O Lord of Vraja, the duties of Brahmins and Vaishnavas have been described, as stated in the Purāṇas and also in the four Vedas.
For Kshatriyas, worship of Brahmins and of Nārāyaṇa is prescribed, as well as the protection of the kingdom and fearlessness in battle.
Constant giving to Brahmins, protection of those who seek refuge, caring for subjects as for one's own children, and safeguarding the suffering.
Skill in weapons and missiles, valor in battle, asceticism, and performance of righteous acts—these should be diligently undertaken with joy.
One should always protect the learned, those skilled in policy and weapons, appointing them in assemblies, always surrounded by the virtuous.
One should diligently protect the four divisions of the army—elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry—being renowned and powerful.
One who is challenged in battle or in giving charity should not turn away; and if one gives up their life in battle, for them heaven brings lasting fame.
For Vaiśyas, trade is prescribed by the Lord, as well as agriculture and tending cattle; for Brāhmaṇas, worship of the gods, giving, austerity, and observance of vows.
For Śūdras, daily service to Brāhmaṇas is prescribed as their duty; if a Śūdra engages in agriculture or accepts wealth from it, he falls to the state of an outcaste.
A vulture for ten million births, a boar for a hundred births, a wild beast for a hundred births—such is the fate of a Śūdra who takes wealth from a Brāhmaṇa.
A Śūdra who approaches a Brāhmaṇa woman, or his own mother, is a great sinner; he is cooked in the hell called Kumbhīpāka for as many ages as a hundred of Brahmā.
In Kumbhīpāka, in boiling oil, he is devoured day and night by serpents; from the blows of Yama, he utters distorted sounds.
After that, he is born in the womb of an outcaste for seven births as a sinner; for seven births as a serpent, and for seven births as a leech.
For ten million births he is born as a worm in excrement; for seven births he becomes a genital worm in the wombs of unchaste women.
From pride, he becomes a wound-worm, a sinner for seven births; thus he wanders from womb to womb, never again born as a human.
Now hear from my mouth the duty of renunciants: by merely taking up the staff, a man becomes like Nārāyaṇa.
Burning up previous actions and cutting off others' deeds, he contemplates me and attains my abode.
By the touch of a renunciant’s feet, the earth is instantly purified; just as the holy places are purified by the presence of a Vaiṣṇava in Vraja.
By touching a renunciant, a man becomes free from sin; by feeding a renunciant, one obtains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice.
By bowing or even seeing them willingly, one gains the fruit of a Rājasūya sacrifice; the same fruit is gained from renunciants, ascetics, and celibates.
A renunciant, hungry in the evening, goes to the house of a householder; whether the food is good or bad, whatever is given should not be rejected.
He should not ask for sweet food, nor should he become angry; he should not accept wealth, and should wear a single garment, free from desires.
He should be the same in cold and heat, free from greed and delusion; staying in one place for a single night, he should go elsewhere in the morning.
If, after accepting a ride or carrying goods, or taking a householder's wealth, he builds a house and lives comfortably, he falls from his own duty.
He who, having taken up the life of a renunciant, engages in agriculture, trade, or improper livelihood, becomes a renunciant devoid of proper conduct and strays beyond his own duty.
If one performs either unwholesome or wholesome acts that are not his own prescribed duty, he is cast out from his own dharma and becomes an object of ridicule.
A Brahmin woman who is widowed and always free from desire, who eats only once at the end of the day, should always subsist on sacrificial food.
She does not wear fine garments, fragrant substances, or perfumed oils, nor does she adorn herself with garlands, sandalwood, conch, vermilion, or ornaments.
Having abandoned such things, she should wear simple clothes and always remember Nārāyaṇa, and she should serve Nārāyaṇa at all times.
She should constantly utter His name, not out of devotion to any other; and she should always regard men as she would a son, in accordance with dharma.
