अन्नाहारी यथा काले गृही च गृहिणीयुतः
Some eat food at the proper time, and some are householders with their wives.
हविष्यान्नं ब्राह्मणानां प्रशस्तं गृहिणां सदा
Cooked sacrificial food is always commendable for Brahmins and their wives.
अन्नं विष्ठा जलं मूत्रं यद्विष्णोरनिवेदितम्
Food, excrement, water, and urine not offered to Vishnu are like filth.
ब्राह्मणः कामतोऽन्नं च यो भुङ्क्ते हरिवासरे
A Brahmin who eats food out of desire on Hari's day—
न भोक्तव्यं न भोक्तव्यं न भोक्तव्यं च नारद
It must not be eaten, it must not be eaten, it must not be eaten, O Nārada.
गृही शैवश्च शाक्तश्च ब्राह्मणो ज्ञानदुर्बलः
A householder, a devotee of Śiva, a devotee of Śakti, or a brāhmaṇa lacking in knowledge—
कृमिभिः शालिमानैश्च भक्षितस्तत्र तिष्ठति 1.27.
—that food, eaten by worms or infested with insects, remains there.
जन्माष्टमीदिने रामनवमीदिवसे हरेः
On the eighth day of the lunar month, on Rāma’s birthday, or on the day of Hari’s birth—
उपवासासमर्थश्च फलं मूलं जलं पिबेत्
—one who is unable to fast may consume fruits, roots, or drink water.
सकृद्भुङ्क्ते हविष्यान्नं विष्णोर्नैवेद्यमेव च
If one eats sacrificial food or only the offerings made to Viṣṇu, even once—
एकादश्यामनाहारं गृही विप्रश्च भारते
—on Ekādaśī, a householder or a brāhmaṇa in Bhārata should abstain from food.
गृहिणां शैवशाक्तानामिदमुक्तं च नारद
This has been stated, O Nārada, regarding householders who are devotees of Śiva or Śakti.
नित्यं नैवेद्यभोजो यः श्रीविष्णोस्स हि वैष्णवः
He who always partakes of the offerings to Śrī Viṣṇu—he alone is truly a Vaiṣṇava.
वाञ्छन्ति तस्य संस्पर्शं तीर्थान्यखिलदेवताः
All holy places and all the deities desire his touch.
द्विः स्विन्नमन्नं पृथुकं शुद्धं देशविशेषके
Twice-washed rice, flattened rice, or pure food from a special region—
अभक्ष्यं वै यतीनां च विधवाब्रह्मचारिणाम्
—is forbidden for ascetics, widows, and those observing celibacy.
ताम्बूलं विधवास्त्रीणां यतीनां ब्रह्मचारिणाम् 1.27.
Betel leaf is forbidden for widows, ascetics, and those observing celibacy.
सर्वेषां ब्राह्मणानां यदभक्ष्यं शृणु नारद
Hear, O Nārada, what is forbidden to be eaten by all brāhmaṇas.
ताम्रपात्रे पयःपानमुच्छिष्टे घृतभोजनम्
Drinking milk from a copper vessel, eating clarified butter from another’s leavings—
नारिकेलोदकं कांस्ये ताम्रपात्रे स्थितं लघु
Coconut water in a bronze vessel, or kept in a copper vessel, is light (not nourishing).
उत्थाय वामहस्तेन यस्तोयं पिबति द्विजः
If a twice-born drinks water with his left hand after rising—
अनिवेद्यं हरेरन्नं भुक्तशेषं च नित्यशः
Food not offered to Hari, or always eating leftovers, is forbidden.
वानिङ्गणफलं चैव गोमांसं कार्त्तिके स्मृतम्
Speech, betel nut, and fruit, as well as beef, are considered prohibited in the month of Kārtika.
श्वेतवर्णं च तालं च मसूरं मत्स्यमेव च
White-colored palm fruit, tāla fruit, lentils, and fish are also included.
मत्स्यांश्च कामतो भुक्त्वा सोपवासस्त्र्यहं वसेत्
If one eats fish out of desire, one should observe a fast and reside for three days.
प्रतिपत्सु च कूष्माण्डमभक्ष्यं ह्यर्थनाशनम्
On the lunar day of Pratipat, pumpkin is unfit to eat, for it brings about loss of wealth.
अभक्ष्यं च पटोलं च शत्रुवृद्धिकरं परम् 1.27.
Patola gourd is also prohibited, as it greatly causes the increase of enemies.
कलङ्ककारणं चैव पंचम्यां बिल्वभक्षणम्
Eating bilva fruit on the fifth lunar day causes blemish.
रोगवृद्धिकरं चैव नराणां तालभक्षणम्
For men, eating tāla fruit causes an increase of disease.
नारिकेलफलं भक्ष्यमष्टम्यां बुद्धिनाशनम्
Eating coconut fruit on the eighth lunar day destroys intelligence.
