मन्दाग्निज्वरसंयुक्तः पञ्चाशद्वर्षकं तथा । सुवर्णानां शतपलं दत्तवा शुद्धो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Afflicted with weak digestion and fever for fifty years, he is certainly purified by giving a hundred palas of gold.
चतुर्वर्णो वस्त्रहारी गव्यहारी च मानवः । रौप्यमुक्तापहारी च शूद्रद्रव्यापहारकः
A man of the four castes who steals cloth, cows, silver, pearls, or the property of a Śūdra—
वर्षाणां च सहस्रं च बकजातिर्भवेद्ध्रुवम् । मुत्रकुण्डं च वै भुक्त्वा वर्षाणां शतकं तथा
For a thousand years, one is certainly born as a crane; after consuming urine and excrement, one remains for a hundred years likewise.
ततो भवेच्छूद्रजातिर्वर्षाणां शतकं व्रज । कुष्ठव्याधिसमायुक्तो गलितश्चैव पातकी
Then, one becomes of the Śūdra caste for a hundred years, afflicted with leprosy, decayed, and sinful.
ततो भवेद्ब्राह्मणश्च कुष्ठावशेषसंयुतः । स्वर्णषट्पलदानेन व्याधितो मुच्यते शुचिः
After that, one is born as a Brāhmaṇa, still bearing the remnants of leprosy; by giving six palas of gold, the diseased person is purified and freed.
शाकापहारकश्चैव फलापहारकस्तथा । यक्षः पृथिव्यां संभूतो लीलाद्रव्यापहारकः
One who steals vegetables or fruits, or playfully takes others’ property, becomes a Yakṣa born on earth.
वर्षाणां शतकं चैव चाषपक्षी भवेद्ध्रुवम् । ततो भवेत्कृष्णवर्णः शूद्रश्च भारते भुवि
For a hundred years, one is certainly born as a crow; then, one becomes a dark-complexioned Śūdra on the land of Bhārata.
ततो भवेद्ब्राह्मणश्चाप्यधिकाङ्गोऽपि जन्मनि । पुनर्जन्मद्विजो भूत्वा सुच्यते विप्रभोजनात्
After that, one is born as a Brāhmaṇa, though with bodily defects; being reborn as a twice-born and feeding Brāhmaṇas, one is purified.
पक्वद्रव्यापहारी च पशुयोनिर्भवेद्रध्रुवम् । यस्याण्डकोशो गन्धाक्तः कस्तूरी यस्य नाम च
One who steals cooked food is certainly born in an animal womb, whose testicles are smeared with musk and called kastūrī.
सप्तजन्ममृगो भूत्वा ततो भवति गन्धकः । जन्मैकं च ततः शूद्रो गलत्कुष्ठी च जन्मनि
Becoming a deer for seven births, then one becomes a musk animal; after one birth as a Śūdra, afflicted with decaying leprosy.
ततो रोगावशेषेण संयुतो ब्रह्मणः कृशः । स्वर्णषट्पलदानेन मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
Then, with the remnants of disease, one is born as a weak Brāhmaṇa; by giving six palas of gold, one is freed—of this there is no doubt.
धान्यापहारी दुःखी च कृपणः सप्तजन्मसु । विष्ठाकुण्डं वर्षशतं संप्राप्य मुच्यते भिया
One who steals grain is miserable and wretched for seven births; after passing a hundred years in a pit of excrement, he is freed from fear.
स्वर्णापहारी कुष्ठी च मानव पतितो भवेत् । स्वर्णदानप्रतिग्राही विट्कुण्डं च प्रयाति य
A thief of gold becomes a leper and falls from his status as a human; one who accepts or gives stolen gold goes to a pit of excrement.
ततो वर्षशतं भुक्त्वा पुरीषं च दिवानिशम् । ततो व्याघो भवेच्छूद्रो रक्तदोषेण संयुतः
After consuming excrement day and night for a hundred years, then he becomes a Śūdra in Bhārata, afflicted with blood disorders.
तज्जन्मपातकं भुक्त्वा ब्राह्मणश्च पुनर्भवेत् । व्याधिरोषावयुक्तश्च मुच्यते स्वर्णदानतः
Having suffered the sin of that birth, he again becomes a Brāhmaṇa; afflicted with disease and anger, he is freed by the gift of gold.
अगम्यानां च गामी च पूर्वोक्तं रौरवं व्रजेत् । कुम्भीपाकं महाघोरं वर्षाणां चाप्यसंख्यकम्
One who approaches forbidden women goes to the previously mentioned Raurava hell, and to the dreadful Kumbhīpāka for countless years.
ततो भवेत्पुंश्चलीनां योनीनां च कृमिस्तथा । वर्षाणां च सहस्रं च विट्कृमिर्वर्षलक्षकम्
After that, he is born as a worm in the wombs of prostitutes and other women; for a thousand years, as a worm in excrement for a hundred thousand years.
पशुयोनिर्भवेत्तस्मात्तस्माच्च क्षुद्रजन्तवः । ततो भवेन्म्लेच्छजातिस्ततः शूद्राधमस्तदा
From there, he is born in animal wombs, and then as small creatures; after that, he becomes of the mleccha race, and then the lowest of Śūdras.
ततो भवति विप्रश्च व्याधियुक्तो नपुंसकः । पुनश्च ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा तीर्थपर्यटनेन च
Then, he becomes a Brāhmaṇa, afflicted with disease and impotent; again, being born as a Brāhmaṇa, he is purified by pilgrimage.
क्रमेण शुद्धो भवति वंशहीनश्च पातकात् । भोजयित्वा विप्रलक्षं पुत्रं च लभते शुचिः
Gradually, he becomes pure, though his lineage is lost due to sin; by feeding Brāhmaṇas, he obtains a pure son.
मानवः क्रोधयुक्तश्च गर्दभः सप्तजन्मसु । मानवः कलहाविष्टः सप्तजन्मसु वायसः
A man possessed by anger becomes a donkey for seven births; a man seized by quarrels becomes a crow for seven births.
शालग्रामप्रतिग्राही कालसूत्रं व्रजेद्ध्रुवम् । वर्षाणां शतकं चैव शञ्जरीटो भवेत्ततः
One who accepts a Śālagrāma stone as a gift certainly attains the Kālasūtra hell; after a hundred years, he becomes a bird called śañjarīṭa.
लोहचोरश्च निर्वंशो मषीचोरश्च कोकिलः । शुकोऽप्यञ्जनचोरश्च मिष्टचोरः कृमिर्भवेत्
A thief of iron becomes without lineage; a thief of ink becomes a cuckoo; a thief of collyrium becomes a parrot; a thief of sweets becomes a worm.
विप्रद्वेषी गुरुद्वेषी शिरसां च कृमिर्भवेत् । पुंश्चलीं कामिनीं तात भुक्त्वा च रौरवं व्रजेत् ।। ११९ ततो वृथा कृमिश्चैव वर्षाणां शतकं तथा । ततोऽपि विधवा चैव वन्ध्या च सप्तजन्मसु
One who hates a Brahmin or a teacher becomes a worm in the head; O father, one who enjoys a promiscuous woman or a lustful woman goes to the Raurava hell. Then, he becomes a worm in vain for a hundred years; after that, he is born as a widow or a barren woman for seven births.
अस्पृश्या जातिहीना च च्चिन्ननासा भवेत्क्रमात् । रक्तद्रव्यापहारी च रक्तदोषान्वितो भवेत्
She becomes untouchable, deprived of caste, and gradually has a broken nose; one who steals blood-related items becomes afflicted with blood disorders.
आचारहीनो यवनः खञ्जो भवति हिंसकः । अदीक्षितो वङ्खरश्च दुष्टदर्शो च काणकः
One without proper conduct becomes a Yavana, lame, and violent; one without initiation becomes a vaṅkhara, and one with evil vision becomes one-eyed.
अहंकारी कर्णहीनो बधिरो वेदनिन्दकः । वाक्यहर्ता च मूकश्च हिंसकः केशहीनकः
The arrogant one becomes earless, deaf, and a critic of the Vedas; one who steals words becomes mute, violent, and hairless.
मिथ्यावादी श्मश्रुहीनो दुर्वाक्यो दन्तहीनकः । चिह्वाहीनः सत्यहारी दुष्टोऽप्यङ्गुलिहीनकः
A liar becomes without a moustache, foul-mouthed, and toothless; one who steals truth becomes tongueless, wicked, and fingerless.
ग्रन्थापहारी मूर्खश्च व्याधियुक्तो भवेद्ध्रुवम् । अश्वग्राही च तच्चौरो लालामूत्रं व्रजेदिति
One who steals books becomes foolish and certainly afflicted with disease; one who steals horses becomes a thief and attains saliva and urine.
वर्षाणां च शतं स्छित्वा घोटकश्च भवेद्ध्रुवम् । गजचोरो गचग्राही विट्कुण्डे च सहस्रकम्
After spending a hundred years, he certainly becomes a horse; an elephant thief or one who seizes elephants spends a thousand years in the dung pit.
