एकदा मयि गोलोके रासे नित्यं प्रकुर्वति । आविर्भूता च वामाङ्गाद्बाला षोढशवार्षिकी
Once, while I was eternally performing the rasa dance in Goloka, a sixteen-year-old maiden appeared from my left side.
श्वेतचम्पकवर्णाभा शरच्चन्द्रसमप्रभा । अतीव सुन्दरी रामा रमणीनां परावरा
She shone with the color of white champaka flowers, her radiance equal to the autumn moon; exceedingly beautiful, charming, supreme among women.
ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्या कौमलाङ्गी मनोहरा । वह्निशुद्धांशुकाधाना रत्नाभरणभूषिता
With a gentle, smiling, and pleasant face, delicate limbs, captivating; adorned in garments purified by fire, decorated with jeweled ornaments.
यथा जलदपङ्क्तिश्च बलाकाभिर्तिभूषिता । सिन्दूरबिन्दूना चारुचन्द्रचन्दनबिन्दुभिः
Just as a line of clouds is adorned by cranes, so her beauty was enhanced by lovely marks of sindura, moon-like sandal paste, and other charming spots.
कस्तूरीबिन्दुभिः सार्धं सीमन्तान्धःस्यलोज्ज्वला । अमूल्यरत्ननिर्माणसुस्निग्धकिरणोज्ज्वला
Together with marks of musk, her hair part gleamed brightly; radiant with the soft rays of priceless jewels.
विचित्रैश्च सुचित्रैश्च सुकपोलस्थलोज्ज्वला । खमेन्द्रचञ्चुविजितनासामौक्तिकशोभिता
Her cheeks shone with various and exquisite designs; her nose, adorned with pearls, surpassed the beak of the lord of the skies.
गजेन्द्रगण़्डनिर्मुक्तमुक्ताभूषणभूषिता । शुक्त्या विमुक्तमुक्ताभदन्तपङ्क्तिमनोहरा
She was adorned with pearl ornaments freed from the trunk of the lord of elephants; her beautiful row of teeth resembled pearls released from shells.
वलिताकलिताऽतीव पक्वबिम्बाधरा वरा । शश्वत्पूर्णेन्दुनिन्दास्या पद्मनिन्दितलोचना
Her lips, exceedingly beautiful, were like ripe bimba fruit, with graceful curves; her face always surpassed the full moon, her eyes outshone the lotus.
कृष्णसारनिभोद्भिन्नसुचारुकज्जलोज्ज्वला । अमूल्यरत्ननिर्माणकेयूरकङ्कणोज्ज्वला
Her eyes shone with beautiful kohl, resembling the black antelope; her bracelets and armlets, made of priceless jewels, gleamed brightly.
मणीन्द्रराजराजीभिः शङ्खयुग्मकरोज्जवला । रत्नाङ्गुलीयकैरेभिरमृताङ्गुलिभूषिता
Her hands shone with pairs of conch bracelets and rings of kingly jewels; her fingers were adorned with gem rings and nectar-like beauty.
रत्नेन्द्रराजराजेन क्वणन्मञ्जीररञ्जिता । रत्नपाशकराजीभिः पादाङ्गुलिविराजिता
Adorned by the king of gems among anklets, her steps resounded with tinkling bells; her toes shone, decorated with lines of radiant gem-studded designs.
सुन्दरालक्तरागेण चरणाधःस्थलोज्ज्वला । गजेन्द्रगामिनी रामा कामिनी वामलोचना
Her feet, brightened below by beautiful red lac dye, moved with the gait of a royal elephant; Rāma, the lovely woman with enchanting eyes.
मां ददर्श कटाक्षेण रमणी रमणोत्सुका । रासे संभूय रामा सा दधार पुरतो मम
That woman, eager for union, glanced at me with sidelong looks; in the dance, Rāma herself stood before me, joining in the revel.
तेन राधा समाख्याता बुराविद्भिः प्रपूजिता । प्रहृष्टा प्रकृतिश्चास्यास्तेन प्रकृतिरीश्वरी
By that, she became known as Rādhā, honored by the wise and revered by the aged; delighted, her very nature is thus, and she is the sovereign of all nature.
शक्ता स्यात्सर्वकार्येषु तेन शक्तिः प्रकीर्तिता । सर्वाधारा सर्वरूपा मङ्गलार्हा च सर्वतः
She is capable in all undertakings, and thus is called Śakti; she is the support of all, of every form, and worthy of all auspiciousness.
सर्वमङ्गलदक्षा सा तेन स्यात्सर्वमङ्गला । वैकुण्ठे सा महालक्ष्मीर्मूर्तिभेदे सरस्वती
She is skilled in every auspicious act, and thus is called the source of all good fortune; in Vaikuṇṭha, she is Mahālakṣmī, and in other forms, Sarasvatī.
प्रसूय वेदान्विदिता वेदमाता च सा सदा । सावित्री स च गायत्री धात्री त्रिजगतामपि
She is always known as the mother of the Vedas, having given birth to them; she is Sāvitrī, Gāyatrī, and the nourisher of the three worlds.
पुरा संहृत्य दुर्गं च सा दुर्गा च प्रकीर्तिता । तेजसः सर्वदेवानामाविर्भूता पुरा सती
Long ago, after destroying the fortress, she became known as Durgā; she, Satī, manifested from the brilliance of all the gods.
तेनाऽऽद्या प्रकृतिर्ज्ञेया सर्वासुरविमर्दिती । सर्वानन्दा च सानन्दा दुःखदारिद्रयनाशिनी
Therefore, she is to be known as the primordial nature, the subduer of all demons; she is all-blissful, brings joy, and destroys sorrow and poverty.
शत्रुणां भयदात्रौ च भक्तानां भयहारिणौ । दक्षकन्या सती का च शैलजातेति पार्वती
She brings fear to enemies and removes fear from devotees; she is Satī, daughter of Dakṣa, and also Pārvatī, born of the mountain.
सर्वाधारस्वरूपा सा कलया सा वसुंधरा । कलया तुलसी गङ्गा कलया सर्वयोषितः
She is the very form of the support of all; by her portion, she is the earth; by her portion, Tulasī and Gaṅgā; by her portion, all women.
सृष्टिं करोमि च यया तात शक्त्या पुनः पुनः । दृष्ट्वा तां रासमध्यस्थां मम क्रीडा
O dear one, by her power I create the world again and again; seeing her in the midst of the dance, my play—
बभूव सुचिरं तात यावद्वै ब्रह्मणः शतम् । अत्यद्भुतं कौतुकं च महाश्रृङ्गारमीप्सितम्
O dear one, that play continued for a long time, for a hundred years of Brahmā; it was most wondrous, astonishing, and filled with supreme passion.
तयोर्द्वयोर्धर्मराशिः सुस्राव रासमण़्डले । तस्मान्मनोहरं जज्ञे नामनाकारसरोवरम्
From those two, a stream of virtue flowed in the circle of the dance; from that, a most enchanting, formless lake was born.
पपात धर्मधाराऽधो वेगेन विश्वगोलके । बभूव जलबूर्णं च ब्रह्माण्डानां च गोलकम्
A stream of virtue fell below with force into the cosmic sphere; it became filled with water, forming the globe of the universes.
जलपूर्ण पुरा सर्व शृष्टिशून्यं व्रजेश्वर । श्रुङ्गारान्ते च तस्यां च वीर्याधानं मया कृतम्
Formerly, O lord of Vraja, when all was filled with water and creation was absent, at the end of the play, I deposited my seed there.
दधार गर्भ सा राधा यावद्वै ब्रह्मणाः शतम् । सुस्राव सा तदन्ते च डिम्भं च परमाद्भुतम्
Rādhā bore the embryo for a hundred years of Brahmā; at the end, she brought forth a most wondrous child.
चुकोप देवी तं दृष्ट्वा रुरोद विषसाद सा । पादेन प्रेरयामास तमधो विश्वगोलके
Seeing that, the goddess became angry, she wept and was distressed; with her foot, she cast it down into the cosmic sphere below.
स पपात जले तात सर्वाधारो महान्विराट् । दृष्ट्वाऽपत्यं जलस्थं च मया शप्ता च सा पुरा
O dear one, the great Virāṭ, the universal support, fell into the waters; seeing her child in the water, she, whom I had formerly cursed—
अनपत्या च सा राथा मच्छापेन पुरा विभो । तेन प्रसूताः क्रमतो दुर्गा लक्ष्मीः सरस्वती
That Rāthā, O Lord, was rendered childless by my curse in the past; therefore, in due order, Durgā, Lakṣmī, and Sarasvatī were born from her.
