Then he becomes pure at once, spotless upon the earth; the lion killed Prasena, and the lion was slain by Jāmbavat.
"O gentle one, do not weep; indeed, this is your Syamantaka gem." Thus, with this mantra, water is purified, and the virtuous one should certainly drink it.
Thus ends the seventy-eighth chapter, called 'The Dialogue of Nārada and the Blessed Nanda,' in the section on the Birth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, in the great Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa.
Now, the seventy-ninth chapter. Nanda said: O Lord of the world, how is it that the sun or the moon is seized by Rāhu? Why is the moon not favored in Bhādra, on the fourth day, whether waxing or waning?
You are the origin of the Vedas; whom else shall I ask but you? That which is secret in the Vedas and Purāṇas, which even the wise do not know—
The Blessed Lord said: This statement is untrue and is forbidden even by the Vedic authorities. Forgive me, Nanda; may good be yours. Ask me another question.
O dear one, a trustworthy statement should not be revealed by the wise; for, when revealed, obstacles arise for the virtuous, and the gods find a flaw.
Nanda said: Tell me, Lord of the universe; do not deceive your devotee. The two gods, though invisible, are seized by Rāhu at Puṣya.
The Blessed Lord said: Listen, Nanda, I will tell you this ancient tale; by hearing it, a man becomes spotless, as if he had bathed at a sacred ford.
Whatever sin a man incurs by seeing all the sinful, by merely hearing this story, it will be reduced to ashes.
Once, Jamadagni, filled with great curiosity and accompanied by Reṇukā, pleased, went to the bank of the Narmadā.
In a secluded spot on the bank of the Narmadā, he sported there with her, his newly-wedded, beautiful wife, endowed with fresh youth.
Adorned in fine garments, with a lovely smile, adorned with jeweled ornaments, her gait slowed by the weight of her breasts and hips.
Unmatched among beautiful women, with the complexion of white campaka flowers, her face full as the moon, and graced with sidelong glances.
Clad in exceedingly fine garments, stricken by the arrows of love, her whole body thrilled with delight, and even fainting from enjoyment.
In that charming place, filled with the song of male cuckoos, with sweet sounds and delightful fragrance, adorned with a bed of flowers.
The sage, his whole body anointed with sandalwood, wearing garments and garlands, filled with the joy of the great rasa, was addressed by Bhāskara himself.
"You are the great-grandson of the creator of the Vedas, and of Brahmā, the Lord of the universe; always pure, thoroughly learned in the four Vedas."
He is the creator of the Vedic limbs, knowledgeable in dharma, the foremost among those versed in the Vedas, a great ascetic, radiant, a celibate, and steadfast in his vows.
Having studied the scripture spoken by you and others, he is learned; dharma is established by the Vedas, and its opposite is adharma.
How can one who knows dharma abandon it, being engaged in adharma? The Veda especially declares the fault of sexual union during the day.
I am a witness among the righteous; thus I speak this to you. Hearing the words of the Sun, the twice-born abandoned sexual union.
Seeing before him the radiant Sun in the form of a Brahmin, the Sun, his mouth red, filled with anger and shame, spoke.
Jamadagni said: Who are you, who consider yourself learned? There is no one more learned than you. I am a disciple of the venerable Bhrigu, and you of Kashyapa.
I know the four Vedas and discern dharma and adharma; dharma is established by the Vedas, and its opposite is adharma.
A man who is ignorant is always dulled by his own actions; for the powerful, there is no fault, just as for the snake that devours all.
You and others, as well as dharma, are witnesses of all actions; the giver of results and knower of scripture, since you are always a son.
You are not the rulers of the Vaishnavas, but only of us; for those devoted to Vasudeva, there is never any misfortune.
The Sudarshana discus of Hari always protects the Vaishnavas; Narayana himself, Brahma, and Shankara.
Yama is not our ruler, nor are you, O Sun; like a prince in his own place, we go as we please.
