उत्थाय वामहस्तेन यस्तोयं पिबति द्विजः
If a twice-born drinks water with his left hand after rising—
अनिवेद्यं हरेरन्नं भुक्तशेषं च नित्यशः
Food not offered to Hari, or always eating leftovers, is forbidden.
वानिङ्गणफलं चैव गोमांसं कार्त्तिके स्मृतम्
Speech, betel nut, and fruit, as well as beef, are considered prohibited in the month of Kārtika.
श्वेतवर्णं च तालं च मसूरं मत्स्यमेव च
White-colored palm fruit, tāla fruit, lentils, and fish are also included.
मत्स्यांश्च कामतो भुक्त्वा सोपवासस्त्र्यहं वसेत्
If one eats fish out of desire, one should observe a fast and reside for three days.
प्रतिपत्सु च कूष्माण्डमभक्ष्यं ह्यर्थनाशनम्
On the lunar day of Pratipat, pumpkin is unfit to eat, for it brings about loss of wealth.
अभक्ष्यं च पटोलं च शत्रुवृद्धिकरं परम् 1.27.
Patola gourd is also prohibited, as it greatly causes the increase of enemies.
कलङ्ककारणं चैव पंचम्यां बिल्वभक्षणम्
Eating bilva fruit on the fifth lunar day causes blemish.
रोगवृद्धिकरं चैव नराणां तालभक्षणम्
For men, eating tāla fruit causes an increase of disease.
नारिकेलफलं भक्ष्यमष्टम्यां बुद्धिनाशनम्
Eating coconut fruit on the eighth lunar day destroys intelligence.
एकादश्यां तथा शिम्बी द्वादश्यां पूतिका तथा
On the eleventh day, beans are prohibited; on the twelfth, putikā beans likewise.
चतुर्दश्यां माषभक्ष्यं महापापकरं परम्
On the fourteenth day, eating black gram is considered a great sin.
गृहिणां प्रोक्षितं मांसं भक्ष्यमन्यदिनेषु च
For householders, meat that has been sprinkled with water is permitted on other days.
प्रशस्तं सार्षपं तैलं पक्वतैलं च नारद
Mustard oil and well-cooked oil are praised, O Nārada.
रवौ श्राद्धे व्रताहे च दुष्टं स्त्रीतिलतैलकम्
On days of śrāddha, during vows, and on Sundays, oil pressed by women is impure.
निषिद्धं शयनं चैव कूर्ममांसं च मन्त्रितम्
Sleeping is forbidden, as is turtle meat that has been consecrated with mantras.
रात्रौ च दधि भक्ष्यं च शयनं सन्ध्ययोर्दिने 1.27.
At night, curd is prohibited, as is sleeping during the time of twilight.
उदक्यवीरयोरन्नं पुंश्चल्यन्नमभक्षकम्
Food from a woman who draws water, or from a promiscuous woman, is unfit to eat.
अभक्ष्यान्नं च विप्रर्षे यदन्नं वृषलीपतेः
O best of sages, food that belongs to a low-caste woman is also prohibited.
अग्रदानिद्विजान्नं च चिकित्साकारकस्य च
Food given first to a non-brāhmaṇa, or from one who practices medicine, is also prohibited.
मूले मृगे भाद्रपदे मांसं गोमांसतुल्यकम्
At the root of the deer in the month of Bhādrapada, meat is considered equal to cow's flesh.
कृत्वा तु मैथुनं क्षौरं यो देवांस्तर्पयेत्पितॄन्
Whoever, after engaging in sexual union or shaving, offers satisfaction to the gods and ancestors—
यत्कर्त्तव्यमकर्त्तव्यं यद्भोज्यं यदभोज्यकम्
Whatever ought to be done or not done, whatever is fit to be eaten or not eaten—
नारद उवाच भवान्ब्रह्मस्वरूपं च वद ब्रह्मनिरूपणम्
Nārada said: Please describe the true nature of Brahman and the definition of Brahman.
प्रभो किं ब्रह्म साकारं किं निराकारमीश्वर
O Lord, is Brahman with form or formless, O Master?
किं वा दृश्यमदृश्यं वा लिप्तं देहिषु किं न वा
Is it visible or invisible, attached to embodied beings or not?
ब्रह्मातिरिक्ता प्रकृतिः किं वा ब्रह्मस्वरूपिणी
Is Prakṛti distinct from Brahman, or is she of the same nature as Brahman?
प्राधान्यं तस्य सृष्टौ च द्वयोर्मध्ये वरं परम्
Which of the two holds supremacy in creation, and which is the highest choice between them?
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पञ्चवक्त्रः प्रहस्य च
Hearing Nārada’s words, the five-faced one smiled—
महादेव उवाच सुदुर्लभं च वेदेषु पुराणेषु च नारद
Mahādeva said: O Nārada, this is extremely rare in the Vedas and Purāṇas.
