Seeing Rādhikā unconscious, Mādhavī, after considering, spoke before Rādhā, standing in her presence.
Mādhavī said: What is it—the theft of Kṛṣṇa, or his form, or his excellent attire? What is his happiness, his wealth, or his unsurpassed majesty?
What is his power, his lordliness, or his unconquerable valor? What is established or renowned about him, or what supreme quality is equal to him?
From where did he come, and where did he go again? He is a boy in a cowherd's dress, not the son of a king, not a man.
Why do you remember, O blessed one, the cowherd, the joy of Nanda? Protect yourself with care; who else is dearer to oneself than oneself?
Shame on you, Rādhā, so shameless! Your very life is wasted; you bring disgrace to the women of the world.
A woman should guard her reputation; openly, she brings her own fame to ruin. With effort, O friend, keep your eyes under control.
Within, conceal your feelings for your husband; keep your emotions hidden. There is truly no distinction of birth among enemies or friends, O Lady of the gods.
An enemy, by necessity, may become a friend through action; the wise person advances their own purpose, while destruction of purpose is the mark of folly.
Who is dear to whom, O Radha, and who is disliked by whom? Knowing the occasion and purpose, the wise act accordingly at all times.
An enemy is one who steals wealth, takes life, speaks harshly, and causes suffering; listen to the marks of enemies.
Having cast you out from your own family and abandoned you in the ocean of sorrow, he took your consciousness and life, departing cruelly and harshly.
What do you remember, O confused one? Abandon this terrible grief. Protect yourself with effort; who is dearer to oneself than oneself?
Padmavati said: You have spoken fully in the presence of Yamuna's waters; for women, pleasure in the tasteless is far away, and happiness is not found, O beloved.
A streak of lightning in water, and affection among the wicked, are fleeting; there is no trust in the wicked, nor in the treatises on conduct.
When you, on the bank of the Yamuna, saw Hari's face—smiling and glancing sideways—and then concealed it again,
Again and again you gazed, and your consciousness was abandoned; you left home, fearing elders, and disregarded the good words of your friends.
You constantly meditate on Krishna, neglecting food and life; where is Krishna in Mathura, and where are you in the banana grove?
If you abandon your life, he does not appear now; in time you will see yourself, if you protect yourself, O beautiful one.
Candramukhi said: By past actions, all happiness and prosperity endure for a long time; by past actions, sorrow and misfortune arise now.
In Bharata, the sacred land, desired by all, one may obtain Hari as husband and beloved, through austerity, beyond nature.
Yet even so, the body burns now with the arrow of desire; how is the moon an enemy, and how are Madhu and Madhava sweet?
Manmatha was burned by Shankara, yet he returned again; Rahu devours the moon, and then vomits it out once more.
Madhu, afflicted by grief for his friend, abandoned his life and went to Yama; for me, the nectar ocean is the moon, and the poison ocean.
Beautiful attire is like blazing fire, sandalwood is like a ghee offering; it continually burns the body, and the fragrant wind as well.
My friend, having abandoned food, breathes and lives; praise Krishna with your mouth, O descendant of the Kurus.
By merely remembering his name, by hearing of his qualities, or by auspicious conversation about him, one suddenly becomes conscious (spiritually awakened).
Śaśikalā said: O Mādhavī, do you truly know Krishna, the Supreme Lord himself, whom even Brahmā and the other gods, as well as the four Vedas, seek to understand?
The virtuous constantly meditate upon his lotus feet, which are desired by the gods; Padmā (Lakṣmī), Sarasvatī, Durgā, Ananta, and Maheśvara (Śiva) as well.
Even the perfected beings, Indra among sages, and the Manus do not know him; how then can the form of the all-pervading one be known, or qualities be ascribed to the one without qualities?
