स एवांशेन भगवान्वैकुण्ठे च चतुर्भुजः
He alone, in part, is the four-armed Lord in Vaikuṇṭha.
स एव कलया विष्णुः पाता च जगतां प्रभुः
He alone, as Viṣṇu by his portion, is the Lord who protects the worlds.
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं परब्रह्मस्वरूपकम् 1.28.
All this which has been described to you is of the nature of the Supreme Brahman.
इत्युक्त्वा शङ्करस्तत्र विरराम च शौनक
Having spoken thus, Śaṅkara there became silent, O Śaunaka.
मुनिस्तोत्रेण सन्तुष्टो भगवानादिरच्युतः
The Blessed, Primeval, Imperishable One was pleased by the sage’s hymn.
मुनीन्द्रस्तं संप्रणम्य प्रहृष्टवदनेक्षणः
The chief of sages, with a delighted face and gaze, bowed down to Him.
सौतिरुवाच ऋषिर्नारायणस्यैव बदरीवनसंयुतम्
Sauti said: The sage, accompanied by Nārāyaṇa, was in the Badarī forest.
नानावृक्षफलाकीर्णं पुंस्कोकिलरुतश्रुतम्
It was filled with various trees and fruits, and the sounds of male cuckoos were heard.
ऋषीन्द्रस्य प्रभावेण हिंसाभयविवर्जितम्
By the power of the chief of sages, it was free from violence and fear.
सिद्धेन्द्राणां मुनीन्द्राणामाश्रमाणां त्रिकोटिभिः
There were three crores of hermitages of perfected beings and great sages.
ददर्श तमृषीन्द्रं च सभामध्ये मनोहरम्
He saw that chief of sages, enchanting, in the midst of the assembly.
जपन्तं परमं ब्रह्म कृष्णमात्मानमीश्वरम्
He was reciting the supreme Brahman—Kṛṣṇa, the Self, the Lord.
उत्थाय सहसाऽऽलिङ्ग्य युयुजे परमाशिषम्
Rising up suddenly, embracing him, he bestowed the highest blessing.
रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये वासयामास नारदम्
He seated Nārada on a beautiful jeweled throne.
उवाच तमृषिश्रेष्ठं भगवन्तं सनातनम्
He spoke to that best of sages, the eternal Lord.
ज्ञानं सम्प्राप्य योगीन्द्रान्मन्त्रं वै शङ्कराद्विभो 1.29.
Having attained knowledge and the mantra from Śaṅkara, O Lord, the chief of yogis—
दृष्टं मया त्वत्पदाब्जं मनसा प्रेरितेन च
I have seen your lotus feet with my mind directed towards you.
यत्र कृष्णगुणाख्यानं जन्ममृत्युजरापहम्
Where the narration of Kṛṣṇa’s qualities is told, which removes birth, death, and old age—
ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाद्याश्च सुरेन्द्रश्च सुरा विभो
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and other gods, and the lord of the gods, O Lord—
कस्मात्सृष्टिश्च भवति कुत्र वा संप्रलीयते
From what does creation arise, and where does it dissolve?
तस्येश्वरस्य किं रूपं कर्म वा किं जगत्पते
O Lord of the universe, what is his form, and what are his deeds?
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य भगवानृषिः
Hearing the words of Nārada, the blessed sage smiled.
इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे ब्रह्मखण्डे सौतिशौनकसंवादे नारायणं प्रति नारदप्रश्नो नामैकोनत्रिंशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the thirty-ninth chapter named 'Nārada's Question to Nārāyaṇa' in the dialogue between Sūta and Śaunaka, in the Brahma-khaṇḍa of the great Purāṇa, Śrī Brahmavaivarta.
श्रीनारायण उवाच वाणीशिवात्रिपथगा कमलादिकाश्च संचिन्तयेद्भगवतश्चरणारविन्दम्
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: One should contemplate upon the lotus feet of the Lord, as worshipped by Vāṇī (Sarasvatī), Śivā (Pārvatī), Gaṅgā, Lakṣmī, and others.
संसारसागरमतीव गभीरघोरं दावाग्निसर्पपरिवेष्टितचेष्टिताङ्गम्
The ocean of worldly existence is extremely deep and terrible, with limbs tormented as if encircled by wildfire and serpents.
गोवर्द्धनोद्धरणकीर्त्तिरतीव खिन्ना भूर्धारिता च दशनाग्रत एव चार्द्रा
The fame of lifting Govardhana is exceedingly wearied, the earth is upheld, and even at the tips of his teeth, it is moist.
वेदाङ्गवेदमुखनिःसृतकीर्त्तिरंशैर्वेदाङ्गवेदजनकस्य हरेर्विधातुः
By rays of fame issuing from the mouths of the Vedas and their limbs, Hari, the creator of the Vedas and their limbs, is known.
गोपाङ्गनावदनपङ्कजषट्पदस्य रासेश्वरस्य रसिकारमणस्य पुंसः
He is the bee at the lotus faces of the cowherd maidens, the Lord of the rāsa dance, the enjoyer, the supreme person.
चक्षुर्निमेषपतितो जगतां विधाता तत्कर्म वत्स कथितुं भुवि कः समर्थः
The creator of the worlds, in the blink of his eye, performs such deeds—O child, who on earth is able to recount them?
यूयं वयं तस्य कलाकलांशाः कलाकलांशा मनवो मुनीन्द्राः
You and we, as well as the Manus and great sages, are but fractions of fractions of his power.
