एतत्ते कथितं नन्द ह्याख्यानं पुण्यदं शुभम् । एतच्छ्रु त्वा तु निष्पापो निष्कलङ्की नरो भवेत्
O Nanda, this auspicious and meritorious story has been told to you; by hearing this, a person becomes free of sin and without blemish.
धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं सर्वसंपत्करं परम् । शोकापनोदनं हर्षकरं मर्वत्र मङ्गलम्
It brings blessedness, fame, long life, and all supreme prosperity; it removes sorrow, brings joy, and is auspicious everywhere.
त्यज शोकं सदा नन्द गृहं व्रज व्रजेश्वर । ब्रूहि सर्वं यशोदां च मत्प्रसूं गोपिकागणम्
Always abandon sorrow, O Nanda; go home, O lord of Vraja; tell everything to Yaśodā, my mother, and to the group of cowherd women.
बोधयिष्यसि सर्वां तां स्त्रीजातिं शोकसंयुताम् । सदीयज्ञानदत्तेन हर्षयुक्तः सदा भव
You will enlighten all those women afflicted by sorrow; always remain joyful, endowed with the knowledge I have given.
इति श्रीब्रह्मo महाo श्रीकृष्णजन्मखo उत्तo नारदनाo ताराहरणं नामैकाशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eighty-first chapter, named 'The Abduction of Tārā,' in the great Brahmavaivarta Purāṇa, in the section on the birth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as spoken by Nārada.
अथ द्व्यशीतितमोऽध्यायः नन्द उवाच श्रुतं सर्वं महाभाग दुःस्वप्नं कथय प्रभो । उवाच तं वै भगवाञ्छ्रूयतामिति तद्वचः
Chapter eighty-two begins. Nanda said: 'All has been heard, O greatly fortunate one; tell me about the evil dream, O Lord.' The Blessed Lord spoke to him: 'Let this be heard.'
श्रीभगवानुवाच स्वप्ने हसति यो हर्षाद्विवाहं यदि पश्यति । नर्तनं गीतमिष्टं च विपत्तिस्तस्य निश्चितम्
The Blessed Lord said: If one laughs with joy in a dream, or sees a marriage, or sees dancing, singing, or something pleasing, misfortune is certain for him.
दन्ता यस्य विबीड्यन्ते विचरन्तं च पश्यति । धनहानिर्भवेत्तस्य पीडा चापि शरीरजा
If someone's teeth are broken in a dream, or he sees himself wandering, loss of wealth and bodily suffering will befall him.
अम्यङ्गितस्तु तैलेन यो गच्छेद्दक्षिणां दिशम् । खरोष्ट्रमहिषारूढो मृत्युस्तस्य न संशयः
If, anointed with oil, one goes southward in a dream, or rides a donkey, camel, or buffalo, there is no doubt that death will come to him.
स्वपने कर्णे जपापुष्पमशोकं करवीरकम् । विपत्तिस्तस्य तैलं च लवणं यदि पश्यति
If in a dream one sees a hibiscus flower, ashoka, or oleander in the ear, or sees oil or salt, misfortune will come to him.
नग्नां कृष्णां छिन्ननासां शूद्रस्य विधवां तथा । कपर्दकं तालफलं दृष्ट्वा शोकमवाप्नुयात्
Seeing a naked woman, a dark-skinned woman, a woman with a severed nose, a widow of a Shudra, a cowrie shell, or a palm fruit brings sorrow.
स्वप्ने रुष्टं ब्राह्मणं च ब्राह्मणीं कोपसंयुताम् । विपत्तिश्च भवेत्तस्य लक्ष्मीर्याति गृहाद्ध्रुवम्
If one sees an angry Brahmin or a Brahmin woman filled with wrath in a dream, misfortune will befall him and Lakshmi will surely depart from his home.
वनपुष्पं रक्तपुष्पं पलाशं च सुपुष्पितम् । कार्पासं शुक्लवस्त्रं च दृष्ट्वा दुःखमवाप्नुयात्
Seeing forest flowers, red flowers, a blossoming palasha tree, cotton, or white cloth brings suffering.
गायन्तीं च हसन्तीं च कृष्णाम्बरधरां स्त्रियम् । दृष्ट्वा कृष्णां च विधवां नरो मृत्युमवाप्नुयात्
If a man sees a woman singing or laughing, dressed in black garments, or sees a dark-skinned widow, he will encounter death.
देवता यत्र नृत्यन्ति गायन्ति च हसन्ति च । आस्फोटयन्ति धावन्ति तस्य देहो मरिष्यति
Wherever deities are seen dancing, singing, laughing, clapping, or running, the body of that person will perish.
वान्तं मूत्रं पुरीषं च वैद्यं रौप्यं सुवर्णकम् । प्रत्यक्षमथवा स्वप्ने जीवितं दशमावधि
If one sees vomit, urine, excrement, a physician, silver, or gold directly or in a dream, his life will end within ten days.
कृष्णाम्बरधरां नारीं कृष्णमाल्यानुलेपनाम् । उपगूहति यः स्वप्ने तस्य मृत्युर्भविष्यति
Whoever embraces in a dream a woman wearing black garments, adorned with black garlands and ointments, will face death.
मृतवत्सं च मुण्डं च मृगस्य च नरस्य च । यः प्राप्तोत्यस्थिमालां च विपत्तिस्तस्य निश्चितम्
Whoever obtains a dead calf, a shaven head, the bones of an animal or a man, or a garland of bones, will certainly meet with misfortune.
रथं खरोष्ट्रसंयुक्तमेकाकी योऽधिरोहयेत् । तत्रस्थोऽपि च जागर्ति मृत्युरेव न संशयः
If someone alone mounts a chariot drawn by donkeys or camels, even if he remains awake there, death is certain, without doubt.
अम्यङ्गिस्तु हविषा क्षीरेण मधुनाऽपि च । तक्रेणापि गुडेनैव पीडा तस्य विनिश्चितम्
If one is smeared with sacrificial offerings, milk, honey, buttermilk, or jaggery, suffering is assured for him.
रक्ताम्बरधरां नारीं रक्तमाल्यानुलेपराम् । उपगूहति यः स्वप्ने तस्य व्याधिर्विनिश्चितम्
Whoever embraces in a dream a woman dressed in red garments, adorned with red garlands and ointments, will certainly suffer from disease.
पतितान्नखरेशांश्च निर्वाणाङ्गारमेव च । भस्मबूर्णां चितां दृष्ट्वा लभते मृत्युमेव च
Seeing fallen nails, ashes from extinguished fire, or a funeral pyre covered with ashes, one attains death.
श्मशानं शुष्ककाष्ठं च तृणानि लोहमेव च । शमीं च किं चित्कृष्णाश्वं दृष्ट्वा दुःखं लभेद्ध्रुवम्
Seeing a cremation ground, dry wood, grass, iron, a shami tree, or a black horse, one will surely experience sorrow.
पादुकां फलकं रक्तं पुष्पमाल्यं भयानकम् । माषं मसूरं मुद्गं वा दृष्ट्वा सद्यो व्रणं लभेत्
Seeing red sandals, a red board, a frightening flower garland, or seeing black gram, lentils, or mung beans, one immediately gets a wound.
कटकं सरठं काकं भल्लूकं वानरं गवम् । पूयं गात्रमलं स्वप्ने केवलं व्याधिकारणम्
Seeing a crow, a cart, a monkey, a bear, a cow, pus, or bodily filth in a dream is solely a cause of disease.
भग्नभाण्डं क्षतं शूद्रं गलत्कुष्ठं च रोगिणम् । रक्ताम्बरं च जटिलं सूकरं महिषं खरम्
Seeing broken vessels, a wounded Shudra, a leper with falling sores, a person in red garments, a matted-haired ascetic, a pig, a buffalo, or a donkey—
अन्धकारं महाघोरं मृतजीवं भयंकरम् । दृष्ट्वा स्वप्ने योनिलिङ्ग विपत्तिं लभतेध्रुवम्
Seeing darkness, great terror, a dead or living frightening being, or a sexual organ in a dream, one will surely encounter misfortune.
कुवेषरुपं मलेच्छं च यमदूतं भयंकरम् । पाशहस्तं पाशशस्त्रं दृष्ट्वा मृत्युं लभेन्नरः
Seeing a malformed person, a foreigner, a terrifying messenger of Yama, someone holding a noose or a weapon, a man will meet death.
ब्रह्मणो ब्राह्मणी बाला बालको वा सुतः सुता । विलापं कुरुते कोपाद्दृष्ट्वा दुःखमवाप्नुयात्
If a child of a Brahmin, whether boy or girl, laments in anger upon seeing, they will surely encounter suffering.
कृष्णं पुष्पं च तन्माल्यं सस्यं शस्त्रास्त्रधारिणम् । म्लेच्छां च विकृताकारं दृष्ट्वा मृत्युंलभेद्ध्रुवम्
Upon seeing Krishna, a flower, that garland, grain, one bearing weapons, or a foreigner of distorted appearance, one will certainly meet death.
