पूजाधारश्च कथितः श्रूयतां पूजनक्रमः
The basis of worship has been described; now listen to the order of worship.
कश्चिद्ददाति हरये चोपचारांश्च षोडश
Some offer sixteen items of service to Hari,
कश्चिद्द्वादश वस्तूनि पञ्च वस्तूनि कश्चन
Some offer twelve substances, and some offer five.
आसनं वसनं पाद्यमर्घ्यमाचमनीयकम् 1.26.
A seat, garment, water for washing the feet, arghya, and water for sipping—
गन्धं माल्यं च शय्यां च ललितां सुविलक्षणाम्
Fragrant substances, garlands, and a delightful, distinguished bed—
गन्धान्नतल्पताम्बूलं विना द्रव्याणि द्वादश
Except for fragrance, food, bedding, and betel, the other twelve items are required.
सर्वाण्येतानि मूलेन दद्यात्साधकसत्तमः
The excellent practitioner should offer all these with their root.
आदौ कृत्वा भूतशुद्धिं प्राणायामं ततः परम्
First, perform purification of the elements, then proceed with breath control.
वर्णन्यासं विनिर्वर्त्य चार्घ्यपात्रं विनिर्दिशेत्
After completing the placement of syllables, designate the vessel for offering.
जलेनापूर्य्य शङ्खं च तत्र संस्थापयेद्द्विजः
Fill the conch with water and place it there, O twice-born.
पूजोपकरणं तेन जलेन क्षालयेत्पुनः
With that water, cleanse again the items for worship.
ध्यानेन गुरुदत्तेन ध्यायेत्कृष्णमनन्यधीः
With meditation given by the guru, meditate on Krishna with unwavering mind.
अङ्ग प्रत्यङ्गदेवं च तन्त्रोक्तं पूजयेद्धरिम्
Worship Hari as prescribed in the tantra, including each limb and sub-limb deity.
दत्त्वोपहारं विविधं स्तुत्वा च कवचं पठेत् 1.26.
After offering various gifts and praising, recite the protective hymn.
कृत्वा वै देवपूजां च यज्ञं कुर्य्याद्विचक्षणः
Having performed the worship of the deity, the wise should conduct the sacrifice.
नित्यश्राद्धं यथाशक्ति दानं वित्तानुरूपकम्
Daily ancestral rites and giving, according to one's means and wealth.
इति ते कथितं सर्वं वेदोक्तं सूत्रमुत्तमम्
Thus, everything has been told to you—the supreme thread as stated in the Vedas.
नारद उवाच यतीनां वैष्णवानां च विधवाब्रह्मचारिणाम्
Narada said: For ascetics, Vaishnavas, widows, and celibates—
किं कर्त्तव्यमकर्त्तव्यमभोग्यं भोग्यमेव वा
What should be done, what should not be done, what is to be enjoyed, and what is not?
महेश्वर उवाच कश्चित्समीरणाहारी फलाहारी च कश्चन
Maheshvara said: Some subsist on air, and some on fruits.
अन्नाहारी यथा काले गृही च गृहिणीयुतः
Some eat food at the proper time, and some are householders with their wives.
हविष्यान्नं ब्राह्मणानां प्रशस्तं गृहिणां सदा
Cooked sacrificial food is always commendable for Brahmins and their wives.
अन्नं विष्ठा जलं मूत्रं यद्विष्णोरनिवेदितम्
Food, excrement, water, and urine not offered to Vishnu are like filth.
ब्राह्मणः कामतोऽन्नं च यो भुङ्क्ते हरिवासरे
A Brahmin who eats food out of desire on Hari's day—
न भोक्तव्यं न भोक्तव्यं न भोक्तव्यं च नारद
It must not be eaten, it must not be eaten, it must not be eaten, O Nārada.
गृही शैवश्च शाक्तश्च ब्राह्मणो ज्ञानदुर्बलः
A householder, a devotee of Śiva, a devotee of Śakti, or a brāhmaṇa lacking in knowledge—
कृमिभिः शालिमानैश्च भक्षितस्तत्र तिष्ठति 1.27.
—that food, eaten by worms or infested with insects, remains there.
जन्माष्टमीदिने रामनवमीदिवसे हरेः
On the eighth day of the lunar month, on Rāma’s birthday, or on the day of Hari’s birth—
उपवासासमर्थश्च फलं मूलं जलं पिबेत्
—one who is unable to fast may consume fruits, roots, or drink water.
सकृद्भुङ्क्ते हविष्यान्नं विष्णोर्नैवेद्यमेव च
If one eats sacrificial food or only the offerings made to Viṣṇu, even once—
