ततः शुद्धो भवेद्विप्रो भक्षितः कुक्कुरेणै च । गङ्गास्नानेन दानेन स्वर्णस्यापि भवेच्छुचिः
Afterwards, the Brahmin becomes purified, even if eaten by a dog; by bathing in the Ganges and giving gold, he becomes pure.
मार्जारघ्नश्चतुर्वर्णो गङ्गास्नानाद्भवेच्छुचिः । विप्राय लवणं दत्त्वा षट्पलं च प्रमुच्यते
A killer of a cat from any caste becomes pure by bathing in the Ganges; by giving six palas of salt to a Brahmin, he is released.
हत्वा सर्पांश्चतुर्वर्णो मम पादेन चिह्नितान् । ब्रह्महत्याचतुर्थं च पातकं च लभेद्ध्रुवम्
Having killed serpents from any caste, marked by my foot, he certainly attains a fourth of the sin of Brahminicide and a grave offense.
असिपत्रं च नरकं वर्षांणां शतकं तथा । प्राप्नोति यातनायुक्तो विच्छिन्नस्तीक्ष्णधारया
He attains the Asipatra hell for one hundred years; tormented, he is cut by sharp blades.
ततो भवति सर्पश्च डुण्डुभो वर्षपञ्चकम् । नरेण ताडितो दुःखी मृत्योर्भवति पीडितः
Then, he becomes a serpent or a drum for five years; struck by a man, he suffers and is tormented by death.
ततो भवेन्नरः पापी ज्वरयुक्तो हि दुर्बलः । वर्षाणां पञ्चकेनैव मृतो भवति कर्मणा
After that, the man becomes sinful, afflicted with fever and weak; by his actions, he dies within five years.
अश्वघ्नश्च गजघ्नश्च चतुर्वर्णश्च पातकी । वर्षाणां पञ्चकेनैव मृतो भवति कर्मणा
One who kills a horse, an elephant, or a person of the four castes, becomes sinful and, by his actions, dies within five years.
ततो भवति हस्ती च घोटको वा व्रजेश्वर । यावद्विंशतिवर्षाणि ततः शूद्रो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Then, O lord of Vraja, he becomes an elephant or a horse for twenty years; after that, he is certainly born as a Śūdra.
अहंकृती व्याधियुक्तो रौप्यदानेन मुच्यते । ब्राह्मणानां च शतकं भोजयित्वा शुचिर्भवेत्
One who is arrogant and afflicted by disease is freed by giving silver; by feeding a hundred Brāhmaṇas, he becomes pure.
क्षुद्रजन्तुवधेनैव क्षुद्रजन्तुर्भवेन्नरः । वर्षाणां शतकं चैव क्षुद्रव्याधिं तरेत्ततः
By killing small creatures, a man becomes a small creature; for a hundred years, he endures minor diseases, and then is freed from them.
कृपा कार्या सता शश्वतहिंस्रेषु च जन्तुषु । हिंसायां न हि दोषश्च हिंस्राणां च व्रजेश्वर
The virtuous should always show compassion to non-violent creatures; O lord of Vraja, there is no fault in harming the violent ones.
अश्वत्थघ्नश्चतुवंर्णो ब्रह्महत्याचतुर्थकम् । पापं च लभते तात चासिपत्रं व्रजेद्ध्रुवम्
One who cuts down an Aśvattha tree, though of the four castes, incurs a sin equal to a quarter of Brahmin-murder, O dear one, and certainly goes to the sword-leaf hell.
स तीक्ष्णेनापि शस्त्रेण विच्छिन्नश्च दिवानिशम् । वर्षाणां शतकं चैव भुङ्क्ते परमयातनाम्
There, day and night, he is cut by sharp weapons and endures the greatest torment for a hundred years.
ततो भवति वृक्षश्च शालमलिरह्वर्षलक्षकम् । ततो भवति शूद्रश्च च्छिन्नाङ्गो व्याधिसंयुतः
After that, he becomes a tree—Śāla, Malaya, or Arjuna—for a hundred years; then he becomes a Śūdra, deformed and afflicted with disease.
यावज्जीवनपर्यन्तं ततो विप्रो भवेद्ध्रुवम् । व्रणव्याधिसमायुक्तो मुच्यते स्वर्णदानतः
For the rest of his life, he remains thus; then he is certainly born as a Brāhmaṇa, afflicted with ulcers and disease, and is freed by giving gold.
मिथ्यासाक्ष्यप्रदाता च कृतघ्नोऽतिकृतघ्नकः । विश्वासघाती मित्रघ्नो विप्राणां धनहारकः
One who gives false testimony, kills his benefactor, is excessively ungrateful, betrays trust, kills a friend, or steals the wealth of Brāhmaṇas—
शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजी च शूद्राणां शवदाहकः । शूद्राणां सूपकारश्च वृषवाहकपातकी
One who eats Śūdra funeral offerings, cremates the dead of Śūdras, cooks for Śūdras, or commits the sin of leading a bull—
धावको देवलश्चापि चैतेऽतिपापिनस्तथा । कुम्भीपाकं प्रयान्तयेव वर्षाणां च सहस्रकम्
One who runs away or is an outcaste—these, being great sinners, certainly go to the Kumbhīpāka hell for a thousand years.
तत्रैव तप्ततैलेन संतप्तश्च दिवानिशम् । णक्षितो व्यथितश्चैव सर्वाकारेण जन्तुना
There, day and night, he is burned with boiling oil, pierced and tormented in every way as a creature.
गृध्रः कोटिसमस्राणि शतजन्मानि शूकरः । श्वापदः शतजन्मानि शूद्रो रोगी भवेत्ततः
He becomes a vulture for ten million births, a boar for a hundred births, a wild beast for a hundred births, and then a diseased Śūdra.
मन्दाग्निज्वरसंयुक्तः पञ्चाशद्वर्षकं तथा । सुवर्णानां शतपलं दत्तवा शुद्धो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Afflicted with weak digestion and fever for fifty years, he is certainly purified by giving a hundred palas of gold.
चतुर्वर्णो वस्त्रहारी गव्यहारी च मानवः । रौप्यमुक्तापहारी च शूद्रद्रव्यापहारकः
A man of the four castes who steals cloth, cows, silver, pearls, or the property of a Śūdra—
वर्षाणां च सहस्रं च बकजातिर्भवेद्ध्रुवम् । मुत्रकुण्डं च वै भुक्त्वा वर्षाणां शतकं तथा
For a thousand years, one is certainly born as a crane; after consuming urine and excrement, one remains for a hundred years likewise.
ततो भवेच्छूद्रजातिर्वर्षाणां शतकं व्रज । कुष्ठव्याधिसमायुक्तो गलितश्चैव पातकी
Then, one becomes of the Śūdra caste for a hundred years, afflicted with leprosy, decayed, and sinful.
ततो भवेद्ब्राह्मणश्च कुष्ठावशेषसंयुतः । स्वर्णषट्पलदानेन व्याधितो मुच्यते शुचिः
After that, one is born as a Brāhmaṇa, still bearing the remnants of leprosy; by giving six palas of gold, the diseased person is purified and freed.
शाकापहारकश्चैव फलापहारकस्तथा । यक्षः पृथिव्यां संभूतो लीलाद्रव्यापहारकः
One who steals vegetables or fruits, or playfully takes others’ property, becomes a Yakṣa born on earth.
वर्षाणां शतकं चैव चाषपक्षी भवेद्ध्रुवम् । ततो भवेत्कृष्णवर्णः शूद्रश्च भारते भुवि
For a hundred years, one is certainly born as a crow; then, one becomes a dark-complexioned Śūdra on the land of Bhārata.
ततो भवेद्ब्राह्मणश्चाप्यधिकाङ्गोऽपि जन्मनि । पुनर्जन्मद्विजो भूत्वा सुच्यते विप्रभोजनात्
After that, one is born as a Brāhmaṇa, though with bodily defects; being reborn as a twice-born and feeding Brāhmaṇas, one is purified.
पक्वद्रव्यापहारी च पशुयोनिर्भवेद्रध्रुवम् । यस्याण्डकोशो गन्धाक्तः कस्तूरी यस्य नाम च
One who steals cooked food is certainly born in an animal womb, whose testicles are smeared with musk and called kastūrī.
सप्तजन्ममृगो भूत्वा ततो भवति गन्धकः । जन्मैकं च ततः शूद्रो गलत्कुष्ठी च जन्मनि
Becoming a deer for seven births, then one becomes a musk animal; after one birth as a Śūdra, afflicted with decaying leprosy.
