स भवेन्नक्रजातिश्च कच्छपश्च त्रिजन्मसु । वृथा मांसं च यो भुङ्क्ते मत्स्यलुब्धश्च ब्राह्मणः
He becomes a crocodile, and for three births a turtle; a Brahmin who eats meat without purpose and is greedy for fish.
भुङ्क्ते मांसमदत्तं च स मीनश्च मृगो भवेत् । वर्षाणां च सहस्रं च तात भुक्त्वा च किल्बिषम्
He who eats meat not given to him becomes a fish or a deer; after eating sin for a thousand years, O dear one.
कर्मभोगाच्छुचिर्भूत्वा स पुनर्ब्राह्मणो भवेत् । एकादशीविहीनश्च ब्राह्मणः पतितोभवेत्
After experiencing the result of his actions, becoming pure, he is again born as a Brahmin; a Brahmin who neglects the Ekādaśī becomes fallen.
भक्ष्यस्य द्विगुणं दत्त्वा तेन पापेन मुच्यते । मम जन्मदिने चैव यो भुङ्क्ते मानवोऽधमः
By giving twice the amount of food, he is freed from that sin; but the lowest man who eats on my birthday—
त्रैलोक्यजनितं पापं सोऽपि भुङ्क्ते न संशयः । भुक्त्वा च नरकं सर्वं पश्चाच्चण्डालतां व्रजेत्
He certainly endures the sin generated in the three worlds; and after suffering all the torments of hell, he is then born as a caṇḍāla.
एवं च शिवरातौ च श्रीरामनवमीदिने । उपवासासमर्थश्च हविष्यान्नं समाचरेत्
Thus, on Śivarātri and on the day of Rāma Navamī, if one is unable to fast, one should partake of food suitable for offerings.
ततोऽशक्तो दुर्बलश्च भोजयेद्ब्राह्मणानपि । कृत्वा महोत्सवं पुण्यं मदीयं पातकाच्छुचिः
Then, if he is weak and incapable, he should feed even brāhmaṇas, and by celebrating a great festival, he becomes purified from my sin.
तस्माद्यत्नेन कर्तव्यं नामसंकीर्तनं मम । गृध्रः कोटिसहस्राणि शतजन्मानि सूकरः
Therefore, one must diligently perform the chanting of my names; a vulture for ten million births, a pig for a hundred births—
श्वापदः शतजन्मानि कुह्वां च निशि भोजनात् । अदीक्षितो द्विजश्चैव शङ्खश्चिल्लः
A wild beast for a hundred births, an owl from eating at night, an uninitiated twice-born, and a conch-shell worm—
अनुद्वाही द्विजश्चैव राजहंसो भवद्ध्रुवम् । चित्रवस्त्रापहारी च मयूरश्च त्रिजन्मसु
A twice-born who does not marry certainly becomes a royal swan; one who steals colorful garments becomes a peacock for three births.
तेजःपत्रापहारी च भवेत्कारण्डवश्चिरम् । सुराणां प्रतिमाचोरोऽप्यन्धश्च सप्तचन्मसु
One who steals a leaf of brilliance becomes a kāraṇḍava duck for a long time; one who steals images of the gods, or is blind, for seven births.
दरिद्रो व्याधियुक्तश्च बधिरश्चापि कुब्जकः । स्त्रीतैलमधुमांसानि रवौ वा पञ्चपर्वसु
He becomes poor, afflicted by disease, deaf, or hunchbacked; whoever, on a Sunday or on the five-parvan days, consumes women's oil, honey, or meat—
सेवते यो महामूढो वज्रदंष्ट्रं व्रजेद्ध्रुवम् । पातकी दुःखितस्तत्र वर्षाणां च सहस्रकम्
That most deluded one certainly attains the form of a wild boar with iron tusks; the sinner suffers there in misery for a thousand years.
ततो भवति म्लेच्छश्च चाण्डालः सप्तजन्मसु । व्यावियुक्तस्ततः शूद्रो ब्राह्मणश्च ततः शुचिः
After that, he becomes a mleccha and a caṇḍāla for seven births; then separated, he is born as a śūdra, and after that, a pure brāhmaṇa.
तस्माद्यत्नान्न भोक्तव्यं भारते धर्मभीरुणा । ब्राह्मणं च सुरं दृष्ट्वा न नमेद्यो नराधमः
Therefore, one who fears dharma should not eat in Bhārata; and seeing a brāhmaṇa or a god, the lowest of men should not fail to bow.
यावज्जीवनपर्यन्तमशुचिर्यवनो भवेत् । अभ्युत्थानं न कुरुते दृष्ट्वा चाऽऽगतब्राह्मणम्
As long as he lives, he remains impure and a barbarian, if he does not rise upon seeing a brāhmaṇa who has arrived.
स भवेद्ब्रह्मघाती च सप्तजन्मसु निश्चितम् । शिवद्वेषी कुक्कुटश्च देवलः सप्तजन्ममु
He certainly becomes a slayer of brāhmaṇas for seven births; one who hates Śiva becomes a rooster, and a devala for seven births.
पितृदेवान्चनं हन्ति वेदोक्तं ज्ञानदुर्बलः । स याति नरमं पापी वर्षाणां च सहस्रकम्
He who kills his ancestors or gods, or is weak in Vedic knowledge, that sinner goes to hell for a thousand years.
ततश्च रौरवं भुक्त्वा तीर्थकाकस्त्रिचन्मसु । त्रिजन्मसु शृगालश्च तीर्थे भुङ्क्ते शवं व्रज
Then, after suffering in Raurava, he becomes a crow at a holy place for three births; for three births, a jackal who eats corpses at a holy place.
त्रिजन्मसु भवेत्सोऽपि तीर्थेषु शवरक्षकः । शवानां करमादत्ते कर्मणा कृतपातकी
For three births, he becomes a guardian of corpses at holy places; by his actions, the sinner takes the hand of corpses.
नित्यं सुरार्चनं कृत्वा दाम्भिको ज्ञानदुर्बलः । गुरुं च नार्चयेद्भक्त्या तस्मै नान्नं ददाति यः
Always worshipping the gods with hypocrisy and weak in knowledge, he who does not worship his guru with devotion, and does not give him food—
स भवेद्देलो दुःखी देवशापेन पातकी । नित्यं सुरार्चनं कृत्वा दाम्भिको ज्ञानदुर्बलः
He becomes a devala, miserable, a sinner by the curse of the gods; always worshipping the gods with hypocrisy and weak in knowledge.
पूचाफलं न लभते देवद्रोही स दारुपाः । दीपनिर्वाणकर्ता च खद्योल सप्तचन्मसु
The one who acts against the gods, and who is made of wood, does not obtain the fruit of pūcā; the one who extinguishes lamps becomes a khadyola for seven births.
अतीव मत्स्यलब्धश्चाप्यनैवेद्यं च खादति । स भवेन्मत्स्यरङ्गश्च मार्जरिः सप्तजन्मसु
One who excessively catches fish and eats food not offered to the gods becomes a fish-bodied being and a cat for seven births.
गोणीहर्ता कपोतश्च मालाहर्ता विहंगमः । चटको धान्यचोरश्च मांसचोरश्च कुंजरः
The thief of sacks becomes a pigeon; the thief of garlands becomes a bird; the thief of grains becomes a sparrow; the thief of meat becomes an elephant.
कविः प्रहर्ता विदुषां माण्ड्रकः सप्तजन्मसु । असत्कविर्ग्रामविप्रो नकुलः सप्तजन्मसु
A poet who strikes the learned becomes a māṇḍraka for seven births; a false poet and a village priest become a mongoose for seven births.
कुष्ठी भवेच्च जन्मैकं कृकलासस्त्रिजन्मसु । जन्मैकं वरलश्चैव ततो वृक्षपिपीलिका
One becomes a leper for one birth, a vulture for three births, and a varala for one birth; thereafter, a tree-dwelling ant.
ततः शूद्रश्च वैश्यश्च क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणस्तथा । कन्याविक्रयकारी च चतुर्वर्णो हि मानवः
Then, a Śūdra, a Vaiśya, a Kṣatriya, and a Brāhmaṇa; one who sells maidens becomes a person of all four castes.
सद्यः प्रयाति तामिस्रं यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ । ततौ भवति व्याधश्च मांसविक्रयकारकः
He immediately goes to Tāmisra hell for as long as the moon and sun endure; then he becomes a hunter, a seller of meat.
ततो व्याधि(धो)र्भवेत्पश्चाद्यो यथा पूर्वचन्मनि । मन्नामविक्रयी विप्रोन हि मुक्तो
Afterwards, he becomes diseased, as in previous births; but a Brāhmaṇa who does not sell My name is indeed liberated.
