You alone are Ganga, Tulasi, and also Svaha and Sati; by a mere fraction of your portion, all the goddesses, beginning with the deities, are manifested.
O Goddess, you are the form of woman, the supreme form of man, and also the neuter; among trees, you are the form of the banyan, and you are created as the sprouting shoot.
In fire, you are the power of burning; in water, you are the form of coolness; in the sun, you are the very form of brilliance and ever the form of light.
On earth, you are the form of fragrance; in space, you are the form of sound; you are the very form of beauty in the moon and certainly in the assembly of lotuses.
In creation, you are the very form of creation; in preservation, the preserver; at dissolution, you are the great destroyer, and in water, you are the very form of water.
You are hunger, you are compassion, you are sleep, you are thirst, and you are the form of intelligence; you are satisfaction, nourishment, faith, and you yourself are forgiveness.
You yourself are peace, delusion, beauty, and indeed fame; you are modesty, and likewise illusion, enjoyment—
You are the embodiment of all powers, the bestower of all prosperity; in the Vedas, you are indescribable—no one knows you.
O Queen of the gods, even one with a thousand mouths is not able to praise you; the Vedas are not able, nor is any learned one, nor even Sarasvati herself.
Even the Creator himself is not able, nor is the eternal Vishnu; so how can I, terrified in battle, praise you with my five mouths, O Great Goddess?
Show mercy, O Great Enchantress, destroy my enemies; having spoken thus with compassion, as he fell on the chariot in battle—
There appeared Durga, radiant as ten million suns, prompted by the supreme soul Narayana out of compassion.
Swiftly, before Shiva and for his victory, the Great Goddess spoke: 'By the power of Maya, slay the demon.'
Durga said: 'Choose a boon, auspicious one, whatever you desire in your heart; you are the best of the gods, I grant you victory.'
Mahadeva said: 'Let there be the destruction of the demon—this is the boon I desire, O Goddess; grant this, O Durga, O Primal One, O stainless-bodied.'
The Goddess said: 'Remember Hari, O greatly fortunate one; the Lord, the teacher of the world, will conquer the demon. The Creator himself is the Lord, and you are indeed the Lord of light.'
Meanwhile, Vishnu took the form of a bull and, by a portion of his power, bore the chariot of the trident-holder upon his head.
He created the fierce upward-spinning discus and the primal energy; he gave a weapon purified by mantra and then lifted the chariot.
Śiva, taking up his weapon and meditating on Viṣṇu and the great goddess, swiftly destroyed Tripura, and it fell to the earth.
The gods praised Śaṃkara and showered flowers; Durgā gave him the heroic Pināka bow, and so did Viṣṇu.
Brahmā offered auspicious blessings, and the delighted sages did as well; all the deities danced, and the Gandharvas and Kinnaras sang.
Meanwhile, O dear one, the supreme king of hymns—remover of obstacles, swift, and the cause of the destruction of enemies—
It bestows the highest sovereignty, brings happiness, is supremely auspicious, grants liberation and release, and surely gives devotion to Hari.
It grants residence in Goloka and all perfections; by reciting the king of hymns, Pārvatī is always pleased.
It cuts the roots of greed, delusion, desire, anger, and karma; it gives strength and intelligence, and destroys birth and death.
It bestows wealth, children, beloveds, land, and all prosperity to people; it removes sorrow and suffering, and grants every success.
By reciting the king of hymns, even a great barren woman bears children; the afflicted are freed from bondage, and certainly are released from fear.
The sick are freed from illness, and the poor become wealthy; one does not die in a forest fire, nor does a boat sink in the great ocean.
Whether beset by bandits, enemies, or fierce creatures, O king of merchants, by this hymn a person attains well-being.
As among gems the best is of fire-born origin, among hermitages the best is of the twice-born, among rivers the Gaṅgā, and among mantras the Praṇava—
