शक्तोऽहं भस्मसात्कर्तुं यमं सर्वसुरांस्तथा । महेन्द्रप्रभृतीन्सूर्य क्षणेनैवावलीलया
I am able to reduce Yama and all the gods, including Mahendra and you, O Sun, to ashes in a moment.
कस्त्वं धर्मप्रवक्ता मे याहि स्वस्थानमेव च । मम शास्ता तु भगवाञ्छ्रीकृष्णः प्रकृतेः परः
Who are you to declare dharma to me? Go to your own place. My ruler is the blessed Shri Krishna, who is beyond nature.
अद्य मे निर्जने स्थाने रसभङ्गस्त्वया कृतः । मम शापात्पाप दृश्यो राहुग्रस्तो भविष्यसि
Today, in this solitary place, you have interrupted my pleasure; by my curse, you will become visible as sinful, seized by Rahu.
द्रष्टुं त्वां ये घनाः सर्वे दूरीभूता भवन्ति ते । त्वामाच्छन्नं करिष्यन्ति वायुना प्रेरितास्तथा
All the clouds that come to see you will become distant; they will cover you, driven by the wind.
स्वतेजसा भवान्गर्वाद्धततेजा भविष्यसि । मेघाच्छन्नः स्वल्पतेजा राहुग्रस्तो भवान्भव
Because of your own pride in your radiance, you will lose your brilliance; covered by clouds, with little light, you will be seized by Rahu.
ब्राह्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा भगवान्भास्करः स्वयम् । ततः पुटाञ्जलिर्भूत्वा तुष्टाव मुनिपुंगवम्
Hearing the words of the Brahmin, the blessed Sun himself, with folded hands, praised the foremost sage.
भास्कर उवाच अवध्याः सर्वे धर्मज्ञ धन्या मान्याः पुरस्कृताः । नारायणश्च भगवाञ्छंभुर्ब्रह्मा स्वयं प्रभुः
Bhāskara said: All who know righteousness are inviolable, blessed, honored, and esteemed; and Nārāyaṇa, the Blessed Lord, Śaṃbhu, and Brahmā himself, the Lord—
गणेशाश्चापि शेषश्च धर्मश्चापि सनातनः । स्तुवान्ति ब्रह्मणं सर्वे विप्ररूपी जनार्दनः
The Gaṇeśas, Śeṣa, and also the eternal Dharma— all praise Brahmā; and Janārdana appears in the form of a brāhmaṇa.
विप्रदत्तश्च यो ब्रह्मन्वयमस्मन्मुखो द्विजः । हुताशनश्च द्विमुखाः सुराः सर्वे द्विजो वरः
O brāhmaṇa, the one who is given by the brāhmaṇas, we are two-faced, and the gods are all twice-born; the brāhmaṇa is supreme.
क्षमस्व वैष्णवः शुद्धः स्वधर्म स समाचर । वैष्णवानां कृतः कोपो हृदि येषां जनार्दनः
Forgive, O pure Vaiṣṇava, and practice your own duty; for those in whose hearts Janārdana dwells, anger against Vaiṣṇavas is committed.
अस्माभिः पूजिता विप्रा युषमाभिः पूजिताः सुराः । परस्परं स्नेहपात्रं चेदमाचरणं द्विज
We have honored the brāhmaṇas, and you have honored the gods; this mutual affection, O twice-born, is the proper conduct.
अहमेवं त्वया शप्तो मया शप्तो भवान्भव । अन्यथा मां वदन्त्येवं सूर्य निस्तेजसं जनाः
Thus I have been cursed by you, and you have been cursed by me; otherwise, people would say that I, Sūrya, am without brilliance.
पराभूतः क्षत्रियेण भविष्यसि द्विजेश्वर । मरणं क्षत्रियास्त्रेण भवतश्च भविष्यति
You will be defeated by a kṣatriya, O lord of brāhmaṇas, and your death will come by the weapon of a kṣatriya.
सूर्यस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा चुकोप ब्राह्मणः पुनः । तं शशापातिरक्तास्यः शंभुना निर्जितो भवान्
Hearing the words of Sūrya, the brāhmaṇa became angry again; his mouth reddened with rage, he cursed him: 'You will be vanquished by Śaṃbhu.'
उभयोः कलहं ज्ञात्वा कश्यपेन सह व्रज । आजगाम स्वयं ब्रह्मा विधाता जगतामपि
Knowing the quarrel between the two, Brahmā himself, the creator of the worlds, came together with Kaśyapa.
आगत्य ब्रह्मा संत्रस्तं बोधयामास भास्करम् । मुनिश्रेष्ठं च धर्मज्ञं धर्मज्ञानां गुरोर्गुरुः
Having arrived, Brahmā instructed the frightened Bhāskara and the foremost sage who knows righteousness, being himself the guru of those who know righteousness.
ब्रह्मोवाच क्षमस्व भास्कर त्वं च साक्षान्नारायणो भवान् । युष्माकं परिपाल्यश्चाप्यवध्यो ब्राह्मणाः सदा
Brahmā said: Forgive, O Bhāskara, for you are verily Nārāyaṇa; and brāhmaṇas are always to be protected and inviolable by you.
अहं करोमि भवतो विप्रशापान्तमुल्बणम् । अत्राहमागतस्त्रस्तो भृगुणा प्रेरितस्ततः
I will bring an end to the terrible curse of the brāhmaṇa upon you; I have come here, frightened, sent by Bhṛgu.
स्फुटोऽहं प्रेरितश्चापि कश्यपेन मरीचिना । शान्तो भव सुरक्षेष्ठ साक्षीत्वं सर्वकर्मणाम्
I have been clearly sent by Kaśyapa and Marīci; be at peace, O best of gods, and be the witness of all actions.
कुत्रचिद्दिवसे ब्रह्मंस्त्वं तत्र कुत्रचित्क्षणम् । भविष्यसि घनाच्छन्नः सद्यो मुक्तो भविष्यसि
On some day, O Brahman, you will be covered by clouds for a moment in that place, and immediately you will be released.
न्यूनातिरक्ते वर्षे च राहुग्रस्तो भविष्यसि । तत्रादृश्यश्च केषांचित्पुण्यदृश्यो हि कस्यचित्
In a year with excess or deficiency, you will be seized by Rāhu; there, you will be invisible to some, and visible as auspicious to others.
अन्यथा सर्वकालेन पुण्यदृश्यो भवान्भुवि । त्वां दृष्ट्वा च नमस्कृत्य सर्वे निष्पापिनो जनाः
Otherwise, at all times on earth, you will be seen as auspicious; and all sinless people, seeing you, will bow in reverence.
जन्मसप्ताष्टरिः फाङ्कचतुर्थे दशमे तथा । जन्मर्क्षे निधनै नणामदृश्यस्त्वं भविष्यसि
On the seventh, eighth, fifteenth, fourth, and tenth days from birth, and at the birth star, you will be invisible at death.
अस्तकाले घनाच्छन्ने मध्याहनस्थे जलेऽपि वा । अर्धोदिते च काने च पापदृश्यो भविष्यसि
At dusk, when covered by clouds, at midday, or even in water, when half-risen or in a forest, you will be seen as inauspicious.
भार्यादुःखनिमित्तेन भार्यया हेतुभूतया । श्वशुरेण शालकेन हततेजा भविष्यसि
Because of suffering caused by your wife, and with your wife as the reason, your brilliance will be destroyed by your father-in-law, Shālaka.
अन्यथा तव तेजश्च संज्ञा सहितुमक्षमा । मालीसुमालियुद्धे च शंभुना त्वं पराचितः
Otherwise, your radiance and awareness would be unbearable; in the battle between Māli and Sumāli, you were defeated by Śambhu.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा सूर्य च बोधयामास ब्राह्मणम् । नम्रं शापपराभूतं लज्जितं कोपितं व्रज
Having spoken thus, Sūrya instructed the brāhmaṇa, who was bowed down, overcome by a curse, ashamed, and angered, to return.
हे विप्र श्वगृहं गच्छ गच्छ वत्स यथासुखम् । त्वत्तेजसा क्षणेनैव भस्मीभूतं भवेज्जगत्
O brāhmaṇa, go to your home, go, child, as you wish; by your radiance alone, the world could be reduced to ashes in a moment.
सूर्यस्त्वत्परिपाल्यश्च भवान्सूर्यस्य नित्यशः । परस्परं च पूज्यश्च संबन्धः पोष्यपोष्कः
You are always to be protected by Sūrya, and you, in turn, are always Sūrya's; both are to be honored by each other, the relationship being one of mutual support.
हर्यशेन क्षत्रियेण कार्तवीर्यार्जुनेन च । भविष्यसि न संदेहः पराभूतो द्विजो मृतः
By Haryaśva, a kṣatriya, and by Kārtavīryārjuna, you will be defeated, O twice-born, and there is no doubt you will die.
