व्रते तपसि धर्मे च न मनो गृहकर्मणि । न गुरौ न च देवेषु जारे स्निग्धं च चञ्चलम्
Her mind is not in vows, austerity, righteousness, or household duties; not in elders or gods, but is attached and fickle toward her lover.
स्त्रीजातित्रिविधानां च कथा च कथिता मया । भक्तानां त्रिविधानां च लक्षणं श्रूयतामिति
I have described the three kinds of women; now listen to the characteristics of the three kinds of devotees.
तृणशय्यारतो भक्तो मन्नामगुणकीर्तिषु । मनो निवेशयेत्त्यक्त्वा संसारसुखकारणम्
The devotee delights in a bed of grass, immerses his mind in my name, virtues, and glories, abandoning all causes of worldly happiness.
व्यायते मत्पदाब्जं च पूजयेद्भक्तिभावतः । अहैतुकीं तस्य देवाः संकल्परहितस्य च
He strives to worship my lotus feet with devotion, without motive; for such a one, the gods grant uncaused blessings.
सर्वसिद्धिंन वाञ्छन्ति तेऽणिमादिकमीप्सितम् । ब्रह्मत्वममरत्वं वा सुरत्वं सुखकारणम्
They do not desire any perfection, not even the powers like becoming minute, nor do they seek Brahmahood, immortality, or the pleasures of the gods.
दास्यं विना नहीच्छन्ति सालोक्यादिचतुष्टयम् । नैव निर्वाणमुक्तिं च सुधापानमभीप्सितम्
They desire nothing but service, not even the four types of liberation such as residing in my world; nor do they wish for final liberation or the drinking of nectar.
वाञ्छन्ति निश्चिलां भक्तिं मदीयामतुलामपि । स्त्रीपुंविभेदो नास्त्येव सर्वजीवेषु भिन्नता
They desire unwavering devotion to me, even the most incomparable; there is no distinction of male or female, nor any difference among all living beings.
तेषां सिद्धेश्वराणां च प्रवराणां व्रजेश्वर । क्षुत्पिपासादिकं निद्रालोभमोहादिकं रिपुम्
Among those perfected lords, O king of Vraja, hunger, thirst, sleep, greed, delusion, and other faults are abandoned.
त्पक्त्वा दिवानिशं मां च ध्यायन्ते च दिगम्बराः । समद्भक्तोत्तमो नन्द श्रूयतां मध्यमादिकम्
Having given these up, day and night they meditate on me, wearing only the directions as their garment; O Nanda, now hear about the best among the middle devotees.
नाऽऽसक्तः कर्मसु गृही पूर्वप्राक्तनतः शुचिः । करोति सततं चैव पूर्वकर्मनिकृन्तनम्
The householder, unattached to actions, pure due to previous merit, always acts to cut off past karma.
न करोत्यपरं वत्नात्संकल्परहितः स च । सर्वं कृष्णस्य यत्किंचिन्नाहं कर्ता च कर्मणः
He does not perform other actions out of desire; he is free from motives, and whatever he does, he considers as done for Krishna, not himself.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा सततं चिन्तयेदिति । न्यूनभक्तश्च तन्न्यूनः स च प्राकृतिकः श्रुतौ
By action, mind, and speech, he always contemplates thus; he whose devotion is less is called lesser, and is considered ordinary in the scriptures.
यमं वा यमदूतं वा स्वप्नेऽपि न च पश्यति । पुरुषाणां सहस्रं च पूर्वभक्तः सुद्धरेत्
He does not see Yama or Yama's messengers, not even in a dream; one who has previously served can purify a thousand men.
पुंसां शतं मध्यमश्च तच्चतुर्थं च प्राकृतः । भक्तश्च त्रिविधस्तात कथितश्च तवाऽऽज्ञया
The middle devotee purifies a hundred men, and the ordinary devotee purifies a quarter of that; O dear one, three types of devotees have been described to you by your command.
ब्रह्माण्डरचनाख्यानं श्रूयतां सावधानतः । ब्रह्माण्डरचनार्थं च भक्ता जानन्ति यत्नतः
Let the account of the creation of the universe be heard with attention; devotees strive to understand the purpose of the universe's creation.
मुनयश्च सुराः सन्तः किंचिज्जानन्ति दुःखतः । जानामि विश्वं सर्वार्थ ब्रह्माऽऽनन्तो
The sages, the gods, and the virtuous know only a little, and with difficulty; I know the whole universe and all its meanings, O endless Brahma.
धर्मः सनत्कुमारश्च नरनारायणावृषी । कपिलश्च गणेशश्च दुर्गा लक्ष्मीः सरस्वती
Dharma, Sanatkumara, the sages Nara and Narayana, Kapila, Ganesha, Durga, Lakshmi, and Sarasvati,
वेदाश्च वेदमाता च सर्वज्ञा राधिका स्वयम् । एते जानन्ति विश्वार्थ नान्यो जानाति कश्चन
The Vedas, the mother of the Vedas, and omniscient Radhika herself—these alone know the meaning of the universe; no one else knows.
वैषम्यार्थ च सुधियः सर्वे विज्ञातुमक्षमाः । नित्याकाशो यथाऽऽत्मा च तथा नित्या दिशो दश
All wise men are incapable of knowing the meaning of diversity; just as space is eternal, so too are the ten directions eternal.
यथा नित्या च प्रकृतिस्तथैव विश्वगोलकः । गोलोकश्च यथा नित्यस्तथा वैकुण्ठ एव च
Just as Prakriti is eternal, so is the cosmic sphere; and just as Goloka is eternal, so too is Vaikuntha.
एकदा मयि गोलोके रासे नित्यं प्रकुर्वति । आविर्भूता च वामाङ्गाद्बाला षोढशवार्षिकी
Once, while I was eternally performing the rasa dance in Goloka, a sixteen-year-old maiden appeared from my left side.
श्वेतचम्पकवर्णाभा शरच्चन्द्रसमप्रभा । अतीव सुन्दरी रामा रमणीनां परावरा
She shone with the color of white champaka flowers, her radiance equal to the autumn moon; exceedingly beautiful, charming, supreme among women.
ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्या कौमलाङ्गी मनोहरा । वह्निशुद्धांशुकाधाना रत्नाभरणभूषिता
With a gentle, smiling, and pleasant face, delicate limbs, captivating; adorned in garments purified by fire, decorated with jeweled ornaments.
यथा जलदपङ्क्तिश्च बलाकाभिर्तिभूषिता । सिन्दूरबिन्दूना चारुचन्द्रचन्दनबिन्दुभिः
Just as a line of clouds is adorned by cranes, so her beauty was enhanced by lovely marks of sindura, moon-like sandal paste, and other charming spots.
कस्तूरीबिन्दुभिः सार्धं सीमन्तान्धःस्यलोज्ज्वला । अमूल्यरत्ननिर्माणसुस्निग्धकिरणोज्ज्वला
Together with marks of musk, her hair part gleamed brightly; radiant with the soft rays of priceless jewels.
विचित्रैश्च सुचित्रैश्च सुकपोलस्थलोज्ज्वला । खमेन्द्रचञ्चुविजितनासामौक्तिकशोभिता
Her cheeks shone with various and exquisite designs; her nose, adorned with pearls, surpassed the beak of the lord of the skies.
गजेन्द्रगण़्डनिर्मुक्तमुक्ताभूषणभूषिता । शुक्त्या विमुक्तमुक्ताभदन्तपङ्क्तिमनोहरा
She was adorned with pearl ornaments freed from the trunk of the lord of elephants; her beautiful row of teeth resembled pearls released from shells.
वलिताकलिताऽतीव पक्वबिम्बाधरा वरा । शश्वत्पूर्णेन्दुनिन्दास्या पद्मनिन्दितलोचना
Her lips, exceedingly beautiful, were like ripe bimba fruit, with graceful curves; her face always surpassed the full moon, her eyes outshone the lotus.
कृष्णसारनिभोद्भिन्नसुचारुकज्जलोज्ज्वला । अमूल्यरत्ननिर्माणकेयूरकङ्कणोज्ज्वला
Her eyes shone with beautiful kohl, resembling the black antelope; her bracelets and armlets, made of priceless jewels, gleamed brightly.
मणीन्द्रराजराजीभिः शङ्खयुग्मकरोज्जवला । रत्नाङ्गुलीयकैरेभिरमृताङ्गुलिभूषिता
Her hands shone with pairs of conch bracelets and rings of kingly jewels; her fingers were adorned with gem rings and nectar-like beauty.
