She is the embodiment of explanation and comprehension, the destroyer of all doubts.
सर्वसङ्गीतसन्धानतालकारणरूपिणी
She takes the form of all music, melody, and rhythm.
यया विना च विश्वौघो मूको मृतसमः सदा
Without her, the entire world is always mute, as if lifeless.
