सावित्र्युवाच परात्परतरं श्यामं निर्विकारं निरञ्जनम्
Savitri said: The One who is beyond the highest, dark-hued, changeless, and stainless.
इत्युक्त्वा सस्मिता देवी रत्नसिंहासने वरे
Having spoken thus, the smiling goddess sat upon the splendid jeweled throne.
आविर्बभूव तत्पश्चात्कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः
After that, she appeared before Krishna, the Supreme Self.
मनो मथ्नाति सर्वेषां पञ्चबाणेन कामिनाम्
He agitates the minds of all lovers with his five arrows.
तस्य पुंसो वामपार्श्वात्कामस्य कामिनी वरा
From the left side of that man, the best of desiring women, Kama’s beloved, arose.
रतिर्बभूव सर्वेषां तां दृष्ट्वा सस्मितां सतीम्
Rati, the beloved of all, appeared, seeing her, smiling and virtuous.
हरिं स्तुत्वा तया सार्द्धं स उवास हरेः पुरः 1.4.
Having praised Hari, he remained there together with her before Hari’s presence.
मारणं स्तम्भनं चैव जृम्भणं शोषणं तथा
Kama released all his arrows—of killing, stupefying, causing yawning, and drying up.
बाणांश्चिक्षेप सर्वांश्च कामो बाणपरीक्षया
Kama shot all his arrows as a test of their power.
रतिं दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मणश्च रेतः पातो वभूव ह
Seeing Rati, Brahma’s seed fell forth.
वस्त्रं दग्ध्वा समुत्तस्थौ ज्वलदग्निः सुरेश्वरः
Burning up his garment, the blazing fire rose up, O lord of the gods.
कृष्णस्तद्वर्द्धनं दृष्ट्वा ससर्जापः स्वलीलया
Seeing that increase, Krishna, by his own play, created water.
विश्वौघं प्लावयामास मुखबिंदुजलं द्विज
He flooded the universe with water arising from a drop from his mouth, O twice-born.
ततःप्रभृति तेनाग्निस्तोयान्निर्वाणतां व्रजेत्
From that time onward, fire is extinguished by water.
उत्तस्थौ तज्जलादेकः पुमान्स वरुणः स्मृतः
From those waters, a single man arose—he is known as Varuna.
आविर्बभूव कन्यैका तद्वह्नेर्वामपार्श्वतः
From the left side of that fire, a single maiden appeared.
जलेशस्य वामपार्श्वात्कन्या चैका बभूव सा 1.4.
From the left side of the lord of waters, a single maiden was born.
बभूव पवनः श्रीमान्विभोर्निश्वासवायुतः
The glorious wind arose, born from the breath of the Supreme.
तस्य वायोर्वामपार्श्वात्कन्या चैका बभूव ह
From the left side of that wind, indeed, a maiden was born.
कृष्णस्य कामबाणेन रेतःपातो बभूव ह
By the arrow of desire from Krishna, a discharge of seed occurred.
सहस्रवत्सरान्ते तड्डिम्भरूपं बभूव ह
At the end of a thousand years, it took the form of a water-bubble.
यस्यैक लोमविवरे विश्वैकस्य व्यवस्थितिः
In a single pore of whose body abides the entirety of the universe.
स एव षोडशांशोऽपि कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः
He is but a sixteenth part even of Krishna, the Supreme Soul.
महार्णवे शयानः स पद्मपत्रं यथा जले
He lay upon the great ocean, like a lotus leaf upon water.
तौ जलाच्च समुत्थाय ब्रह्माणं हन्तुमुद्यतौ
They arose from the waters, intent on slaying Brahma.
बभूव मेदिनी कृत्स्ना कार्त्स्न्येन मेदसा तया
The entire earth came into being from that very marrow.
मम संदेहभेदार्थं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
For the removal of my doubt, you ought to explain this to me.
सर्वादिसृष्टिकथनं यन्मया कथितं द्विज
All the account of the creation at the beginning, as I have related, O twice-born one,
सर्वादिसृष्टौ क्लृप्तौ च नारायणमहेश्वरौ
At the beginning of all creation, Narayana and Maheshvara were established.
सर्वादौ ब्रह्मकल्पस्य चरितं कथितं द्विज
At the very beginning of the Brahma-kalpa, the narrative was told, O twice-born one.
