फलं मूलं च यत्किंचिदभक्षयं मनुरब्रवीत् । दग्धान्नं तप्तसौवीरमभक्ष्यं व्रह्मनिर्मितम्
Any fruit or root that is forbidden, so said Manu; burnt food and hot soured drinks are forbidden, as declared by Brahmā.
नालिकेरोदकं कांस्ये ताम्रपात्रे स्थितं मधु । गव्यं च ताम्रपात्रस्थं सर्वं मद्यं घृतं विना
Coconut water in a bronze vessel, honey in a copper vessel, cow products in a copper vessel, and all liquor except for ghee—
ताम्रपात्रे पयःपानमुच्छिष्टे घृतभोजनम् । दुग्धं सलवणं चैव सद्यो गोमांसभक्षणम्
Drinking milk from a copper vessel, eating food that is remnants, milk mixed with salt, and immediately eating cow meat are all prohibited.
अभक्ष्यं मधुमिक्षं च घृतं तैलं गुडं तथा । आर्द्रकं गुडसंयुक्तमभक्ष्यं श्रुतिसंमतम्
Honey, molasses, clarified butter, oil, and jaggery, as well as ginger mixed with jaggery, are all considered unfit for eating according to the scriptures.
पीतशेषजलं चैव माघे च मूलकं तथा । जपादिकं च शयने सदा प्राज्ञः परित्यजेत्
Water left after drinking, radish during the month of Māgha, and recitation or similar acts while lying down should always be avoided by the wise.
द्विर्भोजनं च दिवसे संध्ययोह्भोजनं तथा । भक्ष्यं च रात्रिशेषे च ध्रुवं प्राज्ञः परित्यजेत्
Eating twice in a day, eating at the two twilights, and eating food late at night—these should certainly be abandoned by the wise.
पानीयं पायसं चूर्णं घुतं लवणमेव च । स्वस्तिकं गुडकं चैव क्षीरं तक्रं तथा मधु
Water, rice pudding, powders, clarified butter, salt, svastika (fermented food), jaggery, milk, buttermilk, and honey—
हस्ताद्धस्तगृहीतं च सद्यो गोमांसमेव च । कर्पूरं रौप्यपात्रस्थमभक्ष्यं श्रुतिसंमतम्
—food taken from hand to hand, freshly killed cow meat, and camphor kept in a silver vessel are all considered unfit for eating according to the scriptures.
परिवेषणकारी चेद्भोक्तारं स्पृशते यदि । मभक्ष्यं च तदन्नं च सर्वेषामेव संमतम्
If the server touches the eater while serving, that food is considered unfit for eating by all, according to tradition.
नकुलानां गण्डकानां महिषाणां च पक्षिणाम् । सर्पाणां सूकराणां च गर्दभानां विशेषतः
The flesh of mongooses, moles, buffaloes, birds, snakes, pigs, and especially donkeys—
मर्जाराणां सृगालानां कुक्कुटानां व्रजेश्वर । व्याघ्राणामपि सिंहानां त्याज्यं मांसं नृणां सदा
—as well as the meat of cats, jackals, chickens, tigers, and lions, O king of Vraja, should always be avoided by humans.
जलौकसां च नक्राणां गेधिकानां तथैव च । मण्डूकानां कर्कटानां चुञ्चुकानां च निश्चितम्
The flesh of leeches, crocodiles, hedgehogs, frogs, crabs, and birds with beaks is certainly prohibited.
गवां च चमरीणां च न कलौ मांसभक्षणम् । हस्तिनां घोटकानां च नृणामेव च रक्षसाम्
The meat of cows and yaks should not be eaten in the Kali age, nor that of elephants, horses, humans, or demons.
दंशश्च मशकश्चैव मक्षिका च पिपीनिका । अन्येधां च निषिद्धानां लोके वेदे व्रजेश्वर
Mosquitoes, flies, bees, ants, and other such forbidden creatures are prohibited in the world and in the Vedas, O king of Vraja.
वानराणां भल्लुकानां शरभाणां तथैव च । निषिद्धं मृगनाभीनां गर्दभानां च मांसकम्

मांसमुच्छैःश्रवसकं तस्य दुग्धादिकं तथा । वर्णानां च चतुर्णां चाप्यभक्ष्यं च श्रुतौ श्रुतम्
The meat of the horse Ucchaiḥśravas, its milk and so on, and for all four varṇas, are declared unfit for eating in the scriptures.
अभक्ष्यमार्द्रकं चैव सर्वेषां च रवेर्दिने । पर्युषितं चलं चान्नं विप्राणां दुग्धमेव च
Ginger is unfit for all on Sundays, as is stale or spoiled food, and for Brahmins, milk as well.
वर्णानां च चतुर्णां चाप्यवीरान्नस्य भक्षणम् । तदन्नं च सुरातुल्यं गोमांसाधिकमेव च
For all four varṇas, eating food that is not consecrated is forbidden; such food is considered equal to wine and even worse than cow meat.
अवीरान्नं च योभुङ्क्ते ब्राह्मणो ज्ञानदुर्बलः । पितृदेवार्चनं तस्य निष्फलं मनुरब्रवीत्
If a Brahmin lacking in knowledge eats unconsecrated food, Manu has said that his worship of ancestors and gods becomes fruitless.
ब्रह्माणानां व२ष्णवानामभक्ष्यं मत्स्यमेव च । इतरेषामभक्ष्यं च पञ्चपर्वसु निश्चितम्
Fish is forbidden for Brahmins and Vaishnavas; for others, the five-jointed animals are certainly prohibited.
पितृदेवावशेषे च भक्ष्यं मांसं न दूथितम् । पञ्चपर्वसु त्याज्यं च सर्वेषां मनुरब्रवीत्
Among offerings to ancestors and gods, meat may be eaten if not stale; Manu declared that all must avoid the five-jointed animals.
असंस्कृतं च लवणं तैलं चाभक्ष्यमेव च । भक्ष्यं पवित्रं सर्वेषां व्यञ्जनं वह्निसंस्कृतम्

Honey mixed with ants, cow's milk, and jaggery, or any such item, O dear one, is not to be eaten, as heard in the scriptures.
पक्षिभक्ष्यं कीटभक्ष्यं शृद्धं पक्वफलं तथा । काकभक्ष्यमभक्ष्यं च सर्वेषां द्रव्यमेव च
Bird-eaten, insect-eaten, cooked, or ripe fruit, and food eaten by crows are forbidden for all.
घृतपक्वं तैलपक्वं मिष्टान्नं शूद्रसंस्कृतम् । अभक्ष्यं ब्राह्मणानां च शूद्रभक्ष्यं च पीठकम्
Sweets cooked in ghee or oil, and food prepared by Shudras, are forbidden for Brahmins; the food of Shudras is called pīṭhaka and is not to be eaten.
सर्वेषामशुचीनां च जलमन्नं परित्यजेत् । आशौचान्तात्परदिने शुद्धमेव न संशयः
All should abandon water and food from impure persons; after the period of impurity, only pure food is permitted, without doubt.
विपाकं कर्मणामेव दुष्करं श्रुतिसंमतम् । भक्ष्याभक्ष्यं च कथितं यथाज्ञानं व्रचेश्वर
