Here, knowledge becomes embodied in the world of the dead; even without observance, by the mantra, one is liberated while living—no doubt.
Go to the pure Vraja, O Lord of Vraja, go to Vraja; I will tell you, dear one, listen, of the sin destroyed by its sight.
An evil dream, sinful food, and anything that causes obstacles; the killing of a cow, the killing of a Brahmin, ingratitude, and deceit.
The killing of a deity, the killing of one's father or mother, sin, the slaying of a universal benefactor; bearing false witness and deceiving a guest.
One who sacrifices for the village alone, who steals from gods or Brahmins; the wicked killer of a fig tree, and one who reviles Shiva or Vishnu.
A twice-born who is undedicated, without proper conduct, who neglects the twilight rites; a temple servant, a bull-handler, and one who cooks for Shudras.
One who cremates corpses for Shudras, who eats food from Shudra funeral rites; a woman without virtue, with a severed nose, and one who reviles gods or Brahmins.
One devoid of devotion to the feet, lacking devotion to Vishnu; a Shudra widow, a Chandala woman, and one who is adulterous.
One who is perpetually angry, wicked, afflicted by debt, born of adultery; a thief, a liar, and one who abandons those who seek refuge.
One who takes meat, a Brahmin who marries a low-caste woman; a Brahmin who goes to a Shudra woman, or a twice-born who acts as a butcher.
One who approaches forbidden women, wicked, the lowest among men of all four castes; one's mother, stepmother, mother-in-law, sister, and daughter.
The wife of the teacher, the wife of the son, the beloved of one's brother; maternal aunt, paternal aunt, and the beloved of one's cousin.
Maternal uncle's wife, newly married woman, paternal uncle's wife during menstruation; and one born of one's father or mother—these eighteen are considered forbidden.
These are mentioned in the Sama Veda and must be avoided by the virtuous; seeing or touching them causes a man to incur the sin of killing a Brahmin.
Therefore, upon seeing them by fate, one should remember Hari after seeing the sun; if seen intentionally, they become blameworthy.
Thus, the wise do not look upon them, fearing a curse, O Lord of Vraja; the learned do not look at the sun when it is eclipsed by Rahu.
On the eighth, seventh, or tenth day of birth, when the sun is in the birth constellation, at death, or on the fourth day during the lunar phase.
On all these occasions, they do not look at the trembling moon or sun; the moon is not to be seen, whether bright or dark, in the month of Bhadra.
On the fourth day, when the moon rises, the wise abandon it; the moon's eclipse and its blemish are considered extremely inauspicious.
To such a one, O Nanda, if seen intentionally, desire is given; if seen unintentionally, one should drink water purified by mantra.
Then he becomes pure at once, spotless upon the earth; the lion killed Prasena, and the lion was slain by Jāmbavat.
"O gentle one, do not weep; indeed, this is your Syamantaka gem." Thus, with this mantra, water is purified, and the virtuous one should certainly drink it.
Thus ends the seventy-eighth chapter, called 'The Dialogue of Nārada and the Blessed Nanda,' in the section on the Birth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, in the great Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa.
Now, the seventy-ninth chapter. Nanda said: O Lord of the world, how is it that the sun or the moon is seized by Rāhu? Why is the moon not favored in Bhādra, on the fourth day, whether waxing or waning?
You are the origin of the Vedas; whom else shall I ask but you? That which is secret in the Vedas and Purāṇas, which even the wise do not know—
The Blessed Lord said: This statement is untrue and is forbidden even by the Vedic authorities. Forgive me, Nanda; may good be yours. Ask me another question.
O dear one, a trustworthy statement should not be revealed by the wise; for, when revealed, obstacles arise for the virtuous, and the gods find a flaw.
Nanda said: Tell me, Lord of the universe; do not deceive your devotee. The two gods, though invisible, are seized by Rāhu at Puṣya.
The Blessed Lord said: Listen, Nanda, I will tell you this ancient tale; by hearing it, a man becomes spotless, as if he had bathed at a sacred ford.
Whatever sin a man incurs by seeing all the sinful, by merely hearing this story, it will be reduced to ashes.
