O Lord of Vraja, by reciting this and offering obeisance, one enjoys all the fruits of austerities and vows, with her permission.
The Blessed Lord said: The householder who always worships the twice-born and the gods, who follows his own duty, and who upholds the fourfold order daily—
All the gods and others fulfill the wishes of such a householder; but if he does not honor guests, the householder is always impure.
At the time of ritual and when a guest arrives, the ancestors, deities, and all come to the householder, just as cows come to a watering place.
A guest, hungry, arrives with effort in the evening; after being honored and receiving blessings, he departs from the householder's home.
If the householder does not honor a guest, he becomes sinful; he certainly acquires the sin produced in the three worlds—there is no doubt.
If a guest, his hope broken, leaves the house, then his ancestors, gods, and the sacred fires also depart.
Guests who leave a householder's home disappointed depart just as do women-slayers, cow-killers, ingrates, and brahmins who violate their teacher's bed.
He incurs the same fault as one who does not honor a guest; giving away his own merit, he departs bearing the householder's sin.
Therefore, having performed all service to the gods and others with pure intent, and having provided for those he supports, the knower of dharma eats afterwards.
If a man has no mother at home, and his wife is unchaste, he should go to the forest; a home is more sorrowful than the forest for him.
An evil wife always hates her husband, looks at him as if he were poison, denies him food, and constantly rebukes him.
Even if honored like a sage, such a sinful woman always treats him with contempt, considering him as worthless as grass.
Burned by the fire of harsh words, he lives as if dead, having obtained a wicked wife for the rest of his life.
Now hear the proper conduct of householder women, as it has been heard: a housewife is devoted to her husband and honors gods and brahmins.
She is pure, rises early in the morning, and after bowing to her husband and the gods, she makes auspicious offerings in the courtyard with cow dung and water.
Having completed her household duties and bathed, the virtuous wife returns home; she bows to the gods, the Brahmin, and her husband, and then worships the household deities.
After thoroughly finishing her household tasks and feeding her husband, the virtuous wife honors any guest, and then herself eats happily.
A father is honored by his sons, and a teacher by his disciples; by their command, the son and disciple act as servants.
A son or disciple should not command the father or teacher in any task; to father and teacher, one must always offer everything.
One should never regard the teacher or father as an ordinary man; if one does so, he certainly incurs the sin of killing a Brahmin.
One should worship the mother with devotion, and even more so the father; and the supreme teacher should be worshipped with the highest devotion.
The father, mother, teacher, wife, disciple, and son are always to be cared for; the helpless, the sister, and the maiden, especially those dear to the teacher, must always be supported.
Thus, O dear one, the supreme duty of all has been described; women of pure conduct, all of them devoted to their husbands.
All castes were originally created as one by Brahma; all women are portions of Prakriti, pure and superior to the learned.
By the curse of the daughter of Kedara, that dharma was destroyed; then, out of anger, the Creator fashioned the being Kṛtyā and woman.
Kṛtyā and woman were created by Brahma in three kinds: the highest, the middle, and the lowest.
The highest is devoted to her husband, possessed of some righteousness; even at the end of her life, she does not bring disgrace by taking a lover.
She worships her husband as well as the gods, Brahmins, and guests; she observes vows and fasts, and performs all acts of worship.
Protected by her teacher with care, she avoids a lover out of fear; the middling type is artificial, and serves her husband to some extent.
